Thomas Langone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 29, 2001.
On the Job, Together
A neighboring volunteer fire company called the one in Roslyn, N.Y., for help on Thanksgiving 2000. A rescue specialist was needed to extricate a young man from a wrecked car. The company, and the driver, were lucky. Two rescue specialists, Peter and Thomas Langone, arrived and cut him loose.

In their time off, Firefighter Peter Langone and Police Officer Thomas Langone were leaders at the Roslyn Rescue Fire Company, training other volunteers in the skills they learned at work.

Peter Langone, 41, a driver with Engine Company 252 in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a specialty unit, was the "elder statesman" at the firehouse, according to Firefighter James O'Connor. He drove the truck and showed rookies the ropes, speaking bluntly at times. "He never beat around the bush," Firefighter O'Connor said. His wife, Terri, and his daughters Nikki, 9, and Karli, 5, were often seen around the firehouse, and they took weekend trips to the country. They were planning a family trip to Disney World this winter. He also liked to hunt, and in good years that meant venison stew in the firehouse.

Thomas Langone, 39, of Emergency Squad 10 in Brooklyn, went to Oklahoma City in 1995 to help with recovery efforts after the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. "His entire day went at a million miles an hour," a fellow officer said. "He didn't wait to be called." He also taught firefighting techniques for Nassau County, and was working toward a bachelor's degree from Empire State College's distance learning program so he could teach when he retired from the department.

With his wife, JoAnn; his daughter, Caitlin, 12; and his son, Brian, 10, Thomas Langone took a trip to Rhode Island last summer, touring mansions and enjoying the cliff walk in Newport.

Their jobs brought the brothers together. In 1990, the Roslyn volunteers went to the scene of the Avianca crash in Oyster Bay. In 1993, working for New York City, the brothers went to the World Trade Center bombing. On Sept. 11, they arrived separately not long before the twin towers collapsed.

To the entire Langone Family. Thomas supervised garden work for us in Manhasset. I had no idea he was a firefighter. His crew told me a month after the attacks that he had perished. I will always keep him in our prayers

We will never forget! Thank you for your service, sir!

Well, Thomas, it has been 17 years since you gave so selflessly. You gave everything for what you stood for. I've only known you for 7 years now, I just wish I could have met you some other way than through your death. I pray for your family a lot. I hope they know how much love surrounds them and how thankful so many in our country are for the sacrifice the Langone family gave on that awful day. God bless you and all those who lost their lives on 9/11.

Well, yesterday marked 15 years. I still think of you and your family since I was given your name 5 years ago in church to pray for you and the entire Langone family. Not just on the anniversary, but often. God bless your family, and thank you again for your sacrifice. This year, if your able to up there, can you talk to the big guy and let him know the rest of us down here are struggling to remember the unity, love, and solidarity we felt for and with one another after that awful day 15 years ago? We need His help again for sure.

Today, marks fifteen years since the attacks on 9/11! It is still, so vivid, in our memories! Each of my family members, can remember where they were, at that exact moment in time! That day, and on every Sept. 11th; we are all New Yorkers! To Mr. Thomas Langone, thank you, again, sir, for your love, of others, and your sacrifice! To the Langone family, my prayers, for your continued healing!

Watched the recent "children of 9/11" programme in the UK and wanted to just pass on my condolences to Mr Langone's family.

Like so many on that fatal day he was a true hero saving lives.

Wish Mrs Langone and her 2 children well for the future.

To the family of Thomas Langone: It is an honor that I am able to leave a message in your guest book acknowledging the incomprable service, duty, dedication and bravery that your Tommy so selflessly showed on that dreadful day. I am no stranger to dangerous jobs-my husband is a police officer and has been for 16 years and my father and brother are both (Houston) firefighters. I know all too well the dangers that they face and the worry that our families feel knowing their jobs are what they are-but they wouldnt have it any other way! Every September 11th, my husband and I wear bracelets that we purchased long ago with the name of Thomas on it and the NYPD badge. I am honored and proud to wear that bracelet adorning his name to show our unwaivering pride and respect we have for him! I wish peace and love for your family and may he rest in peace with the Lord forever.

I received your name yesterday in church. I have and will continue to pray for your family. I googled you, that's what we do now a days to learn about people; and I read about you and your brother, and your family. I am honored to be the person who was given your name, to get to know someone who gave of themselves so selflessly. God bless you, Thomas Langone, I hope to get to shake your hand someday when I get where you are.

From 1st grade in St Marys to seeing you at the renaissance tennis club, the one memory that sticks out the most, is the day you brought in your scrapbook of rescues at the tennis club and how thrilled you were in describing each and everyone of them. I still have a tag with your name Thomas that I got after 9-11. Thinking of you, your brother Peter and your families today. When I go to the memorial site, I will look for both your names.... I think the waterfalls are very appropriate to represent all the tears that have been shed for you and the other innocent victims of this cowardly act. You and Peter were the brave heros that day risking your lives to save others. We will remember, rest in peace Thomaa & Peter!

My niece and I are from Hanover,Pa where our local elementary school was the site for our communities Healing Field. The community put out 3,000 flags to honor the memory of Sept. 11. We found Thomas Langone's flag and read his story and decided to look him up and know him. We wish we had a home adress to send a letter to the family, but this is what we found. Much love and thanks to this truly remarkable, heroic man. May God bless him and his surviving family!

I must share this with The Langone Family and Friends.. I am a 911 Operator in Phoenix AZ. On the 1yr anniversary of 9-11, we in Police and Fire climbed our downtown Chase Tower building of 65 floors in honor of those lost on 9-11-01. We all received a name tag of one of those who lost their lives. I received the name "Thomas Langone". I prayed for him and all who were lost. I carried his name up the 65 floors... Now ,10 years later Ive kept the arm band bearing his name. The other night I happen to be flipping through the tv stations and stopped to watch "Children of 911". They profiled a few children and familes who lost a loved one on that horrible day. I was listening to the stories then I heard "Thomas Langone" family. I sat up straight and froze.. of all of the families to profile- he was one. I got goose bumps and became emotional. They showed a clip of a home movie of him with his kids. It broke my heart. So, this year, I will be walking in Memory of "Thomas Langone" ,and all lost on that horrific day. I now have a face and a voice to the name tag "Thomas Langone" .. I will walk proudly with his name and face displayed, it will be my honor.

To those who knew Daddy and worked with him, thank you for the stories you have shared - I wish I could know them all. Your kind and heartfelt words still provide some comfort ten years later.

April 9, 2011

A funny story about Tommy and his partner....I worked in the 114Pct from 1992-1998. One night on a 4x12 , it was Super Bowl Sunday, late in the evening my partner and I got a call for a male locked inside of a bowling alley. When we arrived we found the bowling alley locked up tight. A passerby saw the police infront of the bowling alley and notified the owner who lived around the corner. While we were waiting for the owner to respond with the key, Truck# 10 happened to drive bye and asked if we needed assistance. The ESU cop who asked....was Tommy Langone. Tommy along with his partner immediatley stopped and rendered assistance. Tommy was able to open up the fire gate and as he lifted it up much to our surprise was a male standing inside of the closed/locked up bowling alley. It turned out that the Superbowl that night was a complete blowout. The male went into the bathroom during halftime. When he finished up his business he exited the bathroom and discovered that everyone had left and that the bowling alley was closed up for the night, locked up tight. The male in the bathroom actually called "911" from within to get out of the locked up bowling alley. We gained access into the bowling alley confirmed the male's story and with the owners complete authorization and permission....he opened up several bowling lanes for us. There we all were in full uniform .....I was standing next to Tommy in his lane....he tossed his ball down the lane and ....STRIKE!! I couldn't believe it ...there we all were in full uniform bowling against each other.....a memory I will never forget about Tommy. He was a great ESU cop....a great man....and in my opinion .....a great bowler! God Bless Brother! You'll Always be in My Thoughts and Prayers!

Tommy,

It's been 8 years and the sorrow has not subsided. I enjoyed working with you and learning from you. You knew your job and did it better than anyone, and certainly faster. I miss the great times we had together and sharing our passions together. ESU, Fire and family. No one will ever know the bond we shared. You were the true "King" of all Rescues!!
I left ESU, it just would not be the same with out you and the rest of our fallen brothers. I am still doing the fire chief gig, I couldn't give it all up. I pray and think about you often as you know. God Bless you Tommy Langone.

Tommy,
It seems like yesterday I was with you, responding to an auto accident at GC Rd & IU Willets. I was feeling cool because I was riding with the Chief. Then you announced to other units that I was riding in your vehicle. I was not worthy of that recognition. I was truly humbled when in your prescence. I had looked forward to what I could have lerned from you. Peace Brother.

November 7, 2006

I operated a store in Bethpage, NY and had these two men who would stop by and look at the tools in the store and shoot the breeze. They never said what they did for a living. This went on for about a year.

My store closed and I was transfered to the Flushing, New York store as manager. Several days into my transfer, a large NYPD truck pulled up in from of the store and I couldn't see who it was. Then all of a sudden, two Policemen came through the door and announced their arrival. It was Paul Talty and his partner Tommy Langone. I was surprised to see them and asked why they hadn't told me they were cops. In reality, it didn't matter.

They visited on a regular basis and we spent many hours talking and having great conversation.

On September 11th, I knew something beyond imagination had happened. I knew quite a few individuals who worked downtown and knew that all hands would be involved in the rescue and recovery. I found all were safe except for my friends Paul and Tommy. Both were listed as missing.

Tommy and Paul will forever be remembered in my heart and soul. May God keep them safe and by his side.

To Tommy's wife and family, I may not know or feel your pain, but I understand as I have my own. Be strong with your faith and look towards the future remembering the great times.

I received Tom's name as part of a 9-11 Remembrence Service at my children's All School Mass. Each class took 60 names and made a chain that was placed on the altar before Mass. As each person left Mass, they were asked to take a slip of paper that had the rest of the heros of 9-11 printed on them and were asked to pray for them and their families. Each child also received a name. Some of the teachers gave the students time during class to look up and find out about the people they were now praying for. I have Tom's name on the dash of my car where I can see him everyday, several times a day. May God bless all of us.

I am a senior at a small Christian School in Grants Pass, Oregon. We held a special chapel on September 11th and a speaker came and handed out little cards with the names and pictures of those who lost their lives in the tragedy on September 11th, 2001. I randomly chose Thomas Langone's card. I was searching the internet and happened to find myself looking for information on Mr. Langone. I feel that I know him and his family better through the information that I have obtained. I have been praying for his family, friends and loved ones that he left behind! May the Lord bless you and keep you as you endure these hardships!

Dear JoAnne and Family,

When I think of the E men lost on 9/11/01, I try to think of all the names that John mentioned in his 14 years in ESU. The name of Tommy Langone is a vivid recollection. If John had survived the event I know how upset he would be about Tommy. I guess I'm upset in his place.

The names of the 14 men lost from ESU read to me as the ESU All Star Team.I pray of them and our families every day. I will never forget.

We thank Thomas and Peter for dedicating their lives to rescue, protect, and care for others as firefighters. Such devotion comes with brave, warm and caring hearts full of love for their fellow man. face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
