CHARLES DAVIS Obituary

January 27, 1944 -
July 14, 2017

Charles Maurice "Chuck" Davis died unexpectedly on July 14, 2017 at his home on Samish Island, Washington at the age of 73.

He will be dearly missed by his wife Catherine, children Peter and Allison, brother Norman, sisters Margery, Marilyn and Marlene, grandchildren Will, Ruby and Charlotte, cousins, nieces, nephews and the many friends, neighbors and colleagues whom his generosity has touched.

Born January 27, 1944 to Maurice and Marguerite Davis, Chuck graduated in the Sedro-Woolley High School class of 1962. He was an ardent Sea Explorer Scout and played football with his brother Norm as well as band, baseball, drama, and was senior class president.

Chuck was appointed to attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, class of 1966, then went to sea as a deck officer in South Vietnam and beyond. He loved to regale his family with swashbuckling tales of calling on exotic ports while sailing the seven seas.

Indeed, Chuck's greatest passion was to be on and around the sea and in sharing that with others. At King's Point he competed in crew and later, sailing.

Chuck followed his passion to become a maritime lawyer, graduating from the University of Washington School of Law in 1973 to start his practice in Seattle, where he raised his children.

In 2001 Chuck returned to the Sedro-Woolley area to build his home on Samish Island where he had played in the bay as a child. There, he enjoyed boating, sailing, canoeing, crabbing, fishing and clamming while continuing his law practice, publishing the 9th edition of his treatise, the Maritime Law Deskbook, serving on the Washington Board of Pilotage Commissioners, and perfecting his smoked salmon recipe.

As Uncle Chuck, he took such delight in his grand-nieces and nephews' smiles hitting waves in the speedboat on Samish Bay. As Grampy, he loved trudging through low tide looking for crabs and seaweed with Will and Ruby. As Dad, he'd pull on his hip-waders at 4 A.M. to catch King Salmon in the Samish River estuary.

Chuck met Catherine in Seattle. They married in 1980 and ran the Honolulu Marathon on their honeymoon. They were always there for each other and always loved their children. They were soul mates.

Chuck's sharing spirit extended to the entire community. In Seattle, he coached his kids in Queen Anne Little League Baseball and Soccer, skied, and sold Christmas trees with Boy Scout Troop 70. Having played Baritone Horn in the U.S. Merchant Marine Regimental Band, he encouraged his kids in all things music, and played in the Samish Island Marching Band on July 4th for over two decades. He served as chairman of the Samish Island Community Center, cooked the salmon he caught for the community potluck, and was always willing to lend his wisdom, a hand, a power tool, or his boat to drop crab pots for any neighbor.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and a notice will follow.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

I was devastated by the news of Chuck's death. Chuck and I were on the Washington State Board of Pilotage Commissioners for a number of years. His steady ability to analyze complex issues made him an ideal Commissioner. At the same time he had a wry sense of humor that allowed him to provide input to the Board without seeming officious. He served the people of the State of Washington in an exemplary manner.

Chuck and I also interfaced as a result of maritime consulting work that both of us did. Usually I was the one going to him for his insight into a complicated legal question caused by the vagaries of maritime law. He was always willing to share his knowledge.

He will be greatly missed and I extend to his family my heartfelt sympathy for your tremendous loss.

Catherine and Family,

It is with great sadness that we heard of your loss. The Howard Family will cherish the memories of Chuck and his steadfast dedication to the scouts in Troop 72. Chuck was always there to provide help and guidance.

We fondly remember our kids playing together and the welcoming and comfortable environment of the Davis home.

Our deepest sympathies to you all.

I first met Chuck in the early 1960s on the sailing team at the Academy. Though he was two years junior to me, he was a guy to remember. We reconnected in 1984 when I moved to Seattle. We became close in so many facets of life from that time forward.
Fair winds and following seas my friend.

As a former neighbor, I first met Chuck as he was camping with Boy Scouts in a field across the road on Samish Island. There was a lot of activity during those campouts, and what a joy to hear. Chuck will be sorely missed in his commitment to getting people outside.

As one of Chuck's cousins, words can't begin to say how sorry I am for all of those who loved and knew him. I remember talking to him at our last Davis family reunion in Sedro Woolley - I will carry that memory of him always.

I've known Chuck since I started practicing maritime law in Seattle in the early 80's. A true gentleman and a scholar; also fun to talk with about crazy cases. I will miss Chuck a great deal. I ache over the circumstances. Prayers to and for all !!

To the Davis Family,

Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies and know that our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

When I think of Chuck, I recall the many hours of volunteer- time he spent working with Queen Anne youth organizations and often in a leadership role Little League, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Helpline tree lot; taking time to attend Boy Scout Adult Leadership Training, Little League baseball skills clinic, and I am sure there are more. Chuck was a calm, wise, and patient presence for the boys, as well as at times, for adults.

The Davis Family was a blessing to our family and I am sure to many others on Queen Anne Hill.

May you find increasing comfort and peace with each passing day,

Jon & Mary Eytinge
