Description
The DeVito Family entered the funeral business on May 1, 1928 at its original East Cambridge, MA location. The founder, Alexander DeVito, immigrated from Tufo, Avellino, Italy in 1912. He soon found himself enlisting in the US Army and was assigned to the Army Medical Corp during WWI. In 1918, Alexander worked at the Fort Devens General Hospital assisting during the ‘Influenza outbreak’. His experience assisting local area ‘undertakers’ led to his full-fledged occupation, and his new business enterprise: The DeVito Funeral Service. In 1930, the DeVito Funeral Service became one of the first to establish a funeral home facility in the Greater Boston area. Mr. DeVito purchased the Hurley Estate at 392 Cambridge Street, East Cambridge, MA. After their service in WWII, sons Edward and Alfred DeVito joined their father’s establishment. Soon thereafter, the DeVito family expanded their operations to Watertown, MA., at 761 Mt. Auburn Street, the second funeral home was started. In 1960, a large addition transformed the building into one of the largest funeral homes in Greater Boston. A recent addition to the home has created a much needed handicap-accessible entrance. The addition of a third generation of funeral professionals, Alfred M. DeVito, Jr. and John F. DeVito resulted in the expansion of the firm to Arlington, MA. In 1983, the Fessenden Home site at 1145 Mass. Ave. was purchased and renovated. Arlington and contiguous towns quickly learned that the DeVito family had much to offer. The funeral home has been fully refurbished and additional space was added in 2001 to accommodate the families served by the DeVito Funeral Home. In 2011 both the Arlington and Watertown buildings were refurbished with new carpet and furniture to maintain our comfortable and modern appearance. Both John and Jonathan, the fourth generation of DeVito’s to enter the business were licensed as funeral directors in 2011. The DeVito Funeral Homes are proud to say that they are still a family owned and operated business. On July 1, 2009 the DeVito Family was entrusted with the funeral business of the Saville and Grannan Funeral Home and Cremation Service. The heritage of the Saville, Grannan and Walkinshaw families continues at DeVito Funeral Home of Arlington.

My family has used DeVito funeral home for over 50 years. They are always so responsive and respectful. They take care of every aspect to help in such a difficult time. I have dealt with the different members of their organization and just recently with John. John listened to our wishes in dealing with our dad’s funeral and handled everything with respect. They even reached out to me to see how I was doing after my dad was buried. They provided awesome service and had so much compassion that I would recommend them highly.

Words cannot express the kindnesses, guidance, comfort and support the DeVito team has provided to me and my whole family during the hardest moments of our lives. In 2017, my grandfather passed and in 2019, my grandmother followed. We were broken, overwhelmed, unfamiliar with the process, and hosting hundreds for each funeral. The DeVito team literally held our hands through the process, made sure everything and everyone was in place and made us feel like family. In April of this year, when my oldest brother passed, there were no thoughts about which funeral home would be used. In my weakest moment, I called and DeVito’s answered. Jonathan, thank you for your patience, your flexibility, your understanding, your kindness. Thank you to the entire DeVito’s team!

My father passed away in 2019 and I wanted to have a wake for him but didn't have a funeral home to do it. My husband suggested I have DeVito"s take care of this because he knew of their reputation for outstanding care to make sure everything went seamlessly at this very difficult time. He was right. Everyone who works there is so caring and kind. Jonathan is excellent as is the rest of the family involved in the process. Another sad event happened in 2021 as my brother passed away. Of course I had the wake at DeVito"s because of how they took care of my father. I also have to thank Elizabeth (I don't know if she is part of the family of she just works there) but she always keeps in touch to see how you are doing and let's you know she is there for you in your time of grief.

I can't express how happy I was for using DeVito Funeral home to assist me in my dad funeral affairs. His passing was unexpected and unplanned but DeVito was a big support every step of the way. When I first made calls to I had narrowed it down to DeVito's Watertown location and another local funeral home that my neighbors had used over the years. After my first phone call with Jonathan I felt immediately at ease and supported, I knew they were going to make me feel comfortable in arranging something that honored my father. No other funeral home I talked to made me feel that way. Any question I had I could easily email them and I would get an answer promptly. Jonathon was a huge support They were open about costs and no surprise billing I had been warned about at other funeral homes, and it was easy to stay in budget while simultaneously giving my father the send off he deserved. Can't speak more highly of them, and they will be my first recommendation to anyone in the area. If I ever need their services again, they will be my first call.

Both of my parents last arrangements were through DeVito. I can’t say enough about how smooth and calming the whole process was. Family owned, they all are informative, compassionate and thorough. Highly recommend.
