Morgan Powelson Obituary

Morgan C. Powelson

February 3, 1965 – June 9, 2025

Morgan C. Powelson, 61, passed away on 9 June 2025, at Sutter Roseville Medical Center, due

to heart failure.

Morgan was born in Utah on 3 February 1965. In 1973 his family moved to Nevada County, settling in the Little Town of Washington, where he lived for the rest of his life.

He graduated from Nevada Union High School in 1983 and became a union carpenter. His highly competent skill and strong work ethic were greatly valued by all who employed him. He was also treasured as a loyal friend, whose integrity was absolute.

Growing up next to the Yuba River as a free-range country kid, he enthusiastically rode his bike

on trails, and then his motorcycle to explore the back roads. Early on he loved playing baseball

and was a formidable fuss-ball player; later he excelled at horseshoe-tossing. He was also a sure-shot, whether at the pool table or with a shotgun vs a pesky drone. He was a master at barbecuing steaks, an avid fisherman, and dedicated bird-watcher. He always knew just where

and how to find gold, whether by panning or dredging.

Those early experiences informed the quintessential mountain man he was to become. Although

he sired no children, "Uncle Kit" became a mentor and role model for several young men, teaching them the skills he had acquired.

His enthusiasm for reading, especially for sci-fi and fantasy, inspired his nephew to explore the

world of books. His essentially kind and gentle nature were fully evident while sharing the "male" secrets of fishing with his niece.

He generously cared for his aging elders in a tender, loving way. His good humor and delightfully

infectious laughter were much appreciated by all who knew him.

Morgan is survived by his loving sister Jodi Tharan, Adira Tharan (niece), Isaiah Tharan and

Deva Taylor (nephew and wife), Ben Tharan (nephew), and his forever family: Abuela Cereza, Miguel and Thomas.

He is predeceased by his mother MamaSu Morgan DeCorte and step-father Hank DeCorte.

The family extends special thanks to Sam and Anna Crockett for their longtime friendship, assistance and support.

No memorial service is planned at this time.

Memorial donations may be made to Friends of Nevada County Libraries.

Morgan was a truly wonderful friend. We met in high school where he became my second true love. We only lived about three blocks from each other, so we went to the same bus stop & rode the same bus. Morgan and I also spent a lot of our time at the arcades in Nevada City where he taught me to play fuss-ball, which I still love to this day. If we weren't at the arcade, then you could usually find us at the river or enjoying a hot tub at Misty Mountain Tubs, which was next door to his mom's shop Mama Sue's Squeeze In in Nevada City. May he rest in peace.
