Richard Winters Obituary

WINTERS HERSHEY World War II Veteran, Richard 'Dick' Winters of Hershey, and formerly of Fredericksburg, passed away on Sunday, January 2, 2011, at Columbia Cottage in Palmyra. Dick was the son of the late Richard N. Winters and Edith Esbenshade Winters of Lancaster County. Raised in Ephrata and Lancaster, he graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in June 1941. He immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Private. After basic training he attended Officers Candidate School, deciding to become a paratrooper and during the war rose through the ranks to become a Major. After the loss of the Company Commander on the jump into Normandy on D-Day, Dick became Company Commander of Company E, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On D-Day morning, Dick led the company into the battle at Brecourt where they knocked out four German artillery pieces which were firing on the American soldiers landing on Utah Beach. For this action he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. He continued to lead Easy Company through the Holland Campaign, after which he was appointed Battalion Executive Officer. Dick led the battalion in the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne and was promoted to Battalion Commander. Dick then commanded the battalion through the final advance into Germany and Berchtesgaden in 1945. Dick's wartime exploits and experiences have been publicized world-wide by the book "Band of Brothers" by Stephen Ambrose, the HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers" and his personal memoir "Beyond Band of Brothers" written with the aid of his friend, Col. Cole Kingseed. After the war he worked at Nixon Nitration Works and Johnson and Johnson in New Jersey until he accepted a position as sales representative for Whitmoyer Laboratories in Myerstown, and later was a grain broker and distributor of animal nutritional products for Poorbaugh Grain, Lancaster. In 1971 he formed his own company R.D. Winters Supply Company Inc. to distribute animal feed products and nutritional supplies to feed mills. He later added R. D. Winters Inc. to sell Hershey by-products for animal feed. After twenty-five years in business he retired in 1996. Survivors include his wife of over sixty years, Ethel E. Winters; his son, Richard T. Winters husband, of Diana; and grandson, Jake. He is also survived by his daughter, Jill and her husband, Ed Peckelun. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Beatrice and his sister Ann Sheehan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any veteran's hospital.Funeral services were private. A public memorial service to celebrate his life will be announced shortly. I think the thing that has struck me most about Dick Winters is that he was humble. He glorified God without pomp and circumstance. He wanted peace and brought as much peace into war as a person can. He committed himself to excellence within and by doing so it showed up externally. He wanted to live his life in peace and promised God he would... what a beautiful promise. It was his internal self that was a hero, not his accomplishments...his accomplishments were a byproduct of who was internally as a man and the call of the times.

Although i only know him through the series band of brothers he muast have been a great man. I served 9 years in the military through the gulf wars and iraq wars. I know what it is like to become unusually close to strangers through serving. It is a strange thing how close you do become. Every time i watch the series "which is a lot " i find myself tearing up with them and how emotional they get so many years later. God bless you and your family.

Just the fact that, its over eight years after Major Winter's passing, and people are still writing condolences says much about this inspiring leader.

I was totally in awe of the portrayal of Major Winters in Band of Brothers. His leadership was far above any officer I had seen depicted in Hollywood.

He put his men before himself in matters of comfort. He put himself before his men in battle and in difficult situations. He was a TRUE leader.

I was recently headed to Hershey park on vacation back to my home state of PA. I passed the bridge dedicated to Major Winters and was unable to take a picture.

That is how I ended up here. Being a fellow Pennsylvanian his courage and leadership has inspired me for many years to always lead with compassion.

To his family I say thank you for allowing him to serve our nation. I hope one day, when my own life settles down, to read his book.

GOD Bless.

What a leader.... he is the poster child for the Greatest Generation. I have watched Band of Brothers several times all with a tear in my eye at the end where he very humbly states that he is not a hero, but he served in a company of hero's. I forced my children to watch (in the beginning) and now they too have watched several times. A great lesson in leadership, honor and duty reside within this mans character. His family and community should be very proud of him... I know I am.

I really appreciate the leadership skills Major Dick Winters displayed while leading his men across Europe in World War II. He was right saying they had a story to tell. Easy Company's success was tthe most inspiring and awesome story I've ever read about, and easily the best war story I've seen on video. I too wish I could have met Dick Winters. And he was a good family man who worked hard and succeeded after the war.

Major Richard Winters was a true Patriot & an American hero. After the BAND OF BROTHERS series, reading everything I could about Major Winters, the 506th, and the men that served under him. I watched interviews and bought dvd's, where Major Winters talked about his experiences during WWII and his men. My 'dream' was to meet Major Winters & some of his men on the Band of Brothers tour from Curahee to Hitler's mountaintop home. What a wonderful experience that would have been!!!
The respect & admiration that I experienced for Major Winters and his men is pride, respect, and appreciation for their service. Thousands gave their lives to fight against Nazism & tyranny and many were from the 506th...true hero's!!!!
Thank you for your service Major Winters & the men of the 506th...

I just finished watching Band Of Brothers with my whole family. Seeing the sacrifices and everything they went through made me realize life isn't as bad as I though and that I need to live it to the fullest. Seeing the unbelievable bond that these men shared is incredible and I will forever be grateful for Easy Company! When they all pass they go and join each other in Heaven watching over us all, and hanging out with each other. May he rest in peace as well as the others. You were a great leader and an awesome person though I never knew you personally. Thank You for your service Major Richard Winters. LONG LIVE EASY COMPANY!!!!

This was a tremendously inspiring and dedicated person who is no doubt a loss to us all. In fact we can be thankful that we have been enriched and in an equal degree protected by the many astounding and important national and even global defense measures over the years that this person has participated. May the family have peace we cherish the special memories. God's word says He will render judgment among the nations and set matters straight respecting many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, nor will they learn war anymore. May we all rejoice in this good news of everlasting peace. (Isaiah 2: 4) Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss.

Major Winters was one of the great soldiers that served with the airborne forces during WW II. The generations that follow may never totally understand the sacrifices and hardships endured by our soldiers especially during the Battle of the Bulge. My Dad was in the Ardennes Forest at the same time with an engineer bridging unit. He spoke very little about what he went through until near the end of his life. For all those heroes of the Greatest Generation that ended the threat of Nazism in Europe and defeated the Japanese in the Pacific, "Stay Calm.... Carry On Good and Faithful soldier." Jesus wrap your loving arms around our fallen comrades.
