Kenneth Shauer Obituary

Shauer, Kenneth
Kenneth Melville Shauer, former Westport resident for 53 years, died May 31, 2013, at his residence in Adamstown, MD, where he had recently moved to be near family. He was 88. Born July 2, 1924, in Manhattan, NY, he was the only child of Paramount Pictures executive Melville A. Shauer and his first wife, Miriam Brady Shauer.
Mr. Shauer grew up in both California and New York. He was a graduate of Pelham Memorial High School in Pelham, NY, and received a B.S. in Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA, and an M.B.A. from the NYU Graduate School of Business Administration in New York City. Mr. Shauer served in the Navy V-12 Unit at Cal Tech during World War II and was honorably discharged as Lieutenant Junior Grade. He worked as a marine engineer, designing the engine rooms of large ships for George G. Sharp, Inc., Naval Architects and Marine Engineers in New York City. His more than thirty years with the company included the positions of Chief Marine Engineer as well as the corporate positions of Secretary, Treasurer, and Senior Vice-President of the firm. After retirement from ship building, he worked in the Westport offices of investment firm John W. Henry & Company.
Partially raised by an uncle, small boat designer William F. Crosby, Mr. Shauer developed an early interest in one-design sailboat racing, which continued throughout his life. As a young man he raced nationally in Snipe class sailboats. In Westport, he was active in the Lightning and Cruising Class fleets of the Cedar Point Yacht Club, where he also served at various times as fleet captain and chairman of the junior racing program.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sarah, his daughter Cynthia Langstaff, and four grandchildren. Services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association at http://www.lung.org/donate/memorial-honor-gifts.
