Brooke Maupin Obituary

Brooke Butt Maupin PORTSMOUTH - Brooke Butt Maupin died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center; she was 88. Born in Portsmouth, Brooke Marshall Butt was an eleventh generation resident of Norfolk County. She was the daughter of Elsie B. Butt and noted author and historian Marshall W. Butt, founder and director of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School (1938) and was married to Edward Samuel Maupin, also of Portsmouth. They lived for many years in Richmond before returning to Olde Towne Portsmouth where Mr. Maupin died in 1982. Sharing her father's devotion to local history, Mrs. Maupin worked for sometime at the Portsmouth Public Library as head of their History Room. She was a longstanding member of Trinity Episcopal Church and had lately been a resident at Churchland House. She is survived by her brother, Marshall W. Butt Jr. (U.S. Army retired) of Portsmouth; her son, Edward Samuel Maupin Jr., daughter-in- law Diane G. Maupin and grandson, Oliver G. Maupin of Fairfield, Conn. A funeral will be held at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth on Tuesday, March 2, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. John R. Throop officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Portsmouth Historical Association, 221 North St., Portsmouth, VA 23704. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements.

Getting to know Brook was truly wonderful. She was very warm and loving lady and was a true friend to my dad. We are so glad we had the opportunity to share some time with her and we truly came to love her. You have our deepest and sincerest sympathy for your loss.
