Melissa Harrington-Hughes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2001.
Never in One Place for Long

She so loved fine wine that when she and her fiancé, Sean Hughes, decided to marry, they chose a leafy vineyard in Napa Valley for the wedding. Her name was Melissa Harrington and after the wedding she added her husband's name to hers.

Mrs. Harrington-Hughes was the director of business development for the Slam Dunk Networks in Redwood City, Calif. She came to New York on Sept. 10 to attend a breakfast the next morning at the World Trade Center.

"She liked everything fine," said her father, Robert Harrington. "Loved the opera, loved to travel, loved a bottle of good wine. And professional football. Her favorite team was the Green Bay Packers and her favorite player was Brett Favre."

Mrs. Harrington-Hughes, 31, was so enthusiastic about travel, her father recalled, that she would not come home after spending her junior year of college in Bologna, Italy. She took a job as an au pair in France, spent two months in Paris and then one on the Riviera. "When I called in May to wish her a happy birthday, they told me she had taken off to Africa," Robert Harrington said. "Riding camels in Morocco."

Mrs. Harrington-Hughes was particularly proud of her work in the San Francisco Junior League. "She would want any article written about her to mention the Junior League," said her father. "They were grooming her to be president."

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on September 1, 2002.

What irony only in New York one day only to die from a plane crashing into the building your in. This is confirmation when its your time to die, nothing can stop it. Melissa seemed so accomplished and beautiful but most of all she had an incredible father who tried everything to help her live. Hope Melissa knew Jesus and is in heaven today. Rest in peace my friend.

I´m just a stranger but I will never forget your story. I learned a bit about it when watching Sean on Today show. Your phone message to Sean was heartbreaking. Out of the many, your name/beauty has never been forgotten, by me ~ you left a mark with what you had already accomplished yet still had so much more left to do. Hard to believe 22 years has gone by.

Our prayers and blessings are with you at this time of year and always. She was obviously such a beautiful lady. We discovered her maiden name when we went to the memorial in New York. We are from a Harrington lineage also so her name caught our attention. My grandfather's name was Robert Harrington. Also, from Washington and California. Our lineage started in Kinderhook. We will remember her goodness. God bless.

Me and my daughters have been blessed to have been introduced to Melissa's story. A gift of love, kindness and life taken so very soon. My eldest daughter was 5 yrs old when the attacks happened and my youngest wasn't born for another 4 yrs. It is so important that we as parents keep each and every person who lost a life.. loved one... friend on that tragic day in our hearts. Melissa's story and love for her family was beautiful. As was so many of the others that were lost. Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your family's story with me and my daughters. If there is a silver lining to be found in such a loss. . I imagine it would called Melissa Hughes. Bless your family and live life full of knowing. . She is looking over and still loving you all. Rest in peace Melissa

Always remembered...

September 11, 2012

On 9/11/01, of everything saw and heard, it was Melissa's recorded message to her husband (one that was played on the news coverage) that has always stayed with me. I never knew her but her message was so knowing and it was so important for her to say "I Love You". Such strength, such devotion. I've thought of that message and what her life was like many times through the years after looking on the website of victims and seeing her name. Only today did I look further and found "WOW" what a woman!! What a life!! God rest her big, beautiful soul. And family, I wish peace for you all.

EVERY year I think of Melissa Harrington-Hughes. To me, her story is one of a life lived to the fullest, a love story, and a tragic loss I will never forget so long as I live. I often wonder what happened to the man who loved her so, how he tried so desperately to get to her following the tragedy, and how their story breaks my heart. Melissa.....I think about you still. I never knew you but oddly each year thoughts of you and your family and loved ones come to mind.

It's been 10 years since that tragic day. I just heard Melissa's story watching a documentary yesterday. I will be turning 40 this year, as I believe Melissa would have also. Please know that even though I never knew her, she has deeply touched my life by hearing her story. I am tearful and forever affected, but also mindful of the precious gifts of love and life. I hope her husband and family know that she has made a difference in the life of a woman in Minnesota years after her death, and I have no doubt she will continue a rich legacy for others to be inspired by.
Sincerely and God Bless. My prayers are with you.
