Michael Lunden Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2001.
The Perennial Best Man

Michael P. Lunden's friends always said he was worth waiting for, an assertion he tested frequently. "They called him the Human Rain Delay," said Michelle Lunden, who married him even though he was 20 minutes late to their first date.

People would wait for Mr. Lunden, 37, because, basically, no event could start without him. He was the constant center of an ever-widening social circle, a member of 26 wedding parties, a hyperfriendly guy in a loud Brooks Brothers shirt who introduced himself to each and every waiter, bartender and vineyard keeper he came into contact with.

When Mr. Lunden was not cocooning (loudly) with Michelle and their 10-month- old son at their Manhattan home or their weekend place on the North Fork of Long Island, or playing Friend's Best Man for the umpteenth time, or touting a new merlot, he was an energy trader at Cantor Fitzgerald.

The night before Mr. Lunden's memorial service, a few of his pals — about 85 of them, actually — got together at his favorite steakhouse, Smith & Wollensky. "Somebody said that only Michael would have a rehearsal dinner for his funeral," Ms. Lunden said. Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani happened to be eating there. He went over to see what all the noise was about and ended up donning a baseball cap that said "Lundo!!" and giving a speech about the indomitable spirit of the city.

It's sad to lose a fellow Michael Lunden I hope the best to him and his family

September 12, 2011

The name Michael P Lunden came to me via a rememberance card at the SF Giants vs LA Dodgers baseball game on 9/11/11, and entire decade and country away from the disasters of that day. Although I was effected as all Americans were, I did not personally know anyone who lost their life that day. Michael P Lunden is the only 'name' that I hold. I was so moved by the rememberance ceremony and so moved to learn more about this person who's life was tragically cut short that day. I challenged all those around me to do the same with the 'names' on their card. Michael, I never knew you, but you will always have a place in my heart, I will always cherish you, honor you, and remember you. I wish nothing but peace, love and happiness for those that you left behind. We will never forget you Michael.

I never knew Mike but 10 years ago I received a small remembrance card at Christ the King Catholic Church in Atlanta with his name on it. On the front of the card it says, "Michael P. Lunden, Manhasset, NY, Partner, vice president, Cantor Fitzgerald, Last Known Location: World Trade Center." On the back there is a short prayer, "May the angels lead you into paradise; May the Martyrs welcome you upon your arrival, and lead you into the holy city of Jerusalem. May a choir of angels welcome you and may you have eternal rest. September 11, 2001." This card has been sitting on my desk for 10 years; I have read it many times and thought of Mike and his family. We will all be praying for Mike and all of the fallen at the memorial Mass this Sunday at Christ the King in Atlanta. God bless you all!

Mark and family, came across a front page on AOL today and ironically it made me think of Mike and my days at Loyola. I think Mark catered to pink Polo shirts and Mike liked blue. In any event I'll say a prayer and we all know our good friend Charlie and he are together watching over all of us. Take care and how about we all get together sometime in Chicago!

To Michael and his family --

As with no doubt many others, Mike touch my life in a sort of indirect way. My brother and I, Pat, played ice hockey with Mike in the 80-81 Loyola Academy school year. No offense, but Mike was a terrible hockey player. I was not much better, but his spirit, good nature, and constant comedic presence made the season bearable and every practice something to look forward to. I look back at the picture of the team, Neil H, MIke P, Ziggy, etc. And there is Mike, the one guy I knew who perished on that terrible day. May his spirit, craziness, good-heartedness, and all of the rest live on. Go Ramblers, Go Holy Spirit, and Go Mike. Peace to all.

Just thinking about the first time I met Lundo. I was a poor ass bond broker in NYC for some training. He bought me beer all night at Wollensky's. I have been going there for 15 years now and will always raise a glass to him.

Michael, the people of this Country, including the Southland, will never forget. Never.

Just to look into those happy shinning blue eyes, you own world would light up. He had a very special way of making you smile by just watching him for two minutes.

When I met Michael, he wanted to work for a winery on his weekends. For a short-time, within his hectic schedule, he worked with me at a North Fork winery. At this time he was so anticipating the birth of his first child. He was so excited!

We all thought of Michael often and hoped to run into him again. I now wish I had just picked up the phone.

To Michaels Family,I worked with Michael for a brief period at Osprey's Dominion Vineyard. That brief period, was one of the most enjoyable times of my life. Him and I would be behind the bar and all we would do was laugh. I said to him, you remind me so much of Robin Williams. He now lives forever in my heart. God Bless all of you and may Michael forever shine upon you.All my love, prayers and peace be with you. Sandi

I went to high school with Mike at Loyola. Although we did not travel in the same circles, he was one of those guys that you just gravitated towards. always smiling, always laughing, always gregarious. i think paul kissane's tribute says more than i could ever. but i guess the one thing impresses me most. although i had not seen or spoken to mike since high school, it was great to know that he never changed. when so many of us let the world change us, mike stayed the sme and changed the world around him.

As a teacher and coach at Loyola Academy it was with great sadness we received the news of losing one of our own on that tragic day. Mike was a terrific young man and will be missed. We pray each day for his family and for all those who have suffered a loss from this senseless act. Reading the tributes, especially Paul's has inspired me this evening. Thank you.

It sounds like Michael and all those around him enjoyed and celebrated life every single minute. May Michael's warmth, humor, positive attitude, life and love live on through everyone who was touched by his life. We are so very sorry for your loss of Michael. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Mark Lunden - Sorry about your brother, I heard about it at the recent Parrilli dinner. It was held at the White Eagle in Niles where the owner lost her daughter Vanessa Kolpak in WTC building 2. Both of these have changed me a little. (For the better) Talk to you soon.

I first met Michael when we were freshman at Loyola Academy. We were struggling in the same Algerbra class, but we also shared a common interest in sports. So we decided that we would take a leave from Mr.McMahon's Algerbra and head out to opening day at Wrigley Field in April of 1979. Leaving school without permission was one thing, but Mike said if we were going to go to the game it had to be in style. He arranged for box seats and we saw Dave Kingman whack 3 homeruns from the front row behind homeplate. From that day forward, Mike always stood out to me as a person who truly enjoyed "going the extra mile" and doing it first class. Through our high school and college years Mike and I also had inumerable memorable good times caddying out at Sunset Ridge Country Club in Northbrook,Illinois. The members always enjoyed Mike's charming ways and he always enjoyed their tips. Years have passed since those days, but I along with so many of Mike's friends from his youth on the NorthShore of Chicago could always count on a call from Lundo on our birthday. During those calls Mike would always remember one of the great events from our mutual past like going to Opening Day in 1979. Mike was a true friend who transended all social clicks and most importantly he was not afraid to be his outgoing gregarious self. He enjoyed it all and led by example by being a first class friend, husband, son, brother and father. Mike and his family will always be in my prayers and thoughts. I'll make sure and toast him at every Opening Day at Wrigley Field...from the box seats.

Mike and I went to school together for 12 years. We also spent about as much time in the Principal's Office together as anyone. I'll always remember him as someone who could make me laugh... and would be the first to laugh at my bad jokes.
