Vin,
Tomorrow you would have turned 62. It hard to believe that you have been gone from this world for 22 years. I think of you often and remember all the good times we had together. I especially remember the fun times we had with your family. So many fond memories. If there is an after life, I know that you, your dad and my dad are hanging out laughing and sharing a few beers. You were always the life of the party or a least the craziest. Miss ya, Slick

I never met you Vincent, but you came from my hometown. When you passed I got an honor bracelet with your name and I have had it for twenty years. I don’t wear it as much as I used to, but today is the day to pull it out of the drawer and remember your legacy and commitment.

I met Vincent in 1994 when he owned and operated a bar in Flushing, Queens. My good friends from Queens College lived above this bar and we would always run into Vin and his partner, exchanging laughs and pleasantries. Vinny even let me and my friend Leo, bartend one evening. I was absolutely devastated to learn about Vinny's passing in 2001. He will forever hold a special place in my heart, as I know he was a truly special person. My sincerest condolences to his beautiful family. He is the epitome of the word, "hero".

I travelled from Australia to climb the WTC Tower 4 in the NYC Memorial Stair Climb on the 19th of March, 2017. After completing my initial climb of the 72 floors in full firefighter kit, we learned that there were many more names of fallen heroes yet to be carried to the top.
Without hesitation, many of us returned to the ground floor, suited up and climbed again. This time I was given the tally for Vincent. It was an honour to ensure that he was taken to the top that day and I looked for his photo in the stairwell on the way up and paused to reflect and pay my respect before continuing with my journey to the 72nd floor.
I went to the reflection pools after the climb to visit his name and also called in to Ladder 5 to say hello to his brothers that were on duty.

To the Giammona family, I'm not from NY, but have relatives in Westbury, one of whom died year after 9/11/01. When driving from the grave site, we went past the area where 9/11 victims were buried. A v. strong word popped into my head, "BIRTHDAY". The image was so strong, I returned to the area the next day and looked at the victims headstones and there was Vinnie. It brought tears to my eyes, and I think of him and his enormous courage, compassion and utter selflessness every anniversary of that horrific attack on our people. May God keep Vinnie and his friends and family in his infinite and constant love. God bless and peace.

To the Giammona family. I will once again be honoring Vicent this year by participating in the Denver Memorial Stair Climb on September 11th (denverstairclimb.com). It is a memorial stair climb of a high rise building in downtown Denver. Only 343 firefighters are allowed to participate. The building is 55 stories tall and I will climb it twice. This will represent the total number of stories, 110 in one of the WTC buildings. As always I will carry a picture of Vicent, as I do on a daily basis in my firefighter gear. This is a small token from me to honor your beloved family member. My you always remeber, your family memeber and all the others will never be forgotten.

Giammona family,
My name is Ken Maine and I'm currently a career firefighter in Brighton, Colorado (just north of Denver). Every year for the past four years, Battalion Chief Dan McGrail of the Denver Fire Dept has held a 9/11 memorial stair climb. The climb consists of climbing the Quest Building in downtown Denver, which is 55 stories tall, twice to equal the number of floors in the World Trade Center Buildings. We climb in full gear, with packs and equipment. There are only 343 firefighters allowed to make this climb each year. Guys on job from all over Colorado and Wyoming where in attendance this year. We even had a couple of retired FDNY guys on hand who now reside Colorado, one who was a survivor of 9/11. This year Chief McGrail handed out to each firefighter participating, a picuture of a FDNY member who passed on 9/11. On 9-11-2008 I was honored and fortunate enough to have received a photo of Lt. Vincent Giammona of Ladder 5. Together we made the climb, with the photo of Vincent around my neck. The presence of your loved one was felt the whole climb. After the climb, we are allowed to spend a few moments to reflect on the roof of the Qwest Building. This year was much more of an emotional time for me. The connection that was made for me through the picture of Vincent brought me to my knees. Many tears were shed. Once I was able to get myself together, I prayed for Vincent, his wife, his children and the rest of his family and friends.
This is not the only connection I have to the FDNY family. My Uncle is a Chiefs Aid with Battalion 18. He has been on the job for 23 years.
I grew up and lived the better part of my life in North Jersey (Bergen County) in a town called Upper Saddle River. I was also a volunteer firefighter in Ramsey, New Jersey for 9 years. I've met many FDNY guys on the job and retired. I spent time visiting Ladder 4, Ladder 38, Engine 88, Engine 45, Ladder 58, were I've had family and friends.
Again, I just wanted to let your family know how honored I am to have been given a photo Vincent. This photo will hang in my locker at the house for the rest of my career. I truly believe that I now have an angel with me on every call I go on. I was able learn somethings about Vincent from what I could find on the internet. He was special and one of a kind husband, father and friend. I can only hope to become half the man he was.
I do remember, we remember and we will never forget 343.
Thank you for your time,
Ken Maine
If you would like to write me back that would be appreciated. I would love to learn more about your loved one. If not, that's ok. Just remeber Vincent is still helping people.
God Bless

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, ""I welcome you.""
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......""My day was not in vain.""
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My wife wanted a middle name of James but she was druged up when the nurses came in and asked us what we were naming him. I took them aside and said quietly, "Brayden Vincent." I snuck one in for ya brother! She woke up and it was too late. Ya snooze ya loose. Theresa if you read this I have a picture of Vinnie Jr. for you but I lost your email. Email me at [email protected], you gotta see his baby picture. I keep Vinnie's picture in my wallet and he's overlooking my desk in my office. I stopped at his station last time I was in the city, not a day goes by I don't think about him, he keeps me going.
