It was always a celebratory occasion, full of excitement and anticipation when we as a young couple and our friends had dinner at Tony's. I had a special friend, Toni
Boynton, from Salt Lake and San Francisco, who insisted we go to Tony's whenever she came to town. To her dying day, she would inquire if Tony's were still the leading restaurant in St. Louis.

I remain grateful for the graciousness shown to my Aunt Helen who worked for Tony's for close to 40 years. She was called Helena by Mr. Bommarito. Peace and comfort to the family and to the soul of Mr. Bommarito in God's Kingdom.

I first met Vince in 1962 when I went to Tonys for dinner. I was a Sophomore in High School trying to impress my date.Vince was standing right in front of the door like he knew I was coming in. He smiled , He introduced himself & I did likewise . Once I said my name Vince named almost my whole entire Family . He was sincere warm & pleasant . There was constant eye contact when Vince spoke to me. I instantly caught how polished & genuine he was. I knew right away that I had just met a gentleman like no other person I had ever met. That was 57 Years ago. Over the past years we had lunch together in restaurants that well are not 5 Star , it didn't matter to him or me. He liked to read newspapers as we ate & talked. He would read in the newspaper that things were not right in the world and would offer his solution to fix it. He told me that when he met his wife Martha that he knew he would make her his wife. I asked him how did you know ? Vince took his hand and tapped on his heart & replied I could feel it in here. Over the years of dining there for me it was more that I was going to see a friend but I also ate some amazing food on & off the menu. Food that I still remember like it was last week. The very last time I saw Vince he was walking out of the door of Dr Birenbaum his Primary Doctor. I went to greet him with a handshake and hug . He looked at me and said i'm taking dialysis now Vince then as he said a few hundred times , What are you gonna do . I got to get to the restaurant. Anthony was waiting to drive him back to the restaurant. That's the last time I saw Vince. What a gentleman & Friend you are . May God Bless You and Your Family , They miss you already.

Beyond the business side of life, Vince was, simply put, one of the nicest men you could ever know...with a sense of humor to match. Making his way from table to table wasn't just a ritualistic chore for him__ it was the prism through which he saw and connected with the people in his life. Sure at the end of the day it's a business, but it was also a man and his families life and that's how it felt. Like you were coming into the heart of this family and he wanted you to feel special and welcome like you never have been anywhere before. It worked.

My grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Harry Hartman introduced "dining out" to me as a very young girl. The 3 hour dinners we enjoyed at Tony's included many laughs and conversations that molded my childhood and beyond. Vince was always welcoming and made each experience memorable. We celebrated many special occasions as well as just regular Saturday nights in his presence.
A void will certainly be felt as St Louis has lost a legend. My prayers to the family.

Hope and I were really saddened to learn of Vince's passing. A great man and friend is gone. It was a privilige to know you and yours. So sorry to hear.
He was a legend, he will be missed by all.
Vince was a friend of our family, my father, a well known boxer, long ago played baseball with Vince and Vince did some boxing, too.
I dined at Tony's often, he always talked about my dad when I was with clients, or friends, or family.
What a master of the restaurant business he was! What a culture: the best food, the best ambiance, the best service! He visited every table, everybody felt they were important, because to Vince, they were!
My condolences.

A legend is gone. What a great man and so accommodating to our family. My father, Harry Hartman's, favorite restaurant and dined as often as Mom, Mrs. Hartman would dress to go. It was my honor & previlge to experience such fine dining as a young girl and then to introduce to my family. His 5 star dining set the highest bar and ruined my expectations of every restaurant thereafter.
Our deepest condolences & prayers to the family. Lovingly, Reed & Hartman family

We are a four generation Tony's family. My parents started going to the old spaghetti house and then took me and my three brothers to the North Broadway location for all special occasions. And how special they were as we remember Vince, Herbie (walking up the stairs backwards) and Ruby at the coatcheck, along with all the wonderful servers and staff. My brothers and I then followed Tony's when it moved, this time bringing our children to such a special place. And now, the fourth generation has dined in elegance. Vince was Tony's and always made sure everything was perfect. He was the best.

My family and I are extremely grateful and fortunate for having Vince in our lives. He taught us all about striving for the highest degree of excellence - no matter what you do or pursue in life. His impact will be everlasting for us all.
Because of Vince's charisma and power to think with clear logic, we are now more alert and more able to deal with challenges. Because of how he worked productively, we better understand what it means to be productive. Because of his sense of humor, his joy of life, his laughter, we are better able to see things in perspective and to laugh and enjoy life. And because he was kind and compassionate, generous and loving, then we value and appreciate more these qualities, with each passing day. And the most wonderful fact is that when he leaves us, we don't lose what he gave us, what he brought forth in us. We are better people because he lived. The world is a better place because he lived. He gave us a great gift: his life, his influence and his presence. We will treasure his image in our conscious, and in our consciousness. In darkness, we will always see more clearly because he lived. And when we remember him, it will be as if he were present, and we will think more clearly and show more integrity and know more of what it means to love. God Bless you Vince.
Prayers and love to the Bommarito Family, Co-workers and Circle of Friends.

My husband and I are celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary in May. As always, we made reservations for 2 at Tony's well in advance. Starting with dinner on our wedding night, and then every anniversary after that, Vince stopped at our table and inspire us with his loving stories about he and his wife. We will miss his graciousness, his ability to make every custormer feel special and his dedication to quality in every detail of the dining experience. But mostly, we will miss his sweetness and his smile.

A few years ago, I was a culinary student at Forest Park Community College. One of my assignments was to choice a profession within a restaurant and research/write about it, and interview someone currently involved with that profession. I chose the
the sommelier. I called Tony's and asked to speak to their sommelier, and was told that was Mr V. Bommarito. He was not there but I was told to call back later at a specific time and I could speak with him then. I didn't think I would actually get him, but I called back at the prescribed time and asked for him: What an incredible conversation. After I introduced myself and explained why I was calling, there was a pause, and then he said..."So what do you want to know?" What seemed like an hour later, probably more like 20-30 minutes, I thanked him and started to say goodbye. Before I could, he said something like, "Next time your in, look me up and we will have a glass of wine together." What a gracious, humble, caring, individual. Sorry we never got to have that wine.

In the late 1970s, I first met Vince at one of the first meetings of the Alphonso J. Cervantes Convention Center Commission Meetings. As I recall, his first words were, "We gotta this place clean." He had clearly made an inspection tour of the brand new building and wasn't happy. He brought the same passion to serving his "customers" at the Convention Center that he did to Tony's. He had an unmatched genius for hospitality and attention to detail. Vince Bommarito will undoubtedly be remembered, along with Tony Faust, as two legendary restaurateurs of St. Louis. Rest in peace, Vince, it was a privilege to have known you!

Having Kim Tucci and Vince Bommarito pass in the same week brought back a memory of our daughter Lauras wedding. Both of those fine men, along with their wives, and Mr. and Mrs Joe Fresta were guests at the reception. I told the chef at the Missouri Athletic Club where we held the wedding reception, No pressure... but these three legends are among our guests for the reception dinner! No pressure indeed!! A great Memory.

On a June day in 1968, I was promoted to an elementary school principalship in Granite City. As a part-time employee at Tony's, I went into to work that evening, and Vince said, "Put on the white tie." That meant I had been promoted to a waiter. I was more proud of becoming a waiter at Tony's than becoming a principal of a school.
I told Vince several times, his guidance and attention to details taught me how to manage a school. So many wonderful memories of the Tony's experience.

Our family has many fond memories of Vince, from the award he received as cavalliere , to the very sweet Christmas cards he would send. A very funny moment when he visited our home while we were cooking . HE snuck up behind me, ended up with splatters of bechemel, noting it needed more Swiss. We never lived it down, and we'd joke about it years later. He was amazing, an inspiration, a legend. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

What I will remember most about Vince is that he made you feel like you were the most important person in the room. Last visit he gave me a business card and told me to call him if I ever need anything. He likely gave that card to every diner that evening, but he made me feel like he was doing that just for me. After, he invited me and my parents to be his guest for that same dinner but I asked if I could bring a prom date instead and he laughed and said sure! It was my first Wonderful evening of many at Tony's !

Tony's was always a place for special occasions and Vince never failed to stop by

I am heart broken to hear this news. Vince Bommarito taught me everything. He was the toughest boss but he was equally tough on himself. I try to run my business the way he ran his. Vince - a wonderful man who loved his craft, but he especially loved his family and was so proud of them. Christmas cards were a treat as we watched the children grow and then have children of their own. He made everyone feel special. My mom took me to Tony's for my seventh birthday and I felt like a princess. Some years later she worked for Tony's and Vince, being the family oriented man he was, gave me my first job opportunity fresh out of high school. I saw the staff every day - many of them were working with their brothers or cousins. Some of them went on to become successful in the restaurant world themselves thanks to Vince's selfless mentoring. My mom was so proud to work there. The awards were many over the years. But, the blessing truly was knowing this awesome person. I can still recall the hustle and bustle down at 826 N Broadway nearly 50 years ago as Vince and his staff prepared for the show' and welcoming everyone to the restaurant like they were royalty. He definitely set the gold standard in St. Louis for dining and he will be missed very much.
May God bless and comfort the Bommarito family. Sending love and prayers.

My parents took me there when my uncle Meyer came to visit. We got all dressed up and I got to wear my new Mary Janes. It was so nice and the waiter put my napkin in my lap and lit my Mothers cigarette. it felt like we were special. I loved going there and the food was wonderful! As I got bigger I didn't get to anymore. I then had a date take me and we got all dressed up and we were treated like we were special. I really was a grown up now and was lucky to have gone there so many times. It was class with food added ! Tony will be missed by all of the people he made feel so special when he came to the table, including this little girl. I'm old now but it will always be a wonderful memory!

I remember a night in 1958. My wife who was very pregnant were waiting in the bar for a table. There were no seats so she sat in the phone booth while we waited.. it was a special night. I still remember the waiter lighting our cigarettets and we felt special.. George Metzger

I was a medical student at Washington University in the 1960's. There were only seven females in my class. We celebrated the end of each year with a night out at Tony's. We were always treated royally, given tours of the kitchen, and special attention from Tony himself. These night nights remain among my fondest memories of those years.

Vince was a pillar of the St. Louis community -- truly a legend -- the best restaurateur ever -- my dear friend and colleague for 35 years.

My Uncle Sam Bommarito after we saw Vince's aunts Sarah and Rose on saturday mornings would take me to the old Tony's when I was young. Vince would say to me. Go outside and watch the parking lot and help Uncle Louie. I will really miss you cuz. My regards to the family and God bless you.

A sad day not only for the family, but for all of St. Louis. A good and kind man has left us, but the great memories will be his legacy.

Vince, you will be greatly missed. You have made every one of my birthdays a special occasion, especially when you hosted my 50th birthday party. Always a gentleman with all of us ladies and always saying hello to everyone.

My family has celebrated all our most important events at Tony's - anniversaries, births, high school graduations. What an exceptional legacy you have left your family, your restaurant and your city. You will truly be missed!

My late father would take me to Tony's when
I was a kid, and we visited St Louis.
A memory I will never forget.
The greeting at the door, of walking backwards
Up the stairs to the restaurant was really
Something to remember of the staff.
My father is gone now, but in his name,
I plan on coming back to Tony's, & St Louis
Someday.
