SOUTH BEND - David Peter James III, age 71, residing in South Bend, Indiana, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was a beloved musician, social activist, and teacher.
He was born on October 29, 1946 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Peter F. and Anne (Ball) James and resided in the South Bend area since the 1960's.
David is survived by his life partner, Kim Hoffman of South Bend; son and daughter-in-law, Ethan James and Bess Zelle of Arlington, VA; his grandchildren, Clara and Xavier; and a sister, Judy.
A Celebration of Life event will be held on March 4 from 1pm-4pm at The St. Patrick's Church Hall (308 S. Scott St., South Bend, IN 46601). All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, The The Civil Rights Heritage Center, or The LGBTQ Center.

We date back to 1968, we were housemates at South Street in SB, we were housemates at 'The Palace' - 711 Leland Road in S. B., we were in 'The Occasional Bluegrass Band' with Mike Powers and Eddie McNamara, I gave Queenie away at their wedding in 1969, I am Godfather to Ethan, born in 1971.
I introduced him to the work of the author P.G. Wodehouse, for which he was very grateful, I remember the Fr. Groppi gig in the summer of 1968,
I remember many times when we were there for each other, which is as it should be.
Farewell my friend - you are in my prayers.
