Harrison Berlin Obituary

BERLIN Harrison Samuel Berlin, born May 31, 1919, in Chicago, Illinois entered into eternal rest and peace on September 22, 2010, at Sunrise on the Scioto in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Berlin, known fondly as "Uncle Bud" by family and "Harry" to friends, was a veteran of World War II, a professional engineer, a pianist whose talent delighted his listeners, and, most of all, a beloved husband and father. Mr. Berlin was the third child of Harry Samuel Berlin and Martha Louise Miles Berlin. A near lifelong resident of Upper Arlington, he graduated in 1937 from Upper Arlington High School. In 1943, he earned a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from The Ohio State University. He completed training as an aircraft maintenance engineering officer at the Army Air Forces Technical School at Yale University in 1944. He served in the Eighth Army Air Force where he supervised the maintenance of B-17's flying out of Foggia, Italy. Foreshadowing a future hobby, Mr. Berlin also served as an Army Air Force photographic officer, documenting the aftermath of the war. He ended active duty in 1946 and was honorably discharged from the Air Force Reserve in 1955. After the war, Mr. Berlin began a nearly five decade career as a registered professional engineer for a number of manufacturing companies. He was the Chief Industrial Engineer for National Screw & Manufacturing in Cleveland, Ohio, before entering public service in 1964 as the Industrial Engineer for the Ohio Department of Mental Hygiene and Correction, later the Department of Mental Hygiene. Mr. Berlin retired from the State of Ohio in 1991 and remained active in the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers. On February 24, 1951, Harry married Nancy Joan Rickett of Upper Arlington. The marriage produced two sons, Robert Samuel and Michael Albert. Mrs. Berlin survives and resides in Columbus. Mr. Berlin is also survived by Robert, his wife Sharon, and lives in Columbia, MO, and Michael, his wife Carolyn, and lives in Huntington, WV. His grandchildren are Harrison (Boise, Idaho), Elizabeth (Atlanta), and Robert "Hank" (Huntington). Also surviving are Bud's older sister, Martha Louise "Bunny" Wright of Russellville, Arkansas, and Bunny's daughters, Donna Jean Martin (Craig) of Russellville, Martha Louise Larason (Jerry) of Anderson, SC, and Elizabeth Jane "Betsy" Thomas (Jody) of Jefferson City, MO. Mr. Berlin is predeceased by an older sister Jean who died as an infant and his younger brother Roger Berlin. He is survived by sister-in-law, Rhoma Berlin and Roger and Rhoma's children, Brook and Colleen Berlin, Drew and Betsy Berlin, and Gretchen and Russ Randall, all of the Columbus area. Harry Berlin will be remembered as a fun-loving and much loved husband, father, and uncle. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Harry's name to the Alzheimer's Association, 3380 Tremont Rd., Columbus, OH 43221. Friends may call at the DEYO-DAVIS FUNERAL HOME, 1578 W. First Ave., Grandview Hts., Monday 3-5 p.m. where a memorial service will follow at 5 p.m. Rev. G. A. Haubrich officiating. Private interment. Harry and Nancy were long time friends of mine. He took photos at Don and my wedding. He will always be remembered for his kindness and caring. I am happy his long illness has come to an end and I look forward to seeing him in heaven. Jackie Hardy

Harry was always one of my favorite members of the local chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. We could count on Harry's presence at monthly meetings and special events. He served both his profession and his state with his professionalism and dedication. As former Chair of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering I am proud to have known Harry as a journeyman IE, a loyal alumnus, and a good friend.
