Vicki Yancey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2001.
Vicki Yancey was on her way to Reno for a business conference but hadn't planned to be on Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon on Tuesday.

Yancey, a former naval electronics technician, worked for a defense contracting company and had planned to leave Washington earlier, but ticketing problems delayed her departure, her husband, David, told the Washington Post. She called her husband 10 minutes before the flight boarded, to tell him that she got a seat on the plane.

Vicki Yancey, 43, mom who loved politics Vicki Costanzo Yancey loved politics; it says so on her Web site. And she loved her family, figure skating, her four cats and making a difference.

Mrs. Yancey, 43, who grew up in New Jersey, was a typical middle-class mother of two, according to her husband, David -- but a mom who testified before the Senate Finance Committee, who once gave CNN's "Quote of the Day" and who was involved in activities from her daughters' schools to national politics.

An electronics technician and Navy veteran who lived in Springfield, Va., she died on Sept. 11 when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon.

"I think she was the epitome of a middle-class woman who loved her kids, loved politics and loved life," David Yancey said. "She cared for all human beings."

Mrs. Yancey's life took her from New Jersey to Hawaii -- where she met and married her husband -- to Capitol Hill.

Her Senate appearance, which she called on her Web site "the most interesting thing I have ever done," came in 1991 after she wrote to the Washington Post lamenting the loss of the one-income family.

She was asked to speak at a tax reform hearing about the struggles of the middle-class family. She delivered the CNN "Quote of the Day," led the Headline News, and was profiled by CNN and PBS.

Her quote: "Diving deeply into debt in our middle age is a very unappealing possibility."

"She referred to that as her 15 minutes of fame," her husband said.

She created her own Web site after that, filling it with photos and commentary on her many passions: daughters Michelle, 18, and Carolyn, 15; figure skating, which she loved to watch; travel, and politics.

"She was a good American citizen," said her father, Salvatore Costanzo of Hamilton Township.

Born in Kearny, Mrs. Yancey lived there until age 15, when her family moved to Hillsborough. She graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1974.

At 22, she joined the Navy, becoming an electronics technician. She served for six years, four at Pearl Harbor. She and her husband married in Honolulu, where their first daughter was born.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Yancey worked as a Department of Defense contractor with Vrendenburg Co. in Washington, D.C. She was en route to a conference in Reno, Nev. She was supposed to take an earlier flight but had to switch because of ticketing problems.

"It breaks my heart that she left before any of us got up. We said our goodbyes the night before," her husband said. Their last conversation was before takeoff, when they said "I love you," and he wished her a safe trip.

One thing David Yancey said his wife would not want now is for her death to cause any abuse to Arab-Americans.

"That's not how she lived her life and that's not what she wants," he said.

In addition to her husband, daughters and father, Mrs. Yancey is survived by a sister, Gloria Snekszer of Acworth, Ga.; three brothers, Ronald of Edison, Raymond and Richard, both of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services with military honors were held at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church in Springfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pentagon Relief Fund.

I never met Vicki, or simply Yancey, as we knew her on the Time Politics message board, but I always enjoyed her posts. She was funny and smart and wanted only the best for our country.

Vicki, 16 years have passed since that fateful day. I am still working, except now I am with the Marine Corps in Quantico; the commute to the Navy Yard was to much. Do hope your Husband & Children are fine...many of us miss you!

I visited here today, I'm from CA, my nephew works here. I sat in the shade because it was very warm. I sat with Vickey Yancey. I looked up her name to see her story. I am very sorry for your loss, may the light of this candle shine in her memory.

At the fifteen year anniversary of this tragic day, I still hold dear my memory of Vicki and her cheerful bubbly smile. She was the heart of our Navy mine warfare team and her loss left a hole in our team. My prayers continue for her family as I picture her still watching over them. Always remember, always be inspired to build up the broken, lift up the downtrodden, as our Savior Jesus Christ showed us.

As the father of two daughters, I am always touched when I read about girls who lose a parent too early in life. I pray today for Vicki's family and for her friends. Time has marched on, but we will never forget that horrible day when so many innocent lives were lost in such a horrible act. May God bless each of you in a special way as we honor Vicki's legacy by being very active in bettering this world. With much love from Texas,

September 11, 2014

In the beginning of 2014, I took a trip with my family to the 9/11 Memorial to show my out of state relative the heart of NYC. While I personally did not have a direct family connection to any of the names so delicately inscribed into the memorial, I connect in the ways of my friends and acquaintances who did lose a loved one on that day.
Before I had entered school that day, September 11th was always just the day before my birthday. But we can all remember exactly where we were on that day in 2001. I was with my 5th grade class sitting in the library. Our library teacher had the television on while we sat on the floor, not having any idea what we were watching. Our teachers then described, as gently as they could, what had happened as my our parents came and scooped us from class one by one.
I share my story and remembrance because you have shared yours. When I was at the memorial earlier this year, I snapped some quick iPhone photos. We took some of ourselves with the scenery behind and we took some of the names and breathtaking view into the deep continually flowing fountain. Where we happened to be standing there was a white rose with its short stem secured into one of the divots of a name. The rose caught my attention and i made it a point to include it in my iPhone photos that would most likely only make their debut on Facebook or Instagram.
Today, I woke up to a newsfeed full of photos and decided to pull out the photos I had taken that day and post one in remembrance. I posted the photo and then it occurred to me to look back and read the names again. Vicki Yancey. I googled her. A jersey girl like myself, a hardworking and “epitome of a middle-class woman who loved her kids,” like my mother. I thought, why not share the photo I posted today with the family of the brilliant, inspiring woman who lost her life on such a tragic day. I wanted you to know that she is not forgotten. I am touched by her story and by the genuine mark she seems to have made in this world. As I read through the Star Ledger article about her, I was impressed and humbled, line by line. And as I read further through articles and tributes, I happened to read of another kind heart who happened to connect with Vicki as they passed her name at another memorial, with what seems to be another white rose in the area of Vicki's bench. While some could say this is a coincidence, I see this as a mark that Vicki has made even 13 years later. Vicki, you caught my attention and it has been my pleasure to read your story. I share my photo with you with the hopes that you look at it and read my story. Vicki is remembered and is in my thoughts today.

I can't believe it's been 10 years. Vicky was my husband's cousin, and though I only met her a few times, she was the coolest, smartest lady, and I was very priveledged to have had a few long, inspiring chats with her. I wish the family all kept in touch after her funeral. We see her dad now and then, and he's also the easiest, nicest guy to talk to. He's so proud of you, Vicki. We all are. All my love to David & the girls, Sarah

On the two year anniversary of 9/11, I couldn't help but think of your mom, Carolyn. Nothing like this has ever happened to me, but because I knew you, I felt more anger in me because it happened to you, someone I didn't know very well but nonetheless I felt pain in my heart. There are no words anyone can say about the loss of a persons life that will make it all better. All I can say is God Bless your family and all the families of the victims of 9-11. Your mom, Vicki, will always be in my prayers.

God Bless,

What a terrible thing. They sounded so thrilled to have been to America, where they were indeed proud parents. At least they got to see America, and the great life their daughter has made for herself. I'm sure that they weren't just together in person, they were gushing from ear to ear, with the joy this trip brought them.

I just recently found out about the loss of Vicki in the plane crash and I am deeply sorrowed by her loss. It is hard to understand how such things can happen, but even harder to understand when it is someone you know. To the Family of Vicki Yancey I want to send my condolences. It has been several months now and the pain of this tragedy is still with us. I am sure that this is still the case with the families that have suffered losses on 911. I just wanted to breifly send some encouraging words to some that are sorrowing. God's word the Bible says that there will be no more pain or sorrowing nor dying. We can read about this in the Bible at Revelation 21:1-5. Once again, I would like to say how sorry I am about the death of your dear Vicki.

Please take comfort from the scriptures and each other.
