Dominick Pezzulo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 16, 2001.
The Unusual Was Typi
Two kids from the Bronx just out of high school on their first date: Let's take the train to Manhattan and walk around, they say. Approaching a fountain, he's afraid she's not paying attention. He steps in front to block her, and falls right in. "We had to ride home with his brand-new sneakers squeaking," recalls Jeanette Pezzulo, with a laugh. And after that, she says, there was no way she could avoid marrying Dominick Pezzulo.

It happened at the World Trade Center.

Through the succeeding 18 years, Mr. Pezzulo fixed airplanes for T.W.A., taught shop at Herbert Lehman High School, restored a Porsche 944 (it is on hold for 7-year-old Dominick Jr.), pumped iron regularly, went on dinner cruises and just slipped under the 35-year-old age limit for the Port Authority police force.

Officer Pezzulo, who lived in the Bronx, was assigned to the bus station. "He knew everybody in there, from the maintenance guys to the elevator operators to the store owners," said Officer Michael G. Placido, a close friend. On Sept. 11, he commandeered a bus with some other officers, and died under the first tower collapse while digging out a fellow officer. "I would say that's typical," said Frank Augello, a boyhood friend.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on December 15, 2001.

When they heard about the attack on the two buildings, Dominick Pezzulo and other Port Authority officers at a Midtown bus terminal commandeered a New York City bus to get downtown, said Gus Danese, president of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association.

Pezzulo, 36, arrived at the scene before either building collapsed and tried to rescue Sgt. John McLoughlin and Officer William Jimeo of the Port Authority police, who were trapped in the rubble from the initial explosions, Danese said.

While Pezzulo was trying to rescue the officers, the south tower collapsed, killing him, Danese said.

"The two people he attempted to take out of the rubble survived. They are currently in Bellvue Hospital," Danese said.

"When they did remove Officer Pezzulo's body, one of the rescue workers wrapped him in an American flag," Danese said. The flag was given to Pezzulo's wife, Jeanette.

It took me 11 years to find this page and let you know you've been in my thoughts and prayers all this time. I think how great you guys were to double on my 1st date with Joe all those years ago, when he was so out of his mind nervous that he poured his coffee on his arm on City Island! You guys were young, fun and beautiful together and that's the way I'll always remember you ... Love Cyndy

I lived across the street from Mimmo many years ago. Seddon Street was a great place to grow up and learn about friendship. I had some great friends living there. My brother Mike and I often talk about the people we new back then. After traveling around the world, I have made some friends but none like the friends we had back in the Bronx. I was a few years younger than Mimmo, Frankie and those guys, but I can still remember Frank and Mimmo handing out on summer nights around the neighborhood. Mimmo, you're a hero for everything you've done, saving your brothers that day, raising and taking care of you family, teaching those kids at Lehman HS (I still miss that place). I've been a cop for 13 years now. There are three of us that I know of from Seddon St. that are on the job, must have been something in the water. I haven't seen you for over 25 years but I think about the person you became and it makes me proud to have known you. My prayers are with you and your wonderful family.

To the family of Dominick Pezzulo -
I never met Dominick but I want you to know I pray for his family all of the time. In the weeks following 9/11 a local church had the idea of making silver bracelets with the names of each of the 9/11 victims in order to remember them and pray for them. I was honored to receive the bracelet with Dominick's name on it. I never will forget to pray for his family. I am wearing the bracelet right now and am so honored to do so.

It was 1983, the best years of our lives when I joined the college of Aeronautics in Flushing , New York . It was there where I met one of my all time best friends Dominick Pezullo aka Memo. He was 18 & I was 22 years old.

He was in my same aircraft structure class, he sat down next to me and we hit it off right away with total friendship. The rest was history. We began socializing together outside of college, we introduced our girlfriends to each other and they became good friends. We double dated, had lots of laughs and tons of fun. He always had the best sense of humor. We made each other laugh real hard one time in class. We were laughing quietly when the teacher was giving a lecture. This is college mind you, Mr. A was his name, short for a very long Greek name little did he know it was about him. He looked over at us and said, would you like to share your amusement with the class? Of course, we said no so he separated us which we were not happy about. Memo was a huge part of my graduating college other than my parents, whom I owe my life to as they paid for it. Memo assisted me through the lectures and helped me pass my tests. I was able to reciprocate in shop where we had to make projects such as riveting and welding so we helped each other in our own way to get through.

Again, he was a tremendous part of my college years. Especially, with physics which was very complicated for me he was awesome with formulas. We began commuting together to school. Sometimes I would pick him up and he would fall asleep, other times we would be laughing hysterically about a teacher or some other topic that came to mind. It was always a pleasure to be in his company. I asked Memo to be an usher in my wedding. He was honored and all the bridesmaids fought to be his partner because of his good looks, awesome personality and of course his keen sense of humor. Even my parents and sister were crazy about him. He was an exceptional kind of person one who would take the shirt off his back to help you. We were similar in many ways and that’s why we got along so well. I now understand why he passed away the way he did. Helping others was his nature, a true hero at that.

I was indeed very fortunate to meet Memo & wouldn’t have changed any of it for the world. Friends like Memo are truly hard to come by and I have to say he had all the elements an individual should have.

I am now a successful college graduate and an inspector in the world’s finest helicopter Sikorsky Aircraft. I owe an immense amount of accomplishments to Memo. I miss his presence dearly and will keep the memories of our friendship with me always. R.I.P. your friend Andrew Lanne aka Andy.

Dominick, I remember that you worked at TWA airport as a mechanic. I use to accompany my mom, Betty to work at TWA. You would help me with my homework sometimes. I was about 7 years old but I never forget how nice you were and helpful to me. I even would get a little nervous because you were very handsome. :) The last time I saw you was at a "Christmas party" held in TWA and you were holding your two children. You a true hero and you'll will always be missed. Your memory will live in my heart forever.

Birthdays In Heaven

Are there birthdays in Heaven?
Does the angel blow his horn?
Announcing to everybody
That this is the day you were born?

Can the stars be your balloons
And angel food your cake?
Presents wrapped in moonbeams
All the angels helped to make.

Birthdays meant so much to you
They were always a big deal
Birthday presents, lots of friends
And perhaps a special meal.

So we'll whisper a little prayer today
Asking everyone up above
To sing you a Happy Birthday song
And give you all our love.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Dom;
its gonna take me a few to leave this entry through the tears. we met in 1991 when I became a mechanic for T.W.A. we had a blast there. you are still mentioned among us, even after I became maintenance supervisor we remained friends. I still remember the conversation with the Port Authority Investigator and how I told her what A great guy you are. sometimes I think I should have lied to her, but then I would have cheated all the people who knew you as Officer Pezzulo and all the people you helped on 9-11. you are truly A hero to all that know you and you will live forever in our hearts. just by reading the entries before this I know you will never be forgotten. I have since left New York and settled in Texas, and I have the shirt and wear it and will remember you always

Dominick,
I only knew about you since about 2003, when read a list of PAPD officers who had been killed. I picked a few to research, including you. I read stories of your heroism, how you wasted no time to get into the WTC with your team. This past summer, I saw the movie "World Trade Center". I didnt have a clue what the movie was about, except for 2 PAPD officers who were trapped. When I heard your name in the movie the first time, I felt like crying. I knew the movie was true, and I loved how your great patriotism is portrayed. You really cared about your fellow officers and fought for them until the end. Youll never be forgotten in my heart. Thank you for helping protect on that terrible day. One day, I hope to visit your grave so I can pay respects to a truly awesome, unselfish American. I hope Ill get a chance to meet you in heaven. God Bless.

Dear Jeannette,
It's been a very long time since our years at SRA. I remember hanging out with Mimmo as teens, he was such a great person... honest, friendly and always, always had a smile on his face. I'm sorry I didn't sign this book sooner, but I never knew about this. I only learned about this last year when my Tony passed away. I can truly say to you that I know how you feel and what you go through and have to face each and every day. You and your little ones are in my prayers and thoughts. My girls never met Mimmo, but they do know about him and his heroism. They were really young when this tragedy struck, but they watched with me as the towers were hit and eventually collapsed. And they watched as I cried. At that time, I had no idea I had lost a great friend in Mimmo. When I found out, they again watched me cry ... this time the tears were filled with pain. If you have a chance, please contact me. I would love to speak with you. Maybe we can help each other get through some rough times.

your old friend,
Rose Marie (La Magra) Avena
