Sylvia Pilver Obituary

Sylvia Pilver, 102, of Glastonbury, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2019. She was the beloved wife for 50+ years of the late Sidney L. Pilver. She was born April 25, 1917 in Bialystok, Poland, the daughter of Jacob and Rebecca (Gelbard) Cohn. She sailed to America and entered via Ellis Island at the age of six accompanied by her mother. They joined with her father and two older siblings already in the U.S.A. Sylvia resided in Hartford for many years and then in West Hartford. Sylvia graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1935 as a member of the National Honor Society. She was employed as a bookkeeper for the Bregman Real Estate Company and as an administrator with Weight Watchers Inc. Sylvia was a lifelong learner who was inquisitive, philosophizing about life and engaging in political topics. Sylvia was a past member of the Agudas Achim synagogue in Hartford and Temple Beth Hillel in Bloomfield. The most important thing to Sylvia was her family, and she loved them all. Her close friends, some she maintained from childhood, and others she acquired through her life were very important as well. She was always interested in the well-being of family members and friends. She loved family gatherings and enjoyed get-togethers with her many friends. Her favorite past times included playing Mah Jong and gin rummy. Sylvia was recognized by the Greater Hartford Retired & Senior Volunteer Program for her 1,460 Lifetime Hours of service. Sylvia had a quick wit that amazed people, even after she achieved the century mark, bringing a laugh or smile to others. She was very well liked by her neighbors while she resided at Federation Square Housing in West Hartford and dearly missed when she had to leave for health reasons. She was very much admired by the staff at Glastonbury Health Care Center and brought smiles to their faces when cracking jokes. The care provided by the Health Care Center is very much appreciated. Sylvia is survived by son Allan Pilver and his wife Elaine (Barry) Pilver, son Melvyn Pilver and his wife Michele (Sherman) Pilver, grandchildren Kenneth Pilver, Adam Pilver, Daniel Pilver, and Susan (Pilver) Cote; and by great grandchildren Nate Pilver, Rachel Pilver, Joseph Pilver, Levi Cote, Amber Cote, and Jasper Cote and several nieces and nephews. Besides her late husband, Sylvia was predeceased by her infant child, Lewis Pilver, sisters Chia Cohn, Yudit Cohn, Marcia (Cohn) Pregozen, and brother, Elias Cohn. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery, 74 Wolcott Rd., East Granby, adjacent to the Simsbury airport. Shiva will be observed following the cemetery service on the afternoon and evening at the home of Allan Pilver, 68 Fairview Drive, South Windsor, CT, 06074. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations are sent to a charity of the donor's choice. Funeral arrangements provided by Hebrew Funeral Association, West Hartford.

Al,
Sorry to read about your mother, I had no idea that you have those long term genes in your family. My father was born in 1906 and my mother in 1911, lasting until they were around 80. Some stories your mother must have told. I had an aunt the worked for Thomas Edison in NJ. She told stories about chasing an "automobile" down a dirt street as a child, watching the first airplanes fly, viewing TV, seeing men walk on the moon, etc. All we did was build the best nuclear power plants in the world (not a shabby accomplishment). I've been retired for 14 years and really don't miss that rat race. Hope you're still out there saving the environment. Best wishes going forward.

My sincere condolences to you Al, Mel and your family. As the former receptionist at GHCC, it was my pleasure to see your mom every day. She was always friendly and smiling, a true ray of sunshine. I asked her what her secret to a long life is, she said be honest, stay out of trouble, and do the best you can at whatever you're doing. She will be missed and remembered fondly

My condolences to Allen and Melvin on the passing of your mother. It's been many years since the Cabot Street days, but I remember them still...and especially your mom. May her memory be as a blessing.
