Zell Miller Obituary

Zell Miller, former Georgia governor and U.S. senator, has died. He was 86.

"We'll probably not see his likes again," said Merle Black, the Asa G. Candler professor of politics and government at Emory University and co-author of the seminal volume, "Politics and Society in the South." Black called Miller's eight years as governor the "high point" of his career, but added, "the most interesting part of his career was at the end."

Miller's life of political service included two terms as Georgia governor, 16 years as lieutenant governor and 5 years in the U.S. Senate. He was appointed after the death of Georgian Paul Coverdell in 2000 and did not run for re-election. His term ended in 2005.

Services are planned for Zell Miller in his native Young Harris, Ga., and in Atlanta.

On Monday, March 26, a public memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. at Young Harris College. The event will be held in Glenn-McGinnis Hall in the Clegg Fine Arts Building of the college where Miller was a professor when he ran for and won a state Senate seat to launch his political career. The Clegg building is at 1 College Street, Young Harris.

On Tuesday, a celebration of life service will take place at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, 3180 Peachtree Road NE in Atlanta. At the conclusion of the 11 a.m. service, the family will travel to the Georgia State Capitol, where Miller will lie in state in the rotunda.

The executive state funeral for Miller will take place in the Capitol rotunda at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

All of these events are open to the public. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Miller Institute Foundation in memory of Zell Bryan Miller.

On behalf of the SCAD community, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Zell Miller. As governor, Mr. Miller championed education, and I will always treasure the memory of January 26, 1995, when the governor so graciously declared SCAD Day in Georgia. The SCAD family remembers Mr. Miller with the utmost esteem and gratitude.

My sincere condolences.
I was one of the volunteers who worked on their 1996 Christmas cards in the Governor's Mansion. They stopped by the room to thank us. Later I received a handwritten thank you note from Shirley and a framed print of "Peach County Peaches," the official painting of 1996 Georgia Arts Day, by Helen Faircloth. I have it hanging in my home.
Thanks to Zell for his service in the Marines. My Father was in the Marines. Thanks to Zell and Shirley for their service to Georgia.

his grandson Justin went to the KinderCare in Doraville, Ga. where my mother Ann Moxley was director. She told some cute stories about Justin (Midder) as he called himself. When Zell Miller came to pick up his grandson one time and she required ID from him, Mr. Miller said ("Don't you know who I am") and she stated she did not care... show me ID or he cannot go with you. Also he had a hand in fund raising when my mother developed cancer and she needed assistance with her medical expenses.

A longtime friend of both our families--the unforgettable "Tinker" Griffis--is no longer able to send condolences in this forum, so it's my privilege to do so in his place now. Both of us admired Gov. Miller's clarity, courage and vision, even when we occasionally did not agree on the "particulars", and we stood in awe of him as the finest stump speaker of his generation--words like "spellbinding" and "bravura" come quickly to mind. Today, I rest assured that Zell is already enjoying reunions with many loved ones--including "Tink", of course! Mrs. Miller, Matt, Murphy and your families: I'll be holding you close in thought and prayer.

As a young Georgian growing up in Savannah I looked up to you. As an African American male, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your HOPE Scholarship is what helped me obtain my College degree. I recalled first meeting you abrubtly when you came to Savannah to give a speech. It was my birthday and when I heard you were coming I immediately purchased your book and read it in the lobby hoping for a chance to meet you. I was in luck, after your speech you were walking the room and I tapped you on your shoulder and thanked you for giving me a chance to succeed. I will never forget you pulled up a chair to talk with me one on one.

I had the honor to meet you again when you were a US Senator. I interned for Max Cleland and our staff met up with yours. Your words of wisdom are for the ages and have been inspiring.

Rest well Zell,

Sincerley yours,

I remain, your friend,

Zell Miller was an amazing statesman. One of the few who people felt they knew his heart. He switched parties and no one carried we voted for him anyway. Party was inconsequential. Sincere condolences to Mrs. Miller on the passing of her husband. And, we will forever be grateful for the impact Gov. Miller had on our state. What he did for Technical Education and Gov. and Mrs. Miller did for Adult Education has been the key to keeping Georgia with a trained workforce - which has been the catalyst for attracting new jobs! It may not have always been easy, but it was always a pleasure to work for this former Marine - one who believe in doing the job you were paid to do! And, thanks Governor for saying YES to expanding Postsecondary Technical Education in GA!

Although I was only recently acquainted with Zell Miller, my family has a history with the Miller family dating back many years. My mom, Juanita Berry Spence was born in 1926 in Young Harris in a farmhouse directly across the street from the Millers. She, Margaret Dendy and Jane Miller Ross (Zell's sister) were childhood friends. Zell was six years younger and I have an original photo of the neighborhood children, including my mom, in attendance at Zell's 6th birthday party. My few personal experiences with Zell, his wife, Shirley, and sister, Jane, will always remain in my memory as pleasant ones. He and Shirley were always gracious and pleasant and down to earth. Margaret Dendy and Jane became my girlfriends in recent years (my mom died in 1998) and have given me lovely perspectives on their growing up years in Young Harris. I regret that I did not get to know Zell and his family better in recent years. They are admirable, hard working and gracious and I know that Zell and his sister, Jane, who passed away a couple of years ago will always be missed by their friends and our beautiful mountain community.

Zell Miller was one of the most colorful (yet principled) politicians Georgia ever had. I still remember him looking me in the eye and letting me know that he was proud to sign legislation that funded much-needed computer modernization for state government. While I did not always agree with him on everything, I respected his views and admired his natural ability to relate to the common folk. I want to send my condolences and prayers to the Zell B. Miller Family. The little unknown works of
him bringing back baseball to Young Harris College has been a great impact on my life. From first meeting him on the baseball field in our inaugural season in 1993, to the BBQ at the Governors' Mansion while getting the privilege of going upstairs with him and Coach Appleton to his private office so he could show us his collection of baseballs and country music records. While there, we listened to him tell the story of President Carter and him catching (landing in a lap) a foul ball from Dieon Sanders in the playoffs. As a former assistant coach of YHC baseball, I had the honor of having dinner with him and Hall-of-Famer Hank Aaron. My favorite book of all time is Core Values and I believe every graduating senior should have to read this book for graduation. Finally, one of my highest honors of all time is receiving the Zell B. Miller Baseball Coaches Award as a player in 1995 at YHC. Because of your generosity, leadership and influence to the Young Harris Baseball team, it helped lead me to give back by becoming a teacher and coach.

I truly admired Zell Miller. He was a man of honesty and integrity and that was apparent in the way he led his life. Ever so often I go to you tube to watch his speech at the GOP convention. It was one of the best speeches I have ever heard. He had a passion about his beliefs and wasn't afraid to share them. We need more like him. I had the honor of knowing him and his wife Shirley, who in her own right is an incredible person. In my conversations with her she would sometimes tell me stories about him or her that fascinated and intrigued me. It was clear that they had a deep rooted love for each other and their family.
