Harry Raines Obituary

Stones in the Office
Those who didn't know Harry Raines by name called him "the guy with the kids." He had three of them, Jillian, 8, Kyle, 6, and Kimberly, 2. For his vegetable garden, they each made him steppingstones, plates of concrete inlaid with colored decorative glass. Mr. Raines wanted the stones at his office, where he was the vice president of global networking for eSpeed. He lined them up on the windowsill of his office at the World Trade Center.

"He enjoyed life," said his wife, Lauren. He was always up at the crack of dawn. He would go out to the dead end of the street and play soccer with his son or splash in the pool with the children. Or he would go running and dirt-trail biking at Jones Beach with his twin brother, Mark.

"Kids were the focus of our lives," Mrs. Raines said.

But lately, she said, "we found we were missing each other, too." On Sept. 9, Mr. Raines, 37, asked her to come for a Sunday walk. She had a lot of things to do, but he told her, "Slow down, slow down." She recalled: "He just came and grabbed my hand. We were always holding hands."

This terrible tragedy affected us all in so many ways. I just want to thank the Raines family for being so gracious and thoughtful while dealing with their loss. While I was deployed to Saudi Arabia Mrs. Raines and her kids would right to me through the Soldiers Angels program and send care packages. I will never forget how thoughtful they all were. We shared pictures and I even sent them hand made bracelets from the troops. Bless you guys and again I am so sorry for your loss.

Allison,
I am touched by your warm regards and thank you for your kind words. Interestingly, my daughter spent six weeks of her summer touring Australia and loved your beautiful home. Blessings to your family as well.

My family and I visited the 9/11 Memorial in September 2011. We are from Australia. We LOVE New York, always have, my great grandma was born there. We took minimal photos of the site out of respect, however, there is a photo of my son reflecting and offering thoughts to all those who died...in the photo is the name Harry A Raines. It flips on my digi photo frame daily at work and I needed to find out who the man was attached to the name I see frequently here in Australia. I think of his name all the time, his name is precious. My deepest sympathies and sincere thoughts and hopes that Harry's family are doing well. My kindest regards, Allison.

Harry is the nephew of a vert special couple I know. Harry, you are thought of stronger than ever on this 10th anniversary. My fondest memory of you is when we went horsebackriding in your late teens. I will never forget you and 9/11. You'll always be in my heart. Prayers for your family.

Harry and Mark Raines were in my graduating class at Brooklyn Tech. I also remember them both riding the LL train to school. I am deeply saddened to learn 30 years later and on the 10th anniversary of 9-11 that Harry lost his life. RIP.

Hi. I am 15 years old and yesterday at our high school football game, they handed out a bunch of yellow papers throughout the game. . All the papers had a name on it and I got one that said Harry A. Raines. I had know idea why we had these random yellow papers with someone's name I have never heard of. My friends and I thought they were players our football team that we didn't know, but later in the game we were informed that the names on these yellow papers were September 11th victims. At half time, as the band played a song in memory of everyone that was lost 8 years ago the whole crowd held up their yellow paper with their victims name on it. The sight of it gave me goose bumps. I just wanted to let everyone know that even know I don't know Harry A. Raines that he is still in our hearts.

Harry worked for me for many months as my tech consultant in a high pressure, difficult Wall Street project. Throughout the effort, he never lost his good humor and easy going manner. After work, he frequently spoke of his wonderful family and his love and devotion for them was always clear.

My heart goes out to those who were close to Harry. Now that I have a family of my own, I grieve for his wife and children whose lost love can never be replaced. May you find some solace in knowing that Harry affected everyone he met and he will always be remembered.

I just found out Harry was lost at the World Trade Center and am deeply upset. Harry's family and mine lived on the same block (Cooper Avenue) when we were kids. I remember we always got along well because Mark, Harry and I all liked snakes. I still remember how upset Harry was when his pet garter snake died. Since I hadn't seen him in about 25 years I did not even know we worked at the trade center until a friend of mine mentioned it to me the other day. I'd like to offer my deepest sympathies to his family and let them know that Harry will be in our prayers from now on.

Harry lived around the block from us. The last time we saw him was a week before September 11th. He was out taking his usual walk with his family. Our families spoke about the upcoming school year and then we all went on our way. We did not know that would be the last time we would see him.

Everyone in our neighborhood knew Harry, he was a friendly and happy guy always doing something with his kids. We would see him pulling his kids in a wagon, riding bicycles with them, washing the car, playing ball, or even rollerskating...Even the family dog was not left out, he would pull Harry while he was on his rollerskates. He really did seem to enjoy life. The only time we did not see him with his kids was at 5 a.m. jogging before he went to work. Harry was a true family man.

Although you are no longer with us, you are surely not forgotten. There is not a day that goes by that we do not think of you, Lauren and the kids. Words just cannot express the saddness we all share with you. May God Bless you and your family. Forever in our hearts.

i haven't seen Harry since our days at

St. Anthony's Grammer School in the Village. I remember, it was Harry or his twin that had a scar on the side of his face

from a childhood accident. That's how I can

tell them apart....

My thoughts are with his family, friends,

and all those who love him.

Brooklyn Tech helped develop many wonderful people, some of whom were lost on Sept. 11, 2001 in the WTC disaster. My prayers go out to the family of Harry Raines and the people he touched on a daily basis who are surely missing him.

I hope his 3 children can find their way to a wonderful school like BTHS; so they may be enriched with the many things Harry received as a student their.

Peace and Blessings

May Harry's love and life live on in his children. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Harry. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
