CHARLES ADKINS Obituary

DR. CHARLES GLENN ADKINS M.D., passed peacefully into the arms of his savor on January 12, 2016 after a long illness. At his side was his loving wife and caregiver, Deede. Born March 26, 1925 to Chapman and Ellen Ross Adkins. After graduating Wayne High School, Charlie served as an Army Medic during WWII. While stationed at the Greenbrier Hotel, he had the distinct privilege of driving General Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower in his jeep. When the war was over he attended Marshall College, West Virginia University and graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School. His first practice was at Coalwood, W.Va., serving the coal community where he often drove mountainous roads late at night to provide medical needed medical services. Later he returned to further his education at Duke University for a residency in Anesthesiology and the University of Florida with a residency in radiology. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Julian (Ada Pearl) and James Adkins; sisters, Pearl Ross, Gladys Thompson Ross Hagar (Charlie Drenner) and Violet (Hal) Ross. Survivors include his loving wife, Deede, a brother, Dr. Claude Adkins (Anne); a sister, Eileen "Peach" Asbury; six children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He had many happy memories of over fifty nephews and nieces scattered among many states. Charlie loved the outdoors spending his early years hunting, fishing and playing golf. His family and medical practice were the joys of his life.
