Calvin Anderson Obituary

Calvin James Anderson died at his home in Wellfleet, MA on Monday, October 22, 2018. He was born November 24, 1926 in Delavan, MN to Albert and Theresa Anderson. He is one of five children and is predeceased by his sister, Marceline, and his brothers, Hanford and Howard. His sister, Dee (Delores), lives in New Ulm, MN.

On his way to being captain of the basketball team and valedictorian, Calvin left high school at age 17 to join the United States Navy. He did a tour of duty in the Pacific Ocean as a radio man aboard the carrier Point Cruz. After the war, he attended Gustavus Adolphus University. Following graduation, he secured a position with the State Department as a diplomatic courier and traveled the world. His next position was with the CIA, where he met his wife, Nina Anne Murphy. They were married on July 7, 1956 in Longmeadow, MA. Calvin and Nina lived in Northern Virginia before moving to Westport, Connecticut in 1966. He worked with Mobil Oil in New York City, and then with Union Carbide in Danbury, CT. During his time in Connecticut, Cal had an illustrious career as a Little League umpire, receiving Umpire of the Year in 1980. In 1984, Calvin and Nina moved to Chapel Hill, NC, where he worked with Rhone Poulenc (Union Carbide) before retiring in 1991. The couple moved to Wellfleet, where Cal enjoyed his retirement and had active roles with Chequessett Golf and Tennis Club, Council on Aging, and Meals on Wheels. His hobbies included golfing, shell-fishing, and being a master sorter of bottles and cans at the Wellfleet Transfer Station.

Cal is survived by his wife, Nina, his three children Ted (Frederick), Britt, and Eric, and Eric's wife, Maria Juster, and his three loving grandchildren, Eilish, Kerstin, and Charlie. He also leaves a sister, Dee, sister-in-law, LaNore, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 1 PM at Our Lady of Lourdes in Wellfleet (Route 6). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gustavus Adolphus College, 800 W.
