Charles Knapp Obituary
Charles was born in Willimantic, Feb. 1, 1934, to Doris D. Drouin and Charles Knapp. He lived in Pawcatuck where he attended the West Broad Street School and Stonington High School, graduating in 1953. Following school, he joined the United States Army, serving his tour of duty in Korea during the Korean War as a company supply sergeant. Following the war, he worked at Electric Boat in Groton for a period of 35 years, starting as an apprentice while attending Mitchell College at night for mechanical engineering. He worked his way up to Superintendent of the Outside Machinist Department.
Charles enjoyed stock car racing and drove at the Waterford Speed Bowl for three years. He also was an avid bowler at the Norwich Ten Pin in two leagues. He also pitched competition horseshoes in the New London County League for over 30 years, winning many championships and awards with his team. Charles was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post # 4 in Norwich for 54 years. He loved boating, scuba diving and gardening.
Charles is survived by two daughters, Cheryl H. Bailey, wife of John Bailey III of Plainfield, and Charon A. Knapp of Voluntown, fiancée of Calvin T. Cobb; two grandchildren, Michelle Bailey-Tornheim, wife of Chaim, John Bailey IV, husband of Nicole; and two great-grandchildren, John Bailey V and Marnie Bailey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2025, at St. Michael Church, 60 Liberty Street, Pawcatuck. Burial with full military honors will take place at St. Michael Cemetery, Pawcatuck. There are no calling hours. Dear Charon and Cheryl,
Our sincere condolences go out to you both. We lived next to your dad and sweet mom for many years and were happy to have them as our neighbors. My memories of your dad were a picture perfect yard and seeing him take his daily walks on Babcock Road carrying a black riding crop. He was a great guy. May he Rest In Peace.

I started out as a nuclear machinist and Mr. Knapp gave very good guidance and foresight. Great guy to work for ,he helped me through some bad times and I will never forget him , thank you and my condolences to the Knapp family . Rip
