Florence was our neighbor growing up there on 42nd. I always remember her infectious laugh. She treated the neighborhood kids like her own. Though I haven't seen her in decades I am happy to see she had a long and fulfilling life. My thoughts are with her family

My Grandma worked at Bill's Chicken Inn (later Bill's Chicken and Steak House), worked at Kaiser, and knew my Grandfather for five weeks before they got married.
I was born in a Kaiser hospital, married my wife eight weeks after we started dating, and we got married in the banquet room of Bill's Chicken and Steak House.
To say my Grandma had a big impact on my life is an understatement. Her home was literally the capitol of my family from before my first conscious memory. There's a swing out back under her awning that has held up the butts of four generations of Rowland's. There's a drawer in her kitchen with a slight dip under the right side from where my foot wore the wood from pulling it open with my toe to see if she had any Twinkie's. I learned to draw at her kitchen table. I learned to read from my aunt's old comic books in her basement. I learned to drive in their car. I dreamed dreams in her back yard.
You know how people at funerals always say the deceased was "a great man," even if the guy was a jerk? Well, my Grandma really and honestly WAS a great woman. You know how I know that? She raised four kids and two grandkids in a house with ONE BATHROOM! She was the best of us. She was kind, she was funny, she was generous, she was a friend to everyone who walked in her door. If you were in her house, she was going to feed you. She tried to never have an unkind word about anybody. She was stalwart, brave, single-minded, determined, courageous, calm under pressure, and her hair was always perfect.
...and she was my Grandma.
She was amazing.
