Donald Dorshimer Obituary

DORSHIMER, DONALD Donald Robert Dorshimer, age 56, of Rockford, passed away October 5, 2013. Don was a former Florida native and a well-known concert promoter whose career spanned several decades. He fundamentally changed the entertainment and music industry in West Michigan with his skillful booking and promotion of national-level artists in the area. All major American talent agencies know of a place called Grand Rapids, MI because Don Dorshimer made sure they did. He helped found the Val-Du-Lakes outdoor concert venue, and then worked for Belkin Productions followed by Clear Channel Entertainment. While operating Club Eastbrook, he also produced shows at The State Theater in Kalamazoo, The Van Andel Arena and other venues around the state. More recently, as owner of The Orbit Room, he continued to bring in top-tier talent and would consistently sell out shows with the best current acts, but he also had an uncanny eye for picking tomorrow's emerging artists. He is survived by his daughter, Natalie and her fiance, George Zlotchenko; his son, Nicholas Dorshimer; his parents, Donald and Joyce Dorshimer; sister, Valery; and nephew, Logan. He will be remembered as a proud father, a devoted son, a loving brother, a tenacious businessman and a loyal friend. He loved Harley-Davidson motorcycles, football, aspiring musicians, sports cars, the Florida State Seminoles, fishing, rock n' roll, rare coins and bar-b-q, but mostly...he loved his children. The family will greet relatives and friends for a memorial and celebration of Don's life on Friday, October 11, at 5 PM at The Orbit Room (2525 Lake Eastbrook Blvd. SE) The Pederson Funeral Home www.pedersonfuneralhome.com

Very sad to here of the passing of my good friend Don. Althought I hadn't seen him in many years, it is no surprise that "Double D" as I called him was a great success. My sincere condolences to the Dorshimer family.

My prayers to the family. This came as such a shock. He was so young! For years & from a distance I sent him photos of bands when asked, from venues in Detroit (Harpos, IRock) and Toledo area and took his existence for granted. I'm sorry that I did. The music industry will feel a void to be sure. I will miss his friendship & expertise.

Don was the West Michigan answer to Bill Graham. He was fierce and friendly at the same time, and whether you agreed with him or not you always knew that at the end of the day what mattered to Donny was the music, and the show.
He was a good boss and a good friend who took the time to teach me as I came up working for him. Many of the lessons I learned working for Don still serve true to me today. He will be missed.

One of a kind. When his name was spoken in a group of people, there would be a slight pause, everyone would look at each other and smile...DON DORSHIMER! We all have our favorite stories about Don. But for me, it wasn't just one or two stories. There was a story EVERY time I would see him! My memory will be the collection as a whole of all of my encounters with Don. The broad understanding of what encompasses the name DON DORSHIMER. He always showed a genuine interest in my children and always spoke of love about his own children and family. A big-hearted guy, he will be missed.

Alway a pleasure to see Don. Especially when he had a new coin. He was so proud and would tell us all about it, grinning from ear to ear. He was so proud of his kids, too. When I would ask how they were, he could go on and on about their accomplishment. Don you will be greatly missed. I feel blessed to have known you.
