Iskandar Iskandar Obituary

Iskandar "Alex" Iskandar

Lebanon, NH - Dr. Iskandar "Alex" Iskandar, 84, died peacefully on March 8, 2023, after a period of declining health. Alex was born in Cairo, Egypt to Karam Iskandar Takla and Aida Barsoum Mechal. He was the second eldest of ten children. Alex graduated from Shoubra High School, Cairo in 1957 and received his undergraduate from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Ain Shams University in 1961. Alex completed his M.S. degree in soil science in 1967 and immigrated to the United States the following year. Alex received his Ph.D. in 1972 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and became a naturalized citizen in 1973.

Alex's research in soil chemistry led to a position at the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, NH. Alex retired from CRREL in 2000 after serving for 25 years as a research chemist, a branch chief, and a division chief of the Geochemical Sciences Division. Alex was also credited as a Distinguished Professor at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA), Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), and Honorary Member of the International Society of Trace Element Biogeochemistry (ISTEB).

After retirement from CRREL, Alex focused on real estate and owned and managed numerous properties in the Upper Valley. He enjoyed learning to do as much of the repairs and maintenance of the buildings himself and providing affordable housing to low- and moderate-income families.

Alex was predeceased by his parents, Karam and Aida of Cairo, Egypt; sisters: Isis, Fayza, Camilla, and Nadia of Cairo, Egypt; brothers: George and Maher of Cairo, Egypt and Atif Iskandar of Lebanon, NH; and his son, George Iskandar, of Lebanon, NH.

Alex is survived by his wife, Bonnie Iskandar, of Lebanon, NH; his daughters: Niveen Iskandar Vosler of Atlanta, GA and Amy Iskandar of West Windsor, VT; stepsons: Anthony Palmerston of Savannah, GA and Bruce Palmerston of Dade City, FL; his brothers: Saied Iskandar of Orlando, FL and Mechal Iskandar of Lebanon, NH. He is also survived by five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five nephews and three nieces in both the US and Egypt.
