Edward High Obituary

Edward Jesse High, Sr.
Mr. High, 90, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Monday, December 6, 2010 at Charlotte Health Care Center.
Born on February 28, 1920 in Boston, MA, he was the second of seven children born to the late Clement R. High and Helen Jessie Stokes High. Ed attended Boston English High School and matriculated to North Carolina College for Negroes (now North Carolina Central University). World War II started and Ed served his country proudly in the China-Burma-India Theater as a Master Sergeant. After the war, he transferred to Columbia University Teacher's College in New York, where he received his B.S. Degree in Business Education and his M.A. Degree in Vocational Education.
Ed moved to Charlotte and worked as a postman; however, he longed to work as an accountant, the field in which he majored. In 1963, officials of Fund Investments Inc. offered him a job as Assistant Controller. Continually striving for higher aspirations, Ed became the Housing Manager for Fairview Homes. He also served as Chief of Administration for the Charlotte Area Fund and as Director of the Concentrated Employment Program for the Charlotte Area Fund. Before retiring in 1986, Ed served as Administrative Services Officer for the Charlotte Utility Department. Ed served faithfully in his church and in the community through numerous fraternal and civic organizations. He was an avid bridge player and instructor and Ed lived life to the fullest.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Naomi Watson High.
He leaves to cherish fond memories: daughter, Anita High Lewis of Charlotte, NC; son, Edward, II and his wife, Mary Lockamy-High of Mitchellville, MD; brother, Clement R. High and his wife, Barbara of Valley Stream, NY; grandchildren, Clifford and Jasmine Maree of Charlotte, NC and Endya and Maya High of Mitchellville, MD; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 1:00 pm with visitation 12:00-1:00 pm at First Baptist Church - West, 1801 Oaklawn Ave, Charlotte, NC 28216.
Long & Son Mortuary Service is serving the High Family.
