Gerald Fisher Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2001.
An Eternal Optimist
As one of Booz, Allen & Hamilton's most respected consultants, Gerald P. Fisher never saw the need to dress for success.

"He was a character," said Joyce Doria, a senior vice president who supervised Mr. Fisher at the firm's Mclean, Va., office. "Geep," as friends and co-workers called him, "would sometimes come in with his tie in disarray, or a shirt that just didn't match," Ms. Doria said. "But he stood his ground. He would say, `This is me, this is who I am.' He wanted people to know him for his ideas. He had a very winning way."

A resident of Potomac, Md., Gerald Paul Fisher, 57, grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from San Francisco College. Bearded and burly, he was a jolly character, with a guttural laugh that turned heads when it rang. "He was a very open kind of guy," Ms. Doria said, "an eternal optimist."

At Booz, Allen for 17 years, Mr. Fisher had worked as a manpower specialist, and on Sept. 11 was meeting with Lt. Gen. Timothy J. Maude at the Pentagon..

Mr. Fisher found time to pursue his passion for social work — he held a doctorate in social welfare from the University of Pennsylvania. "People would go to him for counseling," Ms. Doria said. "I guess he never lost the social welfare part of him."

Remembering Gerald on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

September 12, 2021

It's been 20 years since the loss of so many. Geep was the one I knew, from Barton Flats to Berkeley. We navigated the 60's together along with other dear friends. In those days, he was not a professional consultant or college professor. What he was, was a friend. A true friend. His memory lives on with those who knew him. We miss him every day.

Geep, may you rest in peace.

Geep,

Taking a few minutes today to remember the good times, your contributions to our clients, and your humor; all of which still makes me smile. You will not be forgotten!

I read all the memories of those lives you touched. As so well stated by all those before me you were a special gifted man. As you were in later life so we're you growing up. It seems you never changed from our days at Hollywood High School, you were alway a great friend, open to everyone, caring, concerned, and willing to help in any way you could. It seems you never changed as you went thru life. I'm not surprised. I have stopped and thought of you often remembering those early years and the kindness and humor you shared with all your friends. You left us much to soon, but you left a very big footprint in so many lives. Well done Geep.

May we all honor Geep's memory by pursuing our passions, helping mankind, and have an optimistic and humorous approach to life. My thought and prayers go out to his many friends and family today as I pause to remember this tragic day in our country's history. Love from Texas,

There are special teachers in our lives who become more. Mentors. Friends. Magical Dumbledores. It's unusual, if you go to a large university like the University of Texas, to connect with a professor in the same way. But Geep Fisher was special. A clown, full of energy, eager to change the world, whose passion inspired me to learn things about social work policy that I wasn't really interested in at the beginning. He sponsored my undergraduate thesis, gave me a research assistantship, and brightened my way all through grad school. I babysat his children. I lost touch when he left UT, and wondered often what he was up to. I'm sure it was meaningful and touched many lives. Only last year I learned that he died at the Pentagon on 9/11, working on policy to benefit military families. I remember and honor him today, among the many. Peace & healing for his family, friends, colleagues and students.

At my school today, we had a prayer service in which each student received a bracelet with the name of a victim of 9/11. I received Mr. Fisher's name. I may not know you, but I'm sure you are an amazing person and we will never forget you!

If I live forever I will never forget that day. I watched on TV as the towers fell and I cried. I have never felt so devastated in my life. I can't even imagine what it was like to be there. I know I will NEVER FORGET and I don't think any other AMERICAN will.

To Geep's Family,

I'm so sorry to be writing this so long after the date. Geep and I worked together for several years. I had just been hired at Westat when we bid on a job to research the causes of underground mine accidents. Because Geep worked at a firm (HumRRO) that had been involved in this kind of research, we bid with them, which is how I met him.

We did very good work together, but, honestly, I most remember the fun we had doing this work -- Geep was outrageously funny, always a joy to work with, just a delight. I'm sure we worked on other projects together and we always kept in touch for lunch or just to talk. Gosh, I miss him.

Geep was my first manager at Booz | Allen. He was larger than life, but I learned from Geep that no matter how "big" you get there is no need to take yourself too seriously.

On this the 7th anniversary of the attack, I have been thinking of what we all lost that day. Peace.

Geep was an amazing friend, and human being. It's still hard to believe that he's gone - Geep was larger than life. I think of him so often, and am deeply saddened by his absence. I can still hear his voice asking "really?...". What a loss - for all his family & friends, and for all who never had a chance to know him.

G.P. Fisher was my cousin. I hadn't seen him since I was young. He and I were about the same age. It's hard losing a member of the family. It leaves a hole that cannot be filled nor replaced.

I had worked with Geep at Booz Allen and wished I had got to know him better. I learned a great deal more about him during the Memorial Service.

Attache
d are some photos showing Geep's playful nature. The first photo was taken on 15 May 2001 in Heidelberg, Germany. The next three photos were taken 31 May 2001 at the PDI Conference in Dallas, Texas. Geep was having fun with some of the items from the booth. We had joked with Geep that we were going to send them to Joyce Doria so she could see he behaved at the PDI.

Geep was my professor in the mid 1970's while I studied social work at The University of Texas. He was my FAVORITE professor and a wonderful mentor. I have thought of him often over the years. I adored how genuine and supportive he was. I loved his sense of humor, as well as the fact that he was a fellow landsman. When I meditate, Geep is one of my spirit guides. Yet I did not know until tonight, while googling his name on a whim, that he has left our earthly plane. I'm so sorry to learn of such sad news. I salute you Geep, wherever you are.

I am so sorry for your loss. My uncle Doug Viars workes at the Pentagon I thank god every day that he made it out ok. I also pray for the ones that lost loved ones. From the time that the plane hit until 10 pm that night we did not know if he was ok or if something had happend to him. It makes me sad that the Pentagon is not in the papers more. I wish your family well and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

May Gerald's down to earth attitude, his eternal optimism, his life and love live on in you. May warm memories of times shared with Geep lighten the sorrow in your hearts. We are very sorry for your loss. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I greatly respect and admire Geep's devotion to his client, the Department of Defense. He died supporting and pursuing great things for his country. May he rest in peace.
