Robert Horohoe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2001.
In Love With His Work

Robert L. Horohoe Jr. was literally reared to be a corporate bond broker. His father, a former senior executive at Cantor Fitzgerald, kept a Telerate machine in their house and introduced him early to terms like "bid" and "offer."

So when Mr. Horohoe graduated from college and went to work for Cantor Fitzgerald in 1992, it was a natural and seamless progression. "He loved it there," said his brother Michael, who once worked at Cantor as a bond broker. (One sister, Donna Erskine, is also a former Cantor employee.) "People would gripe all the time, but Bobby never complained about going to work so early and leaving late. He was team Cantor."

After 10 years in Battery Park City, where he could see his office from his apartment, Mr. Horohoe, 31, had decided to buy a home in his native Holmdel, N.J., where he spent nearly every weekend at his mother's house, relaxing with his fiancée, recounting tales of earlier days with his high school buddies, and playing tennis with fellow weekday city dwellers.

Now, his mother, Patricia, said, "On Friday when I come home, the house is a little empty. Maybe I'm just waiting for him to come through the door and say `Ah, it was a hoax' or something."

I was Rob's neighbor too, and wanted to let everyone know that we think about him every year on 9/11. He had a warm smile and always said hello to you. I'll never forget the night he rang my bell pretty late to borrow a corkscrew, and yes, he did return it! Great guy - gone too soon.

Bobby was my neighbor in Gateway Plaza; I didn't know him well - just to say hello. When I first moved into the building I used to meet Bobby by the elevators usually either on his way to or from work and often at night returning from a game at the Garden with his beloved Rangers. He was often in the company of various girlfriends, all gorgeous and effervescent. One day I saw him with one especially beautiful young woman and thereafter never with anyone but her - the last time I saw Bobby he and his fiancee were giving her mother a tour of the World Trade Center. I miss seeing him. He was by far the coolest guy on our floor.
Much love to his family and friends - I know you must miss a spirit as bright as his.

Dear Rob,

I had the thought today, on this 5-year anniversary, that you and our other lightworkers who left us that day would want 1 thing from those of us left here - to start living our life missions now with complete commitment and passion, if we have not done so already.

I believe you were part of a larger transformation of our world, and you gave your lives to help awaken us. There is a higher reason for all of it - Thank you Rob.

With much love and gratitude,

your classmate/lockermate :)

Over the last few months, I have thought of Rob often. I did not know him. His name was given to me to place a tribute. All that has been placed here, lovingly, gave me an idea of who Rob was. ~Thank-you. I think I have gleened, in part, how wonderful Robert/Rob was. There are not words enough. I hurt as I wrote and thought. Prayers and thoughts go before these. Bless you all that loved him. I will never forget!

On the one year anniversary of 9/11 my partner and I went to the E. Broad street Pres. Church in Columbus, Ohio, to listen to Mozarts requiem. When we filed through the entrance we were handed a slip if paper. On this slip of paper was Roberts name. While listening to the music with my eyes closed I knew that Robert was okay.

" Lux perpetua luceat eis "

Be well.

How do we tell you,Rob's family, how we feel about the loss of Rob? When I saw Lilia the first day we could return for clothing and she showed me Rob's picture my heart sank. He was our neighbor on the 8th floor of Gateway 200 building for years. Rob was the handsome, athletic guy who always had a kind word for my daughters. He never missed a Halloween to stay home and answer the doorbell to give out candy to the many trick or treaters. He was a part of our neighborhood. We thought of him tonight at our vigil as we dedicated flowers to the Hudson in his name. We will never forget him. Our prayers are for you his family and Lilia. The Reynolds Family

For 5 years of my youth, Rob's locker was directly to the right of mine, being alphabetically next to each other in homeroom. Going to my locker was always an adventure with Rob around! In our junior high days, he teased me, but in high school we were on friendlier terms and I might've even had a little crush on him then too :) I was the quiet mysterious one, and he was the outgoing jokester. Rob, I'll never forget your quick wit and that glint in your eyes. You inspired a few childhood journal entries and will never be forgotten.

I am so sorry for what you went through, but I know God is taking care of you and your family. Be blessed always.

Bobby - We met a few times thanks to our mutual friend, John McErlean from Cantor. It was my good fortune to have known you both. I had a stomach ache from laughing, the night you two took me out for a pint at Batt Pk City. God bless you both, you loved to laugh.

Thank you Bobby.

I remember when you and your family had the condo at Point Pleasant Beach. All the kids could hang out together in the parking lot and go down the boardwalk. It seems like only yesterday. We were so sad to learn you were one of the victims of this awful tragedy. I pray for your family. May God give them the strength to deal with this loss.

You will be missed.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
