Captain Walter Hynes

Captain Walter Hynes

Walter Hynes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 16, 2001.
Handyman and Lawyer
Capt. Walter Hynes was the person his extended family relied on for everything. If you needed your plumbing fixed or a room painted, Walter would do it. He would change your tire. He was the family lawyer. He even met his wife while lending a hand: he was helping another firefighter, Richard Fanning, move into a new house and was introduced to Mr. Fanning's sister.

Captain of Ladder Company 13 at 85th Street and Lexington Avenue, Walter lived in Belle Harbor, Queens, with his wife, Veronica, and their three daughters. He had worked as a firefighter in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and put himself through law school at St. John's University at night.

"He had no free time," a family member said yesterday, "because he was always doing for everyone else."

I just watched a show about you and other victims/survivor on the history channel and I knew I just had to leave a message. May you rest in eternal peace and may god bless you always. My deepest condolences are with you and your family. From what I read and heard you were a wonderful man and the world is a better place because you were in it. Bless you and your family always.

My husband is a firefighter in the KC area and has participated in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb the last 2 years (he is climbing today). He has walked for Captain Hynes the last 2 years. We have read about him and what a great man he was. We thank him for his service and my husband, Jared Steinhauser is honored to climb for him.

I ended up choosing this man for my 9/11 victims.. and ended up kinda finding my hero. everything I've read about him, and all the little things he stood for.. it just erks me that he was taken from his family and friends so soon, in such a tragic way. My best wishes go out to his wife and daughters.

While doing some internet surfing I ran across a tribute to Captain Hynes. I just wanted to add my condolences to his family, and say that 10+ years we remember, and will forever be grateful for his sacrifice. God bless you all.

I was reading some of the comments put here for Wally from complete strangers. I just wanted to let all of you out there know that this was such a nice guy..with the biggest smile and a really good heart. I worked with him for a few years..and he worked so hard! I can't say enough about him, I always liked him..and think of him fondly. He is missed and thought of by so many...

Walter, there is some comfort knowing your Mother is with you now but the hole in our hearts for both of you is deep. Laying her to rest was painful but knowing she would join you eased the pain a bit. We think of you and pray for you often - you will not be forgotten - love, Jini

To the family of Walter Hynes,
I didn't have the privilege of knowing your Husband, Father, Son, but I saw a programme featuring him on Channel 4 in the U.K today, and when I searched him afterwards I noticed that we share the same birthday. This year and every other year afterwards on my birthday I am going to take a moment to remember this wonderful, brave man. God Bless your family.

I did not know Capt Hynes but a close friend of mine was a friend of his. He gave me a Capt Walter Hynes braclet that I wear in his honor. I have been on the job for 20 yrs now, and I will remember all of my fallen brothers, a place in my heart as firefighters all have and feel the pain of a lost brother. God Bless Walt and all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. FDNL 1522

I have met people like Captain Hynes, but never someone so giving as to make the ultimate sacrifice. As a Catholic priest, I am inspired by the way he lived and gave his life. He and his family will have a daily place in my prayers.

Walter it's your 5th Anniversary in Heaven and life is still moving on. Many things have changed and some have remained the same. I can report to you that we have not forgotten all those that sacrificed everything on 9/11/01. The services here in Kennesaw, Ga. were beautiful. Imagine a field of flags. One for each person lost on 9/11/01. I met up with two retired FDNY at the service. Both knew and /or worked with you and have moved to Georgia with their families since 9/11. A chance meeting here in Atlanta and so far away from home. I justed wanted you to know that we have not and will never forget you. Love, Lori

I have worn with pride, the tribute bracelet with Capt. Hynes name on it. I keep it on my dresser in plain sight at all times, except for September 11th of every year, when I put it on, and wear it for the day. My family have all had firefighters down through the years. My brother is a firefighter with the Bangor Maine F.D., and is now also a Paramedic I graduate. Our whole family just attended his graduation. My brother was one of the thousands of firefighters from all over the country who traveled to New York to pay their respects to the members of the FDNY, what seems like now just yesterday...My brother is also the one who is always busy lending a hand. He is a firefighter, paramedic, carpenter, plumber, and anything else he can be to help lend a hand. God Bless you all, and keep you safe. Suzi Fleming Leeman

Hi... I just wanted to say Hi.... I have gotten to know your daughter Caitlin during my recent work at Kearney... She is a wonderful girl.. and I thought you might like to know that she is blossoming... she misses you terribly.. but says nothing.. you can see it on her face..I am so happy that she is involved in the school production of Oklahoma... she is a terrific dancer.. and loves being onstage..... I know you will be watching her... I put her front and center in one of the dance numbers so that you could see her clearly!! I'll make sure to let her know that you are watching on opening night ... as well as every night! I only wish that you could be there in body as well as in spirit....I would love to meet you.... but instead I will share a moment with your daughter to welcome your spirit into the theatre... see you on opening night! I went to the Bishop Kearney website and came across names of those in our community who had died on Sept. 11. Unfortunately, the name of one of my, forgive me for saying, old gym teacher's brother was on that list. I feel for you and your family every single day. I've prayed and will continue praying for all of you forever. That day has made a huge impact on my life. I now realize to live life to our fullest, to love it and appreciate it. Ms. Hynes- your brother was a true hero, no doubt. Risking his life to save others without a second thought. My husband is a police officer and does the same nearly every day. God chooses very special people to protect us and he has taken one to be an angel to protect us forever. My deepest sympathty to you and your family. It's been 2 years and he is and will always be remembered. God bless.

To The Family of Walter Hynes,

I have heard many wonderful stories of Walter from his family and friends. He is truly loved and missed. I wish you all the best and hope that your memories provide comfort (as they do our family). Too many strong and courageous men were lost on 9/11. My only solace is that our Angels in heaven are keeping watch over us.

I have only good memories of the times that Wally and I spent together at McClancy H.S. and was deeply shocked when I learned in the McClancy alumni newsletter of his death stemming from his bravery on 9-11-01. In February 2003 I will directing "The Guys" the play about a FDNY Fire Captain for Grosse Pointe Theatre and will dedicate that performance in Wally's memory. My heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to his family. I am proud to have known Wally and will keep him in my heart.

The 4th of July. A day to celebrate our nations freedom and to cherish all that that means. My brother was a hero on 911 and his loss is heart breaking to his family and friends. Nothing will ever be the same for us. Each day is clouded by a haze of tears. I can only hope that 911 remains vivid in the minds of all Americans and not just for those of us who cary the burning scars of our personal loss. We can never let it recede to a place of complacency. Please Remember. To the Hynes family,

I am a catholic school teacher in Brooklyn who attended the National Catholic Educators Conference in Atlantic City in the beginning of April. While attending a conference on promoting peace in our classrooms, the presenter had a prayer service which was a memorial to all those wonderful people we had lost on 9/11. During this prayer servicewe all recieved a name of some who perished on that day. I received the name of Capt. Walter Hynes. We were ask to place the card in a special place and to pray for that person and their family. Capt. Hynes' name hangs in a place of prominance in my third grade class and we pray for Walter, his family and friends everyday. He will never be forgotten.

Also, as a fireman's sister I wanted to express my sympathies to all of you who had the pleasure of knowing and loving one of NYC bravest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A friend of mine from college, David Laurance, signed your guest book with a message about a good deed replacement project he has started in honor of Walter and other victims of 9-11. I am the person who has volunteered in honor of Walter.

I had been thinking about volunteering for Big Brothers / Big Sisters for years but when I heard about this project I finally volunteered. I have started a relationship with a little boy named Joey. He seems like a wonderful little boy, very intelligent and interested. He had been abused by a father that is no longer part of the family.

Although Walter is gone his goodness continues to widen. If you would like updates on how Joey is doing please let me know.

To Capt. Hynes family,

I knew Walter, though I always called him Capt Hynes, through my brother Martin McWilliams. They worked together in E22/L13. Martin and a few other guys were working on his house, and I used to call all the time (for nothing!). Every time I went by the firehouse, Walter would give me a good ribbing over that. He was a very kind man, and I will always remember his smile. You are in my and my family's prayers...Very Sincerely,

To Peggy, Pat and To Walter's Wife and Family, I have wanted to contact you, since the tragedy. When I saw that Walter was one of the victims, my heart broke. Peggy and Patty (what everyone called you when we were kids) I do hope that you remember me. Patty and I went to Blessed Sacrament together, up until you moved out to Belle Harbor, in the Rockaways. I lived on 34th Road, Jackson Heights, and you lived up the hill from me and my family. From the bottom of my heart, I have prayed for Walter each and every day. I remember him as if it was only yesterday. We were only kids at the time, but Walter and Patty Hynes were two kids I never forgot. Many years have passed, our lives went on to different directions, but memories have remained. My deepest prayers and condolences to you, Pat and Walter's wife and children. You are all in my heart. I had the great pleasure and privilege to have worked with Walter Hynes in the 80's during his years as a New York City Fire Marshal. Although we remained good friends, our paths did not cross as frequently as we would have liked. Nonetheless, I can tell you that Walter was a loyal friend, a superior firefighter, a true leader of men, the first to volunteer his time or efforts and a devoted father and family man. He was one of the greatest guys you could ever met. Walter Hynes was a very special individual who will be sorely missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Walter was one of 343 NYC Fire Department members who perished on 9/11/01 while doing their job saving lives. My heart grieves for all of their families and the thousands of other lives lost in the World Trade Center. May their memory live on forever.

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Walter. We thank him for dedicating his life to helping others as a firefighter and a jack of all trades. Such dedication comes with a warm and caring heart. May Walter's courage, life and love live on in those who love him. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Walter was a "hero" from the time he lost his dad at the age of nine and he had to grow up very quickly. I know he is looking down on his wife and three girls, his Mother and sister, still loving them, still caring for them, still ready to tease them. Walter always had a twinkle in his eye - perhaps he knew he was meant for something bigger and better far sooner than any of us could imagine. "May God hold you in the palm of his hand until we meet again" ...

Walter Hynes was a person I looked upon with the highest regard. He did not become a hero on 9.11.01 he has always been a hero. He was a very unselfish, caring individual. I wish I could be half the person he was. God Bless Walter, his family, and friends. God Bless America.

God hath not promiced skies always blue, flower-strewn pathways all our lives through. God hath not promiced sun without rain, jou without sorrow, peace without pain.God hath not promiced we shall not know toil and temtations, trouble and woe.He hath not told us we shall not bear many a burden many a care. But god hath promiced strength for the day, rest for the laborer, light for the way, grace for the trials, help from above, unfailing sympathy, undying love. Please keep your faith and know many others care. I am a friend of Noreen Donegan and felt a great need to send you my deepest condolences.

i am running a project whereby people can do good deeds in the name of a victim of the tragedy. a participant has agreed to do a good deed to replace one of the many that Walter surely would have done.
