Description
The J. Henri Morin & Son Funeral Home was founded by J. Henri Morin in 1900 after immigrating to Spencer from Canada in the late 1800's. He began the business along with his wife Ida who assisted him in the numerous endeavors that were necessary in providing funerals mostly in families homes. As the need to provide funerals in a place that was larger and more convenient for people to congregate, the family residence at 23 Maple Terrace was renovated into a funeral home in the 1930's. His son, Alfred, who worked with his father in the 1930's operated the funeral home until retirement in 1973. "Fred" as he was known, was very active in Spencer and the area. He donated the first ambulance to the newly formed Spencer Rescue Squad back in 1959. He was a charter member of the Spencer Exchange Club, Spencer Fish & Game, D.P.H.S. Scholarship Fund and served as Vice President of the Spencer Savings Bank. During this time several renovations were made in the old family three decker to accommodate the increase in use of the building. In 1973, the family business was turned over to Alfred Jr. "Al" is involved with many local organizations including the Spencer Exchange Club (Past President) D.P.H.S. Scholarship Fund (Vice Chairman), Leicester Business Assoc., Greater Worcester Funeral Directors Assoc., Board of Directors of the Spencer Rescue Squad, The Massachusetts Funeral Directors Assoc., and Trustee of Spencer Savings Bank. Married to the former Lou Ann M. Ledoux they have two children, Jarrett A. and Melissa M. Morin-Bernard, and three grandchildren, Bryce, Renee and Sydney. In 1988 the purchase of the Morrison Funeral Home in the adjoining Town of Leicester was added to the family business. Robert & his wife Anna Morrison purchased an old Victorian in the early 1950's and set into operation the first funeral home in town. After several renovations and additions , the building is now modern operation with handicapped entrance, restrooms and central air. Both facilities have off street parking for over 60 cars. In 1998, Jarrett Morin C.P.C., a licensed Funeral Director and great grandson of J. Henri entered the funeral business and is now an integral part of its future. He is the fourth generation of funeral director to serve families with the highest level of personal service and professionalism that has been a hallmark of our service to area families. The summer of 1999 saw the ground breaking of a new 5600 sq. ft. facility in Spencer in the same location of the original building, inaugurating a fresh start for the Morin family in the New Millennium! Our company provides a variety of funeral options, each designed to provide comfort to every family. Now in our hundredth plus year, we will continue to strive to offer everyone, regardless of financial status, a truly meaningful funeral for their loved one.
