Walter Spanier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 10 to May 14, 2007.
SPANIER _ Walter Gerald 1943 - 2007 It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Walter on Tuesday, May 8, 2007. Walter was born at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary on March 3, 1943, and was raised in Calgary. During and after high school, Walter worked for many years at the family business, established by his father, Nicolas Albert; however, flying proved to be his true passion. He realized his dream of not only attaining his helicopter endorsement on a Bell Jet Ranger 206 in April of 1981, but also of flying his own 206, C-GWGS; the registration reflecting his own initials. Walter had both a strong love and fierce loyalty for his family and friends. A smart, intelligent man with a will power that astonished everyone including his doctors. He was quick witted and focused, but also known to be mischievous and enjoyed a good joke. Almost everyone saw the twinkle in Walter's eyes at some point or another. In 1968, Walter built his own house on the "Ranch" near Cochrane, where he lived for the rest of his life. Walter was a man of many interests: he loved to watch and feed treats to his "boys" (horses) and dog Penny. He spent many a day looking at the sky for signs of rain, when showing his original 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. Camping, sausage making, woodwork, gardening and remote airplane flying were just a few of Walter's favourite pastimes. Walter leaves behind his loving family, his wife; Brenda, son Rick (Brig), twin daughters; Suzanne (Scott) and Karen, stepson; Jason (Alana), brother; Ralph (Liz), and two beautiful granddaughters; Sarah and Rachel, niece Lorie (Brian) and nephew Gord. He also leaves to mourn his Auntie Viola, Uncle Jim, Aunt Doreen and numerous cousins, mother-in-law; Frances, brother-in-law; Roger (Elaine), sisters-in-law; Ellen (Dieter), Gayle (Kelly), and nieces; Karissa, Lauren and Hayley. Many friends will also miss him dearly. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Cochrane Funeral Home (369 Railway Street, Cochrane, Alberta), today, May 14, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Celebration of Walter's Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway's Cochrane Funeral Home (369 Railway Street) tomorrow, May 15, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the Main Floor Intensive Care Unit at the Foothills Medical Centre (1403 - 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 2T9). Many thanks to all the nursing staff and the doctors at the Foothills Medical Centre who did so much, not only for Walter, but also for his family. In living memory of Walter Gerald Spanier, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Cochrane Funeral Home, 369 RAILWAY STREET, COCHRANE. Telephone: 403-932-4740.

I know you are still with us Dad, I feel it in some way every day. Thoughts of times gone by still make me laugh and cry, but I think it is your way of letting us know that you are always near. Love you, miss you, thank you, Dad.

Dear Brenda and Family,

Please accept our deepest heart felt condolences on the sudden passing of Walter. It saddens me to have to write this, as it was not yet his time.

Walt always had time for lengthy conversation, and remembered everything we ever talked about. His presence will be sadly missed.

Ralph and Family,
I am saddened to hear of Walters passing, he called me out of the blue about 1 year ago, when he was doing some new fencing and said he thought of me when we built this first fence. I was hoping to get in touch with him after my recovery from a knee replacement.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and Walter's wife and family at this sad time.

The last time I saw Walter I enjoyed an amazing Christmas dinner at the home of his daughter Suzanne. Walter and I sat next to each other at one of the tables, that would be the one that was in her front entrance, and it was the first time I really had the opportunity to have some one on one conversations with him. It was a Christmas when Suzanne made us all reach into a grab bag and pull out something crazy, such as wacky glasses, mustaches or big noses to wear on our faces. I think Walter and I tried them all on and we enjoyed some good laughs together as we thought we were the most entertaining two adults in the whole crowd. I really enjoyed that evening and in particular, feeling like I got to know Walter. I am sorry for your loss and will be thinking of you all.

My dear Brenda, Rick, Suzanne and Karen,

I am so saddened at this time and sorry that I am not in Calgary right now.

As you know, our thoughts and prayers were for Walter's recovery when we left Calgary on May 2nd. He was not only on my mind every mile of the trip down here to Nashville but every waking moment of the day. When I awoke yesterday and again today, I thought I had just woke up from a bad dream.

Now are thoughts are of with you folks and we both want you to know that although we are not there with you ... our thoughts and prayers certainly are.

In closing I want to say that I'm going to so miss my brother as are you but, as Brenda said yesterday on the phone, he is at peace. Let's all use that thought as consolation at this terribly sad, sad time.

With much love,

Ralph and Liz
