Shelley Marshall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2001.
Shelley Marshall had only two days left in her office on the Pentagon's southwest side before moving across the building.

On Sept. 11, she dropped her 3-year-old son and 20-month-old daughter at the Pentagon's day-care center near her office.

Around 9 a.m., she called her husband, Donn Marshall, to ask if he knew the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane; that was the last he heard from her.

When he was told the Pentagon had been hit, he rushed there and ran first to the day-care center to find his children. As soon as he saw them alive and unhurt, he knew his wife was among the victims.

"If she was OK, she would have been there," he said.

A no-nonsense woman with a take-charge personality, Marshall had worked as a budget analyst in the comptroller's office of the Defense Intelligence Agency for three years.

But she had other talents too. On Halloween, Shelley and Donn Marshall would bring together friends for a black-tie dinner at a remote bed-and-breakfast. "After dinner we would read ghost stories that we had written," Donn Marshall said.

"I miss her so much, and I keep thinking that she's standing behind me, in the blind spot between my shoulder blades, and I keep waiting for her touch."

I went to college with Donn Marshall, Shelley's husband. Donn was and is one of the most thoroughly decent human beings and most patriotic Americans I have ever met. Those who were privileged to meet Shelley -- as I was not -- say that she was very much the same. For me, she will always be the face of the murdered on 11 Sept 2001.

Donn,

After losing my husband that same day, (he was on the plane that hit the Pentegon) I have been reading a book for single parents. When I came across your story my heart broke, for as a mom of two girls, now 9 and 12, I too know how hard it is to keep the memoires of our loves alive for them. I guess I just want you to know that your story, and your willingness to share it, are a gift. Thank you. From the heart of another family touched by the senselessness of that day, thankyou.

I have chosen Shelley's name to wear on my heart badge, since I found someone whose name is spelled like mine. I will be singing the Mozart's Requiem with the Northwest Repertory Singers in Tacoma, WA on Sept.11,2002. I hope that Donn, you, and your children will be able to hear a choir sing this music in your area. So I want you to know that I will be thinking of Shelley and although I don't know her, I pray that God will comfort you,Donn, and your children. May He heal you and strengthen you as the music is sung for you.

Donn:

I knew you at Hampden-Sydney back in the early '80's. I feared your wife was lost when I saw the spelling of your first name. I just now confirmed my fear. I regret my tardiness in expressing my sincere condolences. Your children will comfort your loss, but I know their is no substitute for your wife. She was beautiful and obviously well-liked. Please let me know if I can be of assistance. God bless you and your family. John

Donn,

I saw you on CNN on Monday March 11th and I thought I recognized you from Hampden Sydney and then when I heard you had lost your wife at the Pentagon Attack, my heart sank. I just wanted to send my deepest sympathies to you and let you know that even if you aren't who I think you are that I am terribly sorry for your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your children during this awful time.

I read about Shelley's website in the Washington Post's Southern Maryland Extra on 2/17/02 and immediately checked it out. What a great tribute to a wonderful lady. Even though I do not know the Marshall's I have read many accounts of the events of September 11th and Donn's stories in our local paper, the Maryland Independent, and wanted to send along my thoughts and prayers. Know that Shelley will be forever in your hearts, a guardian angel over all of you.

God Bless.

Shelley -

Your smile brightened even the darkest room. Your friendship provided an indefinable warmth felt even when we were miles apart. No words can define the void those near to you now know. Look down on Donn and the children and take pride in knowing that your love has kept them strong.

May Shelley's take charge personality, her life and love live on in you. May precious memories of times together lighten the sorrow in your hearts. We are deeply sorry for your great loss of Shelley. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I asked a friend to pick up a Mercy B.A.N.D. for me. When she asked if I had a preference, I said, "no, I'll get the right one." Today I received my bracelet with Shelley's name on it. I read about her and shall never forget how brave she is. God Bless Shelley and her family, I think and pray for all of you everyday.

I wear a bracelet with Shelley's name on my wrist. When I hold my 10 month old son on my hip he wraps

two of his little fingers around the bracelet like he might be holding

a Mommy's hand. He is teething and

he has started to chew on it too.

Knowing Shelly was a mother, I am sure she would appreciate that!
