Waleed Iskandar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2001.

Waleed Iskandar,

was a consultant

By Globe Staff, 9/21/2001

Waleed J. Iskandar of Boston and London, a consultant with the Monitor Group, was killed Sept. 11 in New York City while on American Airlines Flight 11. He was 34.

Mr. Iskandar was born in Beirut. In 1984, he came to the United States and graduated from Stanford University in 1989, earning a bachelor of science degree and a master of science degree with distinction in industrial engineering and computer science.

Mr. Iskandar moved to Boston in 1990 to begin his career as a consultant with the Monitor Group, a leading global strategy consulting firm in Cambridge. In 1993, he earned a master's degree in business administration from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar.

He worked extensively in the United States, Korea, and throughout Europe. He established Monitor Group's Istanbul office and helped develop Monitor's Central/Eastern European and Middle East operations. Most recently, he was living in London and was head of Europe for Monitor's digital strategy unit.

He loved to travel and recently returned from a vacation to Greece, where he and his fiancee were planning to be married in July. He was a food and wine enthusiast who enjoyed yoga. He was fluent in French and Arabic.

Mr. Iskander leaves his parents, Joseph and Samia of Los Angeles; his fiancee, Nicolette Cavaleros of London; a brother, Sany, of Sudbury; a sister, May Marconet of Los Angeles; and six nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Church in Harvard Square in Cambridge.
Editorial Obituary published in THE BOSTON GLOBE on September 21, 2001.

An Adventurer at Heart

He was supposed to be studying for his M.B.A. at Harvard. Where was he? Water-skiing with his brother. Was that a problem? No. Waleed J. Iskandar was so sharp that he could study less, achieve high grades and squeeze in plenty of water-skiing. Classmates remembered him wandering in late for a study group and rapidly rattling off solutions to a thorny case before dashing off to the water.

Known for his zest for life and his devotion to Pink Floyd, Mr. Iskandar enchanted people — a lot of people. His contact list on his Palm Pilot consisted of thousands of names. As one of his relatives put it, "Wherever he was, that became the best place in the world to be."

He was an inveterate adventurer. Among innumerable excursions, he had biked the 400 miles from San Francisco to Santa Monica, gone on safari in Africa, explored the rain forests of South America and stayed with monks in India.

Mr. Iskandar, 34, chief of digital strategy for Europe for the Monitor Group, lived in London, and was on Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles to visit his parents. He and his fiancée, Nicolette Cavaleros, had been visiting his brother in Boston. She was going to fly to California the day after he did. They were going to be married in July.

I met Waleed while he was living on Beacon Street in Boston. Although I was working on his place, as a carpenter, he had a special talent of making me feel very comfortable, as though I'd known him for years. I only knew him for a handful of years, but he definitely had an impact on my life and I think of him often. He's missed

I received Waleed's name for remembrance this year and I am grateful to read about his inspiring life and legacy and how wonderfully he connected with so many people. I will think of him always.

Waleed and I were dormmates at Stanford and while we didn't spend a lot of time together, his confidence, charm and gregarious nature left an impression on me. Funny, likable and obviously brilliant. In fact it was me trying to find Waleed on LinkedIn today that led to the sad discovery of his death back in 2001.

21 years, and Waleed is still on our minds every year at this time. He was an inspiration to all and had many admirers. I'm sure many other families share the same kind of thoughts every year at this time, and we can only hope that the world is on a path to more harmony and less pain and tragedy. To Waleed's family, perhaps the hurt will diminish with time. We hope so.

My entire life I grew up hearing the stories of my dad (Shawn Welch) and Waleed at Stanford and the friendship that bloomed from their time together. My parents told me about when they got married in Niagara Falls and then traveled directly to Boston to stay with Waleed. (They always referred to him as the best man in their wedding.) I heard about the fun times they had there and the memories that were built. Today my mom and I were exploring Boston after traveling from Montana and we went by Waleed´s old house. Although, I never got to meet him, I´m thankful that I´ve gone my whole life knowing part of him.

This year, like every year at this time, we remember where we were and what we were doing 19 years ago. We also remember Waleed as we knew him in Kuwait - his perpetual smile, his quick mind, the effect he had on everyone around him. It's been years, and we know we are just two in a large group who wish Waleed's family our love and support. He was a remarkable student and a wonderful human being.

I found Waleed's Memorial site, when my computer finally got back after being fixed. Years ago, I found a site that turned out to be his, that plays an instrumental Ave Maria. When the computer went out the door, I remembered that the name of the website was unusual, but I couldn't quite remember it. I listened each morning to that Ave, and a beloved dog always 'sang' along...When I thought the address was lost, -I missed it. Well, it was retrieved, and today I read for the first time about the fine young man who was the inspiration for the website Memorial... Each morning, from now on, I'm sure I will remember Waleed and his family, with and in the words and music of the sweet Ave they have given us on their son's site... http://www.iskandar.com/ourlady/ourladyfeasts.html

I stumbled across this site today as I was searching for information on a former classmate from ASK. I knew Waleed so many years ago - my memories of him are of a terrific Snoopy in the school musical and on a school trip to Cairo. Dear Waleed

I heard your name read and sat at the edge of my couch. I was also born in Beirut. My parents brought my siblings and I here for a better life, to avoid the war. Who would have thought that this country, the safe haven to all people looking for a better life was to be thrown into a war.

I'm sad and heartbroken, I worked in the WTC and knew so many people there. I'm so sad, that people who spoke our language can do so much harm.

I can only imagine what your family went through and is going through 4 years later.

May you always rest in peace.

Dear Mr and Mrs Joseph Iskandar, Mr Sany Iskandar and Family, Mrs May Marconet and Family and Ms Nicollette Cavaleros

There are many heros of 9-11, you are my heros of faith.

This day last year I e-mailed the Marionite Seminary in New York asking for their prayers, the Greek Orthodox Archdioces of North America, the Orthodox Church in America too for your support and in all beseaching Our Lady of Beirut for your solace. Your faith and your grace are living candles of these prayers being answered. We have been blessed by you. Prayers, candles and love continue as does the memory of Waleed Joseph Iskandar

Dear Nicolette...to me it was no surprise that the Church of Agia Nikolas should be at the site of Waleed's repose. My dear orthodox sister in Christ. I join with many in the Trisagion for Waleed this day

Give rest, O God, to Your servant, and place him in Paradise where the choirs of the Saints and the righteous will shine as the stars of heaven.

Waleed, I only learned of your passing on this New Year's Eve from a mutual and dear friend of ours from our careless undergraduate days at Stanford. I will most remember your Chevy Camaro, your love of soccer, your razor intellect, and your heart of gold displayed to those of us lucky enough to be counted as your friends. The news has stopped me in my tracks. Reflecting on your shortened yet brilliant life, I am renewed with a deep desire to show greater love to those I hold dear, and to strive for the greatest good with the life I have been given. Waleed,

As with all of your Monitor Group colleagues, I am at a loss for words. I wish that I had said hello to you when you walked by my office the week before.

I have no doubt that somewhere up above, you witnessed your Memorial Service today. And I am also sure that you were extremely proud of Nicolette, as the rest of your colleagues were, of how strong she is. She is a rock. She is your rock. When Nicolette spoke to you directly, she made all of us feel as if you were with us in Church. She spoke to you directly through her tears. How fortunate the two of you were to have one another. How sad that the time that you did have together was shortened. You were probably beaming with pride while you watched your nephews speak. You will truly be missed by all of us. Waleed, as you know, Monitor is a Family. But through this horrible tragedy, you have brought this Family even closer. We will all miss you and will continue to think of you forever.

Your colleague and friend,

Carol
