Marvin Woods Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2001.
MARVIN R. WOODS, 57, of Great Mills, Md., worked for 18 years as a civilian communications manager for the Navy and had been assigned to the Pentagon since the mid-1990s. Woods' office was located where the plane crashed into the building on Sept. 11. Woods spent 22 years on active duty and retired from the Navy in December 1984 as chief radioman, said his wife, Betty Woods. "He loved his country," she said. "He would not want to give in to this terrorism. He would want the U.S. to stand together, to stand firm."

Roger and I were in the same class in high school. He went off to the Navy, and I went to college. We wrote often while he was in Japan, and I still have a pair of earrings he sent me from there. He was such a fun guy! I'm so sorry for your loss. I was happy to hear that he had such a nice family and a good life. Blessings to you all.

Marvin and I were good friends as well as co-workers. Marvin and Betty acted as sponsers for myself and my wife when we arrived at NCS Pureto Rico, Ponce PR. I was surprised and happy when I retired and worked at AT&T and had the pleasure of working with "Woody" to resolve problems at Pax River with Commercial Communications. God Bless Betty and family

Marvin Woods was a great friend to us. We first met him in Australia and continued our friendship over the many years and saw his Family grow. He was a great story teller and could make all of us laugh but he could be really serious too.He worked in the Communications field and was a dedicated man who loved the Navy.

To the Woods Family. Twenty one months ago I received a braclet with the name Marvin Woods, Pentagon on it. I have worn it at all times and it is a gentle reminder to me to pray for your family. I have done this many times and will continue to do so. I am so honored to wear this braclet everyday.

Aunt Betty & Family,

I am thinking of you all (and Uncle Roger) on this day. I know my dad sure misses his fishing and hunting buddy. My thoughts and heart and prayers are with you. "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Psalm 34:18 May God show you His presence in a very personal way to each of you today.

Sincerely,

Sending Love to you and your family. I didn't know you that well, but you would always speak to me when I was coming or going to my parents house. It was a joy being touched by those moments, and I will never forget you or your family in the brief moments we connected.

I knew Roger when I was stationed at NCS Washington '92 - '94. Roger and I did several local CommSta visits during that time. We even tipped a few in friendship as we discussed our projects and swapped a few sea stories. He was one to emulate and a true friend. Though our paths never crossed again he always remained a true friend and loyal shipmate. Roger - God Bless you and your wonderful family. Fair winds and following seas shipmate!

Several weeks ago I ordered a Mercy Band after reading about them in USA Today. I asked for any person from the Pentagon. The band I received has Mr. Woods' name engraved on it. I will faithfully wear it and remember him and his family in my prayers.

I am the mother of Melissa Rose Barnes, who was a co-worker of Mr. Woods at the Pentagon and who also died that day. I want the family to know how much Missy liked and looked up to Mr. Woods. She thought he was a great person and she loved his sense of humor. She told me many times what a pleasure he was to work with. The only thing I can say is that I wish they had been out in the Courtyard smoking. God bless your family until we meet in that land where all questions will be answered.

Roger was my trusted assistant for the last three years of my Navy career. As he had for many who came before me, he willingly gave of himself to ensure our job was easier.

Roger made life in the Pentagon bearable. His outlook on life and his comittment to "do the right thing" are to be admired.

Those in the Pentagon Courtyard were benefactors of his wisdom and commentary. Usually caustic, witty and right on target, Roger always let you know where he stood.

He really had the Pentagon wired. He knew how to get things done or who he could get to do it for you.

Roger was a loyal worker, a strong family man, a good friend.

He will always be my hero.

Daddy,

You are so missed, I had to spend our birthday without you for the first time this year..I always thought I would be a lot older before I had to spend one without you.. Ever since I can remember we have always done something special on this day that we shared for 29 years.. Funny how Ironic life is I entered into your life on your 29th birthday and you were taken from me only months before my 29th birthday.. You are always in my thoughts and I miss you terribly. Our special day will never be the same, it has lost some of the specialness without you here to share it with me..

I Love and Miss You,

Terri

We thank Marvin for devoting his life to protect America in the Navy. Such devotion comes with a brave, warm and caring heart. We are deeply sorry for your great loss. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

As one of those old "dinasours" known as a smoker, I knew Roger from the Center Court at the Pentagon. We would all congregate outside and discuss our lives, jobs, families, etc. Roger used to always "mumble"; many a time I've told him, "Would you please speak up? I can't understand a word you are saying!!" How I wish I could hear his mumbling voice just one more time!!

I can't go into the Center Court area anymore without looking for you---you with your "redneck cowboy boots and jeans" on.

I ask God why I was spared and you were taken. Why you and so many of my other "smokin' buddies" were taken. So many of them---I didn't even know their names, but I sure recognized the faces.

I miss you, my friend. And all of my other friends that I'll never see again.
