Karl Olsson Obituary

Niantic - Karl Olsson, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, friend, and longtime resident of Niantic, passed away peacefully two and a half hours into his 86th birthday July 20, 2025, surrounded by those he loved most. He was born July 20, 1939, in New London to Melvin and Adriah Olsson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Melvin and Donald Olsson; and his beloved wife of 47 years, Glenda Sue Olsson.

Affectionately known as Dad and Pop, Karl lived a life centered around family. He was a steadfast companion and loving partner to Glenda, and he leaves behind the greatest treasures of his life - his three children: Craig Tomlin and his wife Mary of Hamden, Stephanie Brungard of Waterford, and David Olsson and his wife Jennifer also of Waterford.

Karl's greatest joy was being a grandfather. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Matthew and Ryan Tomlin; Maddie Brungard; and Kira, Levi, and Travis Olsson. Each of whom he loved beyond measure. All were proudly (and secretly) inducted into Pop's whimsical, members-only "Bum Club", a treasured tradition filled with laughter, adventure, and unforgettable memories.

Karl proudly served in the United States Army, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after 33 years of dedicated service. In addition to his honorable military career, he and Glenda were local business owners, operating Zips Ice Cream Parlor in Midway Plaza and later Hertz car rental in Groton.

Together, Karl and Glenda were known for their warm and generous hospitality. Their home was a gathering place, where friends and family were always welcome, whether for a cup of coffee, a cheeseburger, or Karl's legendary pancakes. Their Memorial Day cookouts and Christmas Eve celebrations, complete with their "dangerous" champagne punch, became cherished traditions. Karl was a man of quiet strength, kindness, humility, and integrity. He embodied the values of his generation and was a true gentleman in every sense. Now reunited with his beloved Glenda, Karl leaves behind a legacy rooted in love, character, and family. We are endlessly grateful for the joyful, secure, and idyllic childhood he gave us. His presence shaped our lives in countless ways, and his love will remain with us always. He was so thankful for his community of support and love, and in his words he "appreciates you more than you know."

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in his name. To sign the online guest book visit www.fultontherouxniantic.com.
