Suanne was one of my mother's (Jane Allen Walker Compton) first cousins through the Allen line. I was in touch with Suanne last year after my mother died in 2016 and she wrote me several very nice notes of condolence. My father and I are sad to learn of Suanne's passing. She was a real force for good in many ways and I know she was very well respected throughout her life. Our sympathies to the family.

One of the most vivid memories in my career as community college advocate was as a witness to her acceptance speech when Suanne received the Leadership Award from the American Association of Community Colleges. Without one note or visual support, she OWNED the stage, as she spoke at length of the strong women in her family and the impact that Texas heritage had on her values and life goals. We were all mesmerized. As a woman and a fellow Texan, I vicariously shared her pride and was awestruck by her intensity and honesty. Her life honored the heritage of which she was so proud, and it enriched and inspired all who were fortunate enough to know her.

In loving remembrance of Suanne Davis Roueche by Gloria Adams Ballard. Suanne and I became best friends at North Dallas School. Later we both attended NTSU where I was her big sister in Delta Gamma. Beautiful and gifted, she was a beloved friend.

Upon hearing of Suanne's passing, I immediately felt loss for John and the entire Roueche family, but then I realized that God just needed a world class writer, editor, and researcher, animal rescuer, and of course someone to guide him. We are all going to miss her but I'm sure you will agree with me when I say-I know I'm a better person because of Suanne Davis Roueche. Al Barringer Block 55

Dear John and family:
Words can not capture the sadness of losing Suanne. She was one of a king lady, scholar, leader, mentor, and animal protector. Her work has inspired hundreds of women leaders who will carry her name forward as a role model as a servant leader. May she enjoy God's presence and give you the strength you need during this difficult time. I sincerely hope that the memories of happy time spent with her nurture your heart for ever.
Most sincerely,

Dr. Suanne Roueche was a leader in higher education and a pioneer in the community college movement. From serving as a brilliant faculty member to leading NISOD to new heights, she made an indelible impact. Although I never had a chance to meet her, I was the recipient of the award named in her honor. I cherish that recognition because no one served students better than she did. Her legacy is the millions of lives she changed for the better.

Dr. Suanne Roueche was an inspiration for me. When she spoke at the college I was working at in 2000 I made a commitment to myself to apply to the graduate program in community college leadership at the University of Texas. I waited five years to become eligible for a sabbatical leave at the college and then applied to the program in 2005. Suanne and John have continued to inspire me every day through their scholarship, mentorship, and friendship. I cannot express how heavy my heart is for John and his family during this difficult time. I know her work and her love for education will go on and continue inspire many many students and educational scholars in the years to come.

Suanne was a beautiful and gracious woman who understood and cared deeply about at-risk students, and who made significant contributions to the work of transforming community colleges. It was impressive to watch Suanne at the Assistance League's annual luncheon to honor ACC scholarship students and their mentors. She knew them, and their stories, and she beamed with pride as they shared how their lives were changing for the better. Suanne was a dreamer and a builder, a pragmatist and a strategist with deep insights into the human condition, an exceptional writer and editor, and one who served always to make a difference. She leaves a lasting legacy.

What a beautiful tribute to an exceptional woman. I have so many fond memories of Suanne, but three come to mind whenever Jackie and I speak of her:
Her love of animals - My first month in the CCLP, she volunteered to loan me money for surgery when Joey, our Australian Shepard, hurt her leg. I don't remember if I accepted the loan, but I definitely heeded Suanne's advice to get Joey's knee taken care of immediately. And then when I returned to Austin to defend my dissertation, Suanne went to the bed and breakfast to walk Joey so she didn't have to stay cooped up in a strange room all day. Joey loved that nice lady with the sweet voice.
Her commitment to her student's success - For two months, while I worked non-stop on my dissertation, she allowed me to email sections for her review. She'd print the pages, paint them with red ink, and send them back via snail-mail. I'd open the packages with a mix of trepidation and gratitude, and proceed to learn from a master author/editor/teacher.
Her love of people, no matter their status - I remember chuckling at a NISOD happy hour as I watched Jackie, my partner, snag Suanne's attention away from a group of college presidents. Politely, of course, Suanne turned to hug Jackie and proceeded to share tales of her latest possum rescue. In a room full of people, she made Jackie feel like the most important guest, at least for five joyous minutes.
As much as I'm sure her family is missing her beautiful smile, I trust they are smiling as people share stories of what a difference she made in their lives. I truly don't believe I have ever met a nicer, smarter, funnier, more gracious lady than Dr. Suanne Davis Roueche. It was my honor to have had her in my life as a teacher, mentor, and friend. I will miss her greatly anticipated emails, as she was a gifted storyteller who never failed to make me smile.
Love and well wishes to you, John, and your wonderful family.

It has been my honor to have known Dr. Suanne Roueche as my professor in the Community College Leadership Program, and later as a friend and colleague. She and her husband and partner, Dr. John Roueche, have been two of the most important scholars of the Community College Movement. Their publications have addressed and documented the most important challenges and accomplishments of this unique segment of higher education. Suanne inspired us to become better, and her spirit lives on in all of the people who were privileged to have known her.
