George Lackman Obituary

TAMPA - George Lackman's quirkier accomplishments include supervising construction of the Jose Gasparilla pirate ship and becoming its captain, building the submarines and stern-wheeler for Walt Disney World and inventing a weed-resistant boat propeller that bass anglers swear by. Along the way, the Tampa native, who began work life as a mechanic's assistant in a local shipyard, founded a bank, served as president of a handful of companies and helped save Tampa General Hospital. He died Saturday at age 77. "He was very bright, but above that, he had more common sense than just about anybody I ever met," said George Howell, chairman of the Tampa Bay History Center, who came to know Lackman when he served on the board. Lackman died from lung disease related to asbestos exposure as a young shipyard worker, said his son, Peter, a local accountant. Born in Palmetto Beach, south of Ybor City, Lackman spent most of his career at Tampa Ship Repair and Dry Dock, working his way up to vice president. During the 1960s, he contracted with Roy Disney to build the submarines and stern-wheeler and refurbish the steam locomotives for Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Orlando, which opened in 1971. He also supervised construction of the Jose Gasparilla, a barge that Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla uses during the annual pirate invasion and festival. He steered the vessel as the Krewe's "sailing master" for 35 years. He also worked with famous bass pro Doug Hannon, inventing an electric boat propeller that prevented entanglement in weeds. He boasted the proceeds from the invention put his kids through college. Lackman was founding chairman and president of Citrus Park Bank, which was sold to Florida National Bank in 1985. He later started the first Tampa area private banking program for First Union Bank, retiring as vice president of corporate development. He was president of Nutri-Sol Chemical Co., Marine Insulation Co., Corban Industries and Acetogen Gas Co. of Florida. He started the Genesis Clinic to provide prenatal care to the poor, helping reduce infant mortality in the Tampa Bay area. And he served two terms as chairman of the Hillsborough County Hospital Board. "When Tampa General first started having problems, he was the guiding force that brought everybody else together and got them out of trouble," Howell said. Peter Lackman said his father's ability to get to the root of problems, breaking them down to their most basic elements, contributed greatly to his success. "That's where he got everyone on his side."

So many bad puns, so little time. We will do our best to carry on alone, blues brother.

George was my life-long best friend since 1943 and served as mine and Dell's Best Man at our wedding in 1962. Our son, Newman, was born on his birthday on January 26, 1968.
We shared many bachelor adventures and happy memories through the years. His academic integrity was formed at an early age. As a Lieutenant in ROTC in High School, he was scheduled to serve as Officer of the Day. Unfortunately, there was a Math Test scheduled at that same time. Facing an important moral dilemma in his young life, he chose to take the math test and accepted the consequences for his decision.
When I was a Doctoral candidate at FSU and needed one more course to complete my requirements, I needed to drive from Tampa to Tallahassee once a week for six weeks. At that time, I was driving an English Ford (Anglia), which would have been challenged to take the trip. George insisted that I take his 1955 Cadillac, which left him with my English Ford, to squire his dates for the weekend. What a friend!

I worked with George at First Union and remember him to be a very noble and thoughtful man who went out of his way to help others. He will be missed.

The Frank McLane family, formerly of Tampa (now of Tallahassee), would like George's family to know how much we care that he is gone. He was a phenomenal man and probably saved everyone's life, from time to time. We all looked to him for inspiration and with pride. Thank you, George, for all that you did, big and small.

I will always remember that we were in for a good time with lots of laughs when our cousin Little George came to our house to visit. He told us funny stories and always talked to us like we were very special to him. I remember when his mother, my aunt nana, told me he had named his daughter after me - what an honor. He was and is a very special man whom I will be glad to see again on the "other side".

I KNEW GEORGE LACKMAN FROM LIVING ON KEYSTONE LAKE AND ALSO WORKING AT CITRUS PARK BANK. HE WAS A KIND AND GENTLE MAN, BUT HE WAS ALSO "ALL" BUSINESS. I ADMIRED HIS ABILITY TO PICK UP ON THE SMALLEST OF PROBLEMS AND RESOLVE THEM WITHOUT ANY EFFORT. MR. LACKMACK YOU WILL BE MISSED! I HADN'T SEEN YOU IN A LONG TIME BECAUSE I HAD MOVED AWAY FROM THE CITRUS PARK KEYSTONE AREA BUT YOU WERE ALWAYS IN MY MEMORIES. TO THE LACKMAN FAMILY YOU ALL ARE IN MY PRAYERS.

Fifty years ago when I was reparing to graduate from high school, my nt Nana made me a beautiful red chiffon prom dress. Little George invited me to his house and taught me how to tango and then took me to my prom dance. Unbeknownst to me he went to the band leader and ask to play a tango. He then proceeded to take me out to the dance floor and we danced the tango by ourselves in front of my entire graduating class.
Little George, thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me such a proud moment and a beautiful memory.
God bless you and your family.
Your cousin, Shirley

I'm thankful for all the wonderful memories that "Uncle" George was able to provide me when we lived next door. I will always remember the tractor rides, being able to use limes off their tree to make limeade to bring over and share, and all the wondeful stories that he had to share. I'm so lucky that I had him in my life. We haven't lost you, we've just gained someone to watch over us and help guide our sails in the right direction.
