Hello, Dora. I think of you often since the awful tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, and of the time we had together back in West LA when you were still a doctoral student at UCLA. We will remember you always. Rest in peace.

Dora Menchaca was my younger sister's friend and classmate in elementary school in San Antonio. I remember Dora from one of my sister's backyard parties. She was memorable for several reasons: beauty and charm were just two. Years later Dora and I were students at Notre Dame at the same time. I was a few years ahead but we knew each other from our San Antonio connection. She was, as before, an uncommonly nice human being, with a ready smile that conveyed intelligence and self-confidence. I offer my sympathy to those who knew her well and I hope she will always be a source of inspiration for those who work for a better world.

Today is the 15th anniversary. In commemoration the Kingstree, SC Lions Club stood at the 4 corners of Main Street and held American flags with banners. The banners each bore the name of a person lost on 9-11. It was my honor to hold the flag for Dora. Praying for your family and friends this day and thanking God for sharing you and allowing you to have been a blessing to so many. You will not be forgotten.

This anniversary every year my thoughts are alway with you, Earl, Imani and Jaryd. So many lost life on that awful day but you and your whole family always struck me as having such a love for each other and such a lust for life that I struggled with how could such a positiveperson could be taken from us. You flashed through my life yet you had a huge impact. You always smiled and asked how you could help. I recall you and Earl were always the last to leave helping me stack chairs and laughing about some of the girls basketball antics of the day. Maybe it was because Imani and Lara were the same age and friends and maybe it's because I was blessed with a little boy named Josh who is the same age as Jaryd... You were just a working Mom like me trying to get home to your husband and kids... your loss just feels so damn personal! Rest in peace...

I did a "Never Forget" 5k today in Lancaster, PA. At the run, along with our runner's bib and memorial shirt, we received a name tag of someone who died in the events on 9/11. I chose Dora's tag and ran for her and for her loved ones, thinking of her the whole time. The run was a beautiful tribute and funds raised went to the 911 Foundation. Thinking of Dora and her loved ones today.

To Dora's dear family,
All these years later, I still remember the last time I spoke with this lovely friend. We were walking on the Amgen campus past "Camp Amgen" (the child day care center), and she told me she had won the contest for naming it. She was so proud of that because she loved her own children so much. What a privilege to have known her. She's no doubt in "Camp Heaven," now. I imagine Jesus greeting her with arms outstretched. You are a bright light, Dora, who still shines in our hearts.

My sister taught her brother Joe in the 7th grade here in San Antonio, I cherish the memories of the visits to their home. Dora was a great person as were her parents and her brother. I remember hearing she was a victim during 9/11 and experiencing the sadness and pain of her loss. May GOD BLESS the Menchaca family, her husband and son in JESUS NAME.

I remember Dora as Lisa does, with long flowing black hair and a shy smile which seemed so genuine and quick. May all of you to whom her love was extended, her family and friends, and who received so much from her be comforted by the loveliness of her memory.

I was a classmate of Dora's at Notre Dame. I live in Maryland about an hour from the Pentagon. Today, for the first time, I went to the Pentagon Memorial to see Dora's bench. I took pictures to share with the women in our graduating class of 1977. I wish her family well.

I worked with Dora briefly in the 90's. What a genuine and strong role model she was. I pray her family knows of the fine example she made for so many of us. On this day, 9/11/09 my first thoughts go to her and her family. God bless you all.

I went to Notre Dame with Dora. I treasure a photograph of about eight of us, female grads in our caps and gowns, doing a kick line for the camera. Dora is grinning. Her long dark hair flows with hope, celebration, and freedom. I fished that photo out from an old box of college scraps when the towers fell and I learned of Dora's death. I will always honor her memory, especially today. My sympathies to her family.

Dora was one of my roommates for 2 years at Notre Dame. She was the voice of reason that kept the other 3 of us sane. She had such an ability to make us laugh. I'll never forget the night that Camille ate the can of jalopeno peppers that Dora's parents sent in a care package. Oh, we laughed!

Dora and I were in the same graduating class (1973) at Providence High School in San Antonio, Texas. We were friends who lost touch after graduation. It was painful enough to have lost two friends from National Geographic on the doomed plane that flew into the Pentagon, but to learn a couple days later that Dora was on that flight as well was almost more than I could bear. I regret that we didn't keep in touch, but I knew nothing of the beauty that Dora exhibited back then would ever change. She was warm, witty, funny, and a brilliant student who mastered French when most of us were stumbling through our high school foreign language courses. Dora was a gift to us all, and I will miss her always.

Dora was one of my classmates at Providence High School, class of '73. Although we weren't close friends, since ours was a small class, we all knew one another pretty well. Dora stood out not only for her intelligence but her sense of fun. In later years, I remember she was willing to come back and talk to the students on Career Day whenever possible and share her experiences. Our class will have a 30-year reunion this year, and although Dora is the only member missing, she will be there in spirit, and in the best of memories. She was unafraid to live her life well, and for that she will be remembered as exceptional among those who knew her.

I just want to take the time (although late) to tell everyone who comes across this page what an amazing woman Dora was. I've grown up with Imani, over the past five years, and I've come to know Dora as a wonderfully caring and supporting mother to both of her children (Imani and Jaryd). She was a strong supporter at all of our soccer games, and I know first hand how close of a relationship she maintained with her daughter. It is truly a tragedy that her children must learn to live without her, and Dora and her family will always have a place in my heart.

Sept. 11, 2002 is quickly approaching, and I find myself frequently think of Dora and her family. I did not know Dora personaly; I am a friend of her brother John. My heart still goes out her family. Though I was not directly affected by the devastation I was indirectly affected. I know what a time of sadness and grief I have gone through, I just can't imagine what Dora's family has had to deal with. I pray for Dorsey, Imani and Jaryd frequently. My prayer is that the grace of God and his peace continue to carry them through the rough times.

Several months ago I went to the Pentagon site and saw some of the moving memorials left there by family and friends. I was particularly moved by a personal memorial left there for Dora, and I will always remember her when I think about my visit to the Pentagon that day. I just wanted to send my prayers to her family in their time of loss....

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
