Alan CLAPP Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Apr. 20 to Apr. 21, 2013.
CLAPP, Alan Conway
February 10th, 1930 - April 9th, 2013
It is with sadness that we are announcing the passing of our father Alan Conway Clapp. He is survived by his three children Gordon, Gretchen and Robert (daughter-in-law Lei Leng, son-in-law Stuart) and his Grandchildren Spencer and Hannah, and by his loving partner of many years Geraldine Glattstein. He loved Vancouver and his projects, like Granville Island and Habitat Forum 1976, are poignant totems of that passion. His children will always remember a lively home with interesting guests and exploring the west coast in a '56 Mercury. His grandchildren will remember his paper cones filled with sweets. A gathering to celebrate his life is scheduled for Sunday, May 5, 2013 at the Granville Island Hotel between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Alan, you fellow Aquarian, are the quirky, thinkee, spark that embodies the left coast ethos. I met you the same night that Geraldine did. It was a good, long run. Enjoy the unbounded.

Many of us in this community would not be who we are without his encouragement and enthusiasm. I think of him every time I see the Lions Gate Bridge light up.

Alan - or Buddy as he was known back then when we were in elementary school together - was a mentor and inspiration and a great friend to me after we met when I was in grade 5 and he was in grade 7. He continued to be that for me and many more people - he will be with me always in my heart and mind. Milton Orris

A fond goodbye to you, Al, with thanks for your endless encouragement and for all the many outrageously successful and frankly improbable things you managed to do for Vancouver and this province. You have inspired so many of us. Thinking of you Geraldine, Gordon and Lei Leng and the rest of Al's family.

Farewell and journey well Alan, you were an inspiration to many, you had a great mind and heart....but mostly I loved you for making our friend Geraldine happy for so many, many years. The world was made better with you in it and that is what most of us hope for. Adieu.
