John Ryan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2001.
A Born Equity Trader
For John J. Ryan Jr., going to work on Wall Street was a natural: his father, John Sr., had been an equity trader. So, in due course, was his younger brother Patrick. "It was in the blood," said Patrick Ryan, who works for J. P. Morgan. ''We all have the personality where we get on with people, which you need. That and a sense of humor. And I guess we all like the energy you get on Wall Street."

John Ryan Jr. — known to his friends as J.R. — began his lifelong commute to downtown Manhattan at the age of 14, when he traveled from Suffern, N.Y., to attend Xavier High School on West 16th Street. Later, after graduating from Holy Cross College, he began work at a bank. At age 45, he was still commuting, from West Windsor, N.J., where he lived with his wife, Patricia, and their three children, to a job as an equity sales trader for Keefe, Bruyette & Woods.

In an age of electronic trading, Mr. Ryan prided himself on an old-fashioned relationship with his longstanding clients. "He was very customer-oriented," said Mrs. Ryan, who also once worked on a Wall Street trading desk. "He learned the right way, from the old school."

Those clients may not have known a few other things about Mr. Ryan: his fanatical devotion to the rock band the Who, or how he could easily have become a history teacher or a high school coach. He may have worked hard, but he was still a "hands-on father," Patrick Ryan said.

John and I were classmates, dorm mates, teammates and sometimes we squared off against one another at Holy Cross. I always enjoyed his quiet strength and dry wit. John, I think of you often and think of your family. May God bless you.

I met J.R. at Holy Cross as a freshman in Healy. We talked, drank, laughed and listened to the Who together. He was a kind and generous person, and I am sure a wonderful husband and father. My deepest sympathy to his family, I'm so glad I got to know him. God Bless

I met John when he was attending Holy Cross and dating Patty Esposito. I was friends with Patty's sister, Gina. John was the first football player that I knew that I really liked. He was fun, intelligent, and a real gentleman. It is hard to reconcile disliking Wall Street guys when you know someone like John. It was an honor to have known people like John and Patty. I also got to meet their daughter, Laura , as a newborn baby. They are always in my thoughts.

I just moved back to the US after living abroad since 1998. Just now I learned of John's death. He and I were good friends in grammer school and drifted apart after the high school years. Last seeing each other during the summer of our freshman years of college.

He will always be remembered in my prayers and the memories we shared in Suffern, New York. We played alot of basketball on Mile Road.

I actually was looking up information on my father Charles Bianchino Sr when I came across this site. My father worked with John and though very highly of him. My father passed away 9/10/05 from cancer but during those last years he was truly heartbroken at what had happened to his friends and co-workers.

It's hard to believe that tomorrow it will be four years since that tragic day yet few days go by that I don't think of "JR", my closest friend...my third brother. We met in August 1970 on the bus heading off to the Xavier(HS) football camp and we never looked back. Xavier...Holy Cross...kids...life. We did so much of it together...31 years of the greatest memories anyone could hope for. God led me to this site tonight to again remind me to live every day as if it were my last. Looking at his picture here tonight reminds me how blessed I was to have a friend like JR. I'll always love him and miss him. Love to Patty, Laura, Colin, Kristin and to all the Ryan family.

To the Ryan Family: I dated (John's brother) Teague, 25 years ago, as a freshman at Seton Hall University. Just tonight, for the first time, I saw John's name on a list of those who perished at the World Trade Center. After so many years, I still remember you all with affection, and the strong sense of family that bound you together. I will think of you on this 4th anniversary of John's passing, and I am truly sorry for your loss. Sue

I didn't know John, but a good friend of mine, Ed Haskins, a classmate of John's, was a close friend. Immediately after John's death, Ed took the time to tell me about him. Having read the tributes in this column, I know many others thought the world of John. My thoughts and prayers will be with John and his family tomorrow. God Bless you all.

Sincerely, Brian Blanchfield, Xavier '70

I did not personally know Mr. Ryan but was compelled to sign this guestbook. My family and I were neighbors of the Ryan's for several years and my younger brother had the honor of calling John "Coach" and was also friendly with his son Colin. When our family heard of John's passing, my brother Michael could hardly believe that his "favorite coach" as a child was gone. Although we no longer live in West Windsor, the news hit home and we continue to keep the Ryan family in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

Mr. Ryan was a good friend and neighbor of my family's. I have known him for as long as I can remember. The Ryan's were always at the beach the same time we were and we were always allowed to go over and use their pool anytime we wanted. I have fond memories of both. We miss you, Mr. Ryan and you will forever be in my heart.

I first learned that John was among the missing when I heard his name at the Memorial Mass at Xavier on Sept 19, and it shocked me to my core. I will be keeping John and his family in my prayers.

I first met John at Xavier, we are both Class of '74. I played football my sophmore year and was a Team Mgr my Junior year. John was a real leader and it would have been easy for him to the play the star as he was the starting quarterback, he didn't he treated everyone with dignity and respect. Later we would kid because I was going to BC and him to the Cross. God Bless him and his memory. Kevin McLaughlin

We are very sorry for your loss of John. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
