Lloyd Grames Obituary

WELLSVILLE - Lloyd D. Grames, 94, of Wellsville, N.Y., and Rushford Lake, N.Y., died on Wednesday (Dec. 18, 2013), at the home of his daughter in Ashville, N.Y.

Lloyd was born on June 12, 1919, in Wellsville and lived in Wellsville and at Rushford Lake throughout his life. He was the son of the late Lawrence R. Grames, Sr. and Beulah Beckwith Grames. On Dec. 12, 1942, at the Christian Temple in Wellsville, he married Ethel R. Heist, with whom he shared 71 years of marriage and who died on Feb. 26, 2014, surviving him by two months.
Lloyd is survived by a daughter, Karen (David) Carlson of Ashville, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Heather Chopra (Mark) Riolo of Lakewood, N.Y.; a grandson, Brent D. Carlson of Columbus, Ohio; a great-grandson, Laken Chopra of Lakewood, N.Y.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Lloyd was predeceased by two infant sons; three sisters, Helen Richards, Hortense Arnold, and Doris Grames; and a brother, Lawrence R. Grames, Jr.

Lloyd graduated from Wellsville High School and attended the University of Missouri. He was a World War II veteran who entered the United States Army in December 1940. In December 1945, he was honorably discharged after serving as a Sergeant in the 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Division. Lloyd was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge as well as the Asiatic - Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 stars for his service in New Guinea, Luzon Island and the Southern Philippine Islands. He was also awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy at Mindoro, Romblon and Mindanao in the Philippine Islands.

Lloyd was employed by the CE Air Preheater Corporation (Alstom) in Wellsville where he worked in the engineering and sales department until his retirement. He was a professional engineer with licenses in both New York state and Pennsylvania and was credited with several patents and technical papers for product improvements.

He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a life member of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers and the American Society of Professional Engineers. In addition, he was a member of Post 702 of the American Legion, a member of the Christian Temple Church and served 10 years on the Board of Managers of Jones Memorial Hospital. In 1988, Lloyd was a patient at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, where he participated in a 2-year pilot study of a new medication for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He enjoyed walking, swimming, boating, golfing, woodworking, researching genealogy, working crossword puzzles and using the computer.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service for Lloyd and his wife, Ethel, will be held at the Mulholland - Crowell Funeral Home, 296 N. Main St., Wellsville on Friday (May 16, 2014) at 11 a.m. Pastor Ralph Wagner of the Christian Temple and First Congregational Church will be officiating. Lloyd's service will include military honors. A private committal for family will be after the service at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville. The Lind Funeral Home of Jamestown was in charge of the cremation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jones Memorial Hospital – 191 N. Main St., Wellsville, NY 14895 or to the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, Elm and Carlton Streets, Buffalo, NY 14263.
