My dad, a fellow firefighter speaks of you often. He tells me stories of us playing in the fire house and on the beach with our family's when I was a little girl. I was recently on a deployment in Qatar eating dinner in a special dining hall and saw a photo, honoring those lost in 9-11 with your name on it...... You are truly not forgotten.

I've tried to find out as much as I can about him online and he seems like such a great guy. Id love to learn more. If you see this please reach out to me at [email protected]. I climbed representing you 5 years ago when I was in the fire academy. The name badge I wore that day has stayed with me in every locker Ive had in my short career.. on my most difficult days when I open my locker at the end of my shift I know this day wasnt so bad. You keep me going strong... You gave the ultimate sacrifice without hesitation. True courage and honor. Keeping your soul and your family in my thoughts every shift..

Thank you FF Maloney. I did not know you, but I did know your brother. Today marks another 9/11 I watch on TV or listen on the radio as the names of all those who passed on 9/11 are read. I watch or listen until I hear your name, then I can begin my work day. I was on a flight from Minneapolis to Cleveland the morning of 9/11. 2 months later I ran into your brother at a trade show in Las Vegas where Jim told me you had passed in one of the towers. You and your family wil always be remembered..........thank you for your service. The FDNY lost a great FF, the rest of us have lost a great man. God Bless You Joseph.

I had the honor of working alongside Joe for almost 10 years.
I was assigned to the great Engine Company 5 with Ladder 3 running along side us first due on most of our calls.
It was awesome to see the Ladder 3 guys go to work when it was really on. Smart, tough and stone cold determined. They saved our necks on more than one night and we returned the favor when we could. It was a time. Tears, laughter and enough memories to fill a dozen books.
Joe was right there with the best of the best. A true leader. A guy that could make things happen when they needed to happen.
On some tours I would cover an empty spot in Ladder 3 and ride up front as Big Joe handled the wheel, the same rig that now sits in the 9/11 museum. I had great confidence in any advice he would give on the way into a fire call. He had seen it all in his area of Manhattan. He would keep it simple, matter of fact. Just the stuff you needed to help you along.
I miss Joe and the members of Ladder 3 and can see their faces like it was yesterday. In my thoughts, when I see Joe, he is smiling, of course.
God Bless Joseph Maloney, Ladder 3, Engine 5 & the New York City Fire Department

I visited the 9-11 Memorial Pools and Museum in January 2016 and found Joseph E. Maloney's tributes.
My son (11) is named Joseph Maloney. I may be a 51 year-old man but I'm not too proud to admit that I cried like a baby when reading about Joe, Kathy, Joe Jnr and Megan, it was just heartbreaking.
To his family I just want to say "Thank you - for his service, and for your sacrifice. You will be in my prayers forever"
God bless you

On the evening of September 11, 2011, like many, went to church to pray for the victims and their families. After prayers we were asked to come to the alter where the priest gave us all a card containing the name of someone lost that day. On my card was the name and picture of Joseph E. Maloney,46, Farmingville. I pray for Joseph Maloney and his family for 12 years now and will continue to pray. Today I had the HONOR to see his beautiful daughter read names and thank her Dad for her lovely eyes. I have thought about his loved ones since that day and will continue. Maryellen B.-LongBeach,NY

I worked with Joes wife, Kathy at LIJ on the ICU in the early 9o's. She always made us nurses smile. And joked that Joe used to watch Baywatch to see the fast boats. I remember that he would take care of their kids when she was working. Every year I watch the 9/11 memorial and wait to see his picture and hear his name. I saw their beautiful daughter on tv today. It was very touching. I think of Kathy often- and Joe who I never met... Thank you for serving and protecting us. You're never forgotten.

Hello,
Yesterday in Sacramento, CA, they had their 3rd annual tribute to the 343 fallen fire fighters. Local Fire Fighters carry the name of a fallen firefighter over their name on their turnout coat. Eighteen months later this March and I'm fighting back tears while re-reading the articles about those we lost on 9-11. It was like reliving that horrible day all over again. But Joe's story lightened my heart. He epitomizes the FDNY guys that we know and love. I will end my memorial reading today on his happier notes.
I grew up with another Maloney family in NJ, four decades ago. (The late patriarch was a Deputy Chief on the Arson Squad). His eldest son, Joe, also became a firefighter -- but I'm relieved to know that he's still saving lives. I will remember FDNY Joe Maloney and his family in my Mass today. -- Fr. Steve +

Memories of Joe
I met Joe just 3 weeks before he died. Joe's sister, Mary Maloney Werner, lives in VA. I am Mary's neighbor and good friend. Since I am from NJ and she from NY we have become each other's surrogate family. Mary and her husband Dave and their kids David and Christopher hang out with us - my husband, John and our kids Jason and Kati. We count on each other for our weekend entertainment (beer and wine tastings), moral support, and an occasional cup of milk or other household necessities. The stuff that makes good neighbors good friends.
So it was that Joe and Kathy, Joseph and Megan came to visit Mary and Dave for a few days in VA - August 2001. Now you have to understand that when Mary and Dave have company in the summer, we have company too. Our backyard is equipped with the pool, the outdoor "Tiki" bar, the beer on tap, the hot tub, etc. We were delighted to meet Joe and Kathy, Joseph and Megan.
Not only did we meet them...but we knew instantly that we had found new friends. We proceeded to have way too much fun for the next few days. We hung out at the "tiki" bar, Joe took his kids for rides on the ATVs, everyone swam and barbecued and had a good old time. We stayed up way too late, drank a little too much and solved the many problems of the world. Until the next day, and we'd do it all over again.
It was one of those late nights when Joe decided he was almost done for the night and headed back from our house to Mary's along, what we call, "Werner Way". Werner Way is a series of paver stones amid a bed of mulch that cuts through about 8 feet of trees between our property and Mary's. Joe described to us the next day that the spacing of those stones was not exactly in sync with his stride....he had SO carefully - gingerly - stepped and hopped from one stone to the other while concentrating on NOT spilling his full drink....and certainly NOT falling off the stones. We laughed so hard when he told us all this....I mean, afterall, it's not like there was LAVA between those stones. But after a long day at the Tiki bar....there may as well have been.
One of those days, Joe and Kathy, Joseph and Megan went to Kings Dominion - an amusement park - and took my daughter Kati. She had a ball with them and they treated her as their own.
Two weeks later a crisis would occur in my family. My niece had had a serious horseback riding accident and was in ICU at Washington Hospital Center with a brain injury. Her mother (my sister) had been at ICU round the clock...and finally over the weekend, came to my house where my other sister and 2 brothers came from NJ to VA to offer their moral support. The Werner's came over and we were letting loose a bit. And Mary thought it would be a great idea to call Joe and let MY brother speak to HER brother.
It was Saturday night, September 8.
It was a silly conversation...and Joe said that now he could imagine just where we were all sitting and hanging out. He spoke with my brother Bill. We laughed again about his encounter with the paver stones in Werner Way. And we talked about when he would come to VA next year....
...and that was the last time we would speak with Joe.
We didn't even know on Sept 11 that he was gone. We knew he was missing...but like the rest of the world...held onto every shred of hope. After more than 2 weeks...he was found.
We drove to Long Island to attend the funeral - me and my husband, John, and our kids Jason and Kati.
And when we saw Kathy she said...."Oh, we thought we had found nice new friends."
And all I could manage back was "you did"....and she vowed that she and the kids would come back to visit next year.
...and she did. We all sat at the Tiki bar and swam in the pool and cried about Joe...and laughed about those shared days the year before.
We remember Joe often. Mary speaks of him always. And we share her family's grief.
And as we carefully negotiate those stones back and forth between our yards in Werner Way - now renamed "Joe's Way" - laughing inside over the memories of Joe gingerly stepping through them - and knowing that he's smiling down on us sharing the chuckle - you can be sure that we will never forget Mary's brother. Dave's brother-in-law. David and Christopher's Uncle. Kathy's husband. Joseph and Megan's Dad. Jim and Mary's son.
Our new friend, Joe.
'Til we meet again, Joe.
With all our love,
Betty, John, Jason and Kati Rose Meyer

My family and I recently moved to Las Vegas in the Spring from New Jersey. My husband, a union construction carpenter was called to assist that fateful morning, in the rescue and recovery along with other contruction workers. He volunteered on the site for 5 days...I worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, NJ overlooking Manhattan and spoke with many families of victims searching for their loved ones.Although we have moved to the West, we took all the pride of being from NY with us. Your story Joe, and many others will live on forever, we will NEVER forget and talk of our experiences there often to the people out here. I wear the bracelet bearing your name with pride and remembrance. May God Bless you and your family and all the others we keep in our hearts.

I worked with Kathy, what seams like a million years ago, in the ICU at LIJ. The first time I met Joe was at a BBQ at their house. Just a bunch of nurses and Joe hanging out. Kathy and Joe were a lot of fun to watch. Since 9-11, they have become part of my daily thoughts and prayers. I wish you strength, courage, and, most of all, peace. Love, As Always, ICU-Sue

I graduated Herricks High School with Joe. 9/11 was and continues to be an unbelievable day in my life and our history. To know that a fellow classmate, someone my age, who shared school experiences is no longer here, now a hero, now leaving a family makes the world a little smaller. Thank-you Joe for being there for others though our lives have never crossed paths since that year of 1973. Too young a hero. My children have viewed your high school photo in my year book and it made them realize how cruel reality can be, more than any newspaper article. May God bless your family and the people you touched!

I remember watching Joe and his brothers and sisters grow up in Albertson,N.Y. I lived only a block from the Maloney residence and my wife and I frequently remarked that the entire Maloney family was so handsome. This is a terrible loss. Everyone agrees JOE and all those like him were genuine heroes- the kind kids must appreciate rather than sports figures and entertainment stars. I can only add to this humble tribute that JOE obviously developed into a very good copy of his mother,Mary, and his father,Jim, with whom I served in the NYPD a lifetime ago. There is no doubt in my mind that God will watch over his family lovingly.

Just want to tell you a few things about my brother in law Joe. Joe was a man with many friends. A big man with a bigger heart. A great sense of humor that could make anyone laugh. He always greeted his friends and family with a giant hug, which would really have you feeling love by him. HIs greatest love was his family, he took pride in being a Dad. He left us two beautiful children. His son greets his friends and family with that same special hug. HIs daughter is beautiful she looks just like her Dad. God Bless you JOe.

One of my Christmas presents was a mercy bracelet inscribed with Joseph E. Maloney's name. Since then I have wanted to let his family and friends know that they are in my daily thoughts and prayers. Cherish the memories and know that Joseph will always being watching over you.

Me and My husband Bob knew Joe briefly. Our sons played football together. My husband said he was the kind of guy he wanted to get to know better. We think of him and his wife Kathy and the kids everytime we are reminded of this horrible event. I have to tell you the most touching thing that I saw was seeing our little boys all wear black armbands in the game following Joes death. The Drosselmeiers hearts and prayers go out to Kathy and the kids.

Everyday I, too, wear a Mercy Band inscribed with Joseph E. Maloney's name. It puts everything that happens throughout the day into proper perspective. Each of the many times a day that I see it, I pray for his family and give thanks for him and those like him who answer our calls for help. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family.

I have heard so many wonderful stories about Joe from his sister Mary that it breaks my heart to see her have to mourn her brother's death at far too young of an age. I have two older brothers myself, one of which Mary is married to and I couldn't imagine losing one of them the way she lost Joe. Kathy & Joseph & Megan, Mary & James, Mary, Elizabeth, Brian, Jim...you are all in my prayers.

Joe was the brother of my sister-in-law, Mary. I hope time eases her grief and the pain she is experiencing is subdued with the wonderful love and memories that Joe left her with. It's hard to see someone you love have such immense sadness in their life - these notes about Joe and all the other brave hero's that day will help to ease their loss.
