Sal Tieri Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2001.
Sal Tieri Jr., 40, exec with a heart Sal Tieri Jr. is remembered as a good-hearted man who gave a lot of attention to his 7-year-old and 5-year-old sons.

"He was always with his boys in the neighborhood," recalled Peggy Fallon, a neighbor. "He was always pitching a ball and riding bikes with them."

On Sept. 11, Mr. Tieri , 40, of Shrewsbury, was at a meeting on the 99th floor of One World Trade Center when disaster struck. A managing director for Marsh & McLennan, he normally would have been in his Midtown office.

"He was an outstanding young man who conducted all aspects of his life with honor and integrity," is how Mr. Tieri's family remembers him.

Born in North Bergen, Mr. Tieri grew up on the Jersey Shore, mostly in Sea Bright and Monmouth Beach.

"He loved the ocean," said his sister in law, Cathie Licht. "He loved fishing."

In 1983, Mr. Tieri graduated from William Patterson College with a bachelor of arts degree in police science and business administration.

In 1990 he joined Marsh's New Jersey operations as a manager. Mr. Tieri was promoted to senior vice president in 1994 and managing director three years later. He was named manager of the financial products department in 2000 for the company's Northeast region.

As manager, Mr. Tieri managed Marsh's delivery of services to many Fortune 500 companies.

Outside the office, Mr. Tieri was a family man, neighbor and friend.

Licht said when she built her house six years ago, her brother-in- law was there to help. "He helped build the trenches for me. He helped build my deck."

That was part of Mr. Tieri's can- do spirit. "Whatever it takes," was his motto, Licht said.

Mr. Tieri is survived by his wife, Maureen; two sons, Jonathan and Austen; his mother, Rosemarie of Monmouth Beach; a sister, Faith Tieri Scheur of Leonia; his father- in-law and mother-in-law, Clifford and Lilian Whiteside of Sterling Heights, Mich.; three sisters-in-law, Cathie Licht, Patty Rogers and Cheryl Whiteside; four brothers-in- law, Mark Scheur, Bill Licht, Craig Rogers and Cliff Whiteside; seven nieces, Britainy, Jennifer, Kristen, Kimberly, Kelly, Camaryn, Regan and Quinn; two nephews, Brandon and Kyle, and many other relatives.

A memorial service and flag dedication will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Driftwood Cabana Club, Ocean Avenue, Sea Bright.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sal Tieri Jr. Memorial Fund, c/o Pam Wescott-Arkenau, Shrewsbury State Bank, 465 Broad St., Shrewsbury, N.J. 07702.

Thinking of your family and sending our heartfelt sympathy. May God always continue to give the comfort and help needed to cope. Sal touched the lives of others and is still sadly missed and will always be remembered with love. Finally may the time come when these acts of violence end.

Dear Faith,
Each day you shed a tear for the closest friend you ever had. Sal was not only your brother but your friend, your mentor the person you looked to for advice and guidance. The both of you shared the ultimate bond that only siblings could share. I remember his smile, and his quiet presence. He was a gentle soul who was kind to all, and always had a funny line that would make every laugh. It seems like yesterday that this tragedy occurred, but Sal always remains in your heart. Everyday he is with you, in your memories, in your heart and in Brandon. Love you forever.

After watching the 10 year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I reflected on the ones I knew that day and thought of Sal and is wife Maureen. I worked with you Maureen at AIG and thought of you as a friend. I knew Sal as someone who always had a smile on his face when he came into the AIG offices. As a victim of a violent crime myself and forgotten by those I held in regard, I hope he will always be remembered by those who knew him and not forgotten. God bless you and your children.

To the loving members of Sal Tieri's family - I remember Sal when he would come to Emerson High School. He would come when he got out early from his school, or when he had the day off. He would sit at the end of the long tables in the home ec room, waiting for his mom. He was always quiet, and always polite. We would say, "hi" and then allow him to retreat to his books. He was a wonderful son to his mom, and I have read a wonderful husband and father, too. These ten years have passed so quickly, and still the pain of hearing of his death is still so fresh in my heart. I will always remember him, and keep his family in my prayers.

September 11, 2011

Sal- although we never met, I will always remember you on 9/11. Your mom was my sewing teacher and someone who I respected and loved. She was so proud of you and your sister Faith. I was so sad to read about your death. Such a young man with a young wife and family should never have been taken. God always calls the best ones young... I am sure you are up in heaven watching over your family with your mom and dad by your side. May God bless you and your family this day and always.

I hope that you have been able to move on with your life although that will have been so hard. Any way, I send my love to you. Sarah McCooey from CML in Lloyd's. xxx

BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES ARE WONDERFUL THINGS,

THEY LAST TILL THE LONGEST DAY,

THEY NEVER WEAR OUT,

THEY NEVER GET LOST,

AND CAN NEVER BE GIVEN AWAY…………….

TO SOME YOU MAY BE FORGOTTEN,

TO OTHERS A PART OF THE PAST.

BUT TO THOSE WHO LOVED AND LOST YOU,

YOUR MEMORY WILL ALWAYS LAST.

Sal Tieri Jf. was my Uncle, and he was such a great man, and everyone loved him. When people asked me who i thought the funniest person was, i ALWAYS said my Uncle Sal. He made everyone laugh! He was not just funny he was nice, caring, loving, a wonderful husband, a great friend, a great father to his two sons (Jonathan and Austen). He was a hero as well. He brighten the day of many. I sent out my heart to my Aunt Maureen, and her to sons. I love you guys so much and everyone loved and still loves him very much. He is missed much everyday and is always in our hearts.

Pray for the ones who survived,
but remember the ones who died.
None of our loved ones are ever coming back,
So please honor the 9/11 attack.

I met Sal Tieri in late 1999 when I went to work at Marsh on their front desk for one day through a temp agency. I met Sal who interviewed me for a job in the Marsh NJ Finpro department, and I knew him at the time of his death on 9/11. My memories of him are of a sweet, kind, loving man who spoke of his wife and family constantly. He loved life and his family and friends. I do not know anyone who knew him that did not like him. He will always be remembered by his colleagues and friends. May you rest in peace never to be forgotten Sal. Vivienne

I grew up with Sal in Monmouth Beach. He was a couple of years younger than I was, and much more responsible where it came to his Family, at that age. We often tried to get him to come out to play, but he ALWAYS put his responsibilities first.

His Dad was already sick when we were young, having to do with his heart and I remember his passing at a very early age. He was a very sweet, kind Soul.

Though Sal did find time to play when we were kids, his first loyalty was to his family. He would go crabbing and sell the crabs to help his family when his Dad stopped working, and he started working in a neighbor's restaurant at a young age. He did all he could, all the time.

We never had a fight in all the years that I knew him. He was just plain good.

He did love to fish and crab and swim and some of the best pictures I have of me surfing in my teens were all taken by Sal. They're still on my walls. I think of him all the time. I treasure them and the memories I have of him bringing them to me with joy.

What hurts even more was that he took such good care of himself, because he didn't want to go early like his Dad. I remember when he met his Wife, they were young and happy and in love when so many of us were struggling to find our way. In that respect, they were so lucky.

I know it's 3 years and I'm only doing this now, but I have never forgotten for a day since I heard.

Time passes, people move on. I know he was a great Dad, I know he was devoted. I know that he was a good, good boy and grew to be a good, good Man.

I couldn't bear to go to his Service, to see his Mom, Faith, Maureen and his boys. My love and respect go out to them. I know it was the final blow for his Mom.

I never stopped crying in my Heart for he and his family. I never will.

God Bless You, Sal.

Dear Maureen, Jonathan, Austen, Cliff and Lillian,

David and I and the kids want to express our sympathy to all of you and your families. We pray for peace within your hearts, knowing that Sal is at peace now. He's your guardian angel from heaven and watches over you from above. Please know we're praying for you. Keep in touch. We love you!

I just came upon this memorial on a fluke search hit. I am very sorry for your loss. It seems the tragedy on September 11 hits even closer to home when someone with the same last name, an uncommon one, was taken during the tragedy. Again, my heartfelt sorrows.

I didn't know you, but last Sunday at my church, we were given the chance to take a slip of paper with a name of someone who had died on September 11, 2001. I have your name. I pray for your family and I hope that it helps, somehow. I'm at a loss for words about your tragedy and the tragedies of so many others...all I can do is pray.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Sal was the Financial coverage specialist on the Nextel account when I was Director of Risk Management. He was a wonderful fellow, very knowledgeable, and most personable. When I needed an answer, Sal was always there to provide it in a timely fashion. He was a most valuable member of the Marsh team servicing my account.

My heart goes out to his family..

He will always be fondly remembered

Rest in Peace!
