Description

Paul Funeral Home

Paul Funeral Home began its service to the people of Beaufort and surrounding counties in 1926 operating under the name "City Furniture and Funeral Co.". The original partners were Fenner T. Paul, Guy B. Taylor and Mack Swanner. The company operated from a location on Market Street across from the old Beaufort County Courthouse and later moved further south on Market Street. In 1933 the two businesses were separated with Fenner T. Paul assuming the funeral business. The family later purchased the Isiah Bishop Co. in Belhaven in 1941 and still operates the Belhaven location. He was joined in January 1934 by his nephew, Joseph Bonner Paul, Sr. who was the prime partner in the business in the succeeding years. Mr. Bonner remained active in the business as a consultant and continued to come in on a daily basis until his death in 2007. The firm moved into the present location at 900 John Small Ave. in Washington in 1954. Paul Lewis Dunn, nephew of Joseph Bonner Paul, Sr. joined the firm in 1962 as an apprentice. He received his Funeral Service License and worked with the firm until his death in August 2005. Seeing the great need for progressive leadership for the future and to insure a continuity of service, Dunn secured the services of Robert Kirkland Anderson, Robert Benjamin Hodges and Fenner Mac Hodges who all served as Vice Presidents of the company in various areas of responsibility. Robert Anderson continued his employment with Paul Funeral Home until his death in 1996. F. Mac Hodges left the funeral home to pursue other interests. Robert B. "Bobby" Hodges continues to work at Paul Funeral Home and has assumed the position of President. The firm continues its original mission of providing Quality Service and Integrity by offering a complete range of traditional, contemporary, cremation, pre-planned funeral services and marker/monument/mausoleum sales from its two locations.
