The Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, located at 619 East High Street, in Mount Vernon, was built in the 1860s on nice wide East High Street in Mount Vernon with a trolley car line running by the front door. One of the owners of this grand old home was Hewett Gehres who was the president of Cooper Bessemer Company in Mount Vernon. In 1948 a funeral director and his with, Lawrence "Deke" and Martine Mills purchased the residence from Mr. Gehres and started the Mills Funeral Home. Mr. Mills died in 1958 and in 1959 a young funeral director and his wife from Warren, Ohio, Frank and Anita Flowers, purchased the funeral home from Martine Mills. The funeral business grew under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Flowers and two different additions were added to the original building, one in 1969 and one in 1974, expanding it to the present size. In September of 1981, Mr. and Mrs. Flowers decided to retire and sold the funeral home to the Snyder family. At that time Dennis Snyder and his family moved to Mount Vernon to manage that location. Over the years additional properties around the funeral home were purchased and additional parking was added to accommodate over 50 vehicles. Through the years this location has maintained the charm and feel of a grand old home and serves as host to many families at their time of loss. The Snyder family has been honored to serve the families of North-Central Ohio for nearly a century. Founded in 1922, four generations of Snyders have gone above and beyond to provide comfort while creating meaningful tributes to honor and celebrate each unique life lived. Of course, much has changed over the past 100 years—and the funeral industry continues to evolve. With the passing of each season, we strive to stay on the cutting-edge of our industry and offer the latest technology, while continuing to provide superior services at reasonable prices.
