Thomas Mahon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 2, 2001.
Moving for Shay

After 14 years in Manhattan, Thomas Mahon packed his bags and headed home. Though the big city still thrilled him, he was no longer the carefree, single guy who moved here to be a financial broker. The oldest of five children, he had married and had a young daughter of his own. He wanted his daughter, Shay, to grow up in Oyster Bay, on Long Island, the way that he had, with playgrounds, beaches and family sprinkled within a few blocks. On warm, summer evenings, Thomas, 37, who worked at Cantor Fitzgerald in 1 World Trade Center, always hurried home to take out his girl. He pulled out his mountain bike, strapped Shay into a child seat, and glided through the neighborhood. He stopped every so often for relatives and friends. ''Tom took it day by day,'' said his brother, Gerald Mahon. ''I think his grand plan was to create a good life for his daughter.''

I did not know Tom but on 9-11-22 at our church (St. John's of Lattingtown) we randomly picked names from a basket of people in our area that lost their lives on 9-11-01 and I selected Tom's name and read it aloud along with his age and that he worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. I pray for Tom. I hope you know we never forget any of the people who lost there lives on that tragic day. God Bless you and your family Tom.

To Thomas's family my most sincere condolences, your lives were changed forever. Our small town has been honoring the 9/11 victims by asking the community to stop, you're given a flag which you're shown where to insert it on the lawn(all symetrical), and you're given a certificate with a name. Thomas sounded like a true family man, a man who loved spending time w/ all his family, especially his little girl. I know your hearts will hurt a little more this Sunday, 9/11/11. You are in my thoughts & prayers.

Sugar in the Sea
And they too were lifted up
As the promise always said
And the labels that belonged Are laid to rest and gone
And what happened in the glistening Was the gentle sweet relief
Now brilliant tiny stars On the gentle midnight reef
And thoughts and remembrances Like fire all a glow
Now imprints for our hearts to hold Of them that had to go
No solitude or singleness No searching for the calm
No tears and labors emptiness
No hatred to disarm
Desire and all restlessness
Now sugar in the sea
And so, my friend, we wait behind Till we can be so free

I lost my cousin Tom Holohan FF Engine 6 on Sept. 11th...and was truly saddened and shocked to have lost a school friend. St. Dom's was a wonderful place to be and I can only say that a class without the shenanigan of Tommy Mahon and John McEvoy was a class without laughter and fun. And at our reunion last year it was wonderful to see John but we were all saddened not to have the smiling face of big Tom as well.

My prayers for the Mahon family and please continue to find the strength to share his smiles and laughter and love with his darling daughter...may she always know his love.

Tom,

Whilst hearing your name read for the second time this year I still cannot bear the fact that I will not run into you in the city going home to long island. I remember you when you were a young guy in training to be a broker carousing around Manhattan. I always enjoyed working with you as you always had time to talk and listen. Whatever we didn't finish at work we would continue uptown going to catch the LIRR. The one thing that stands out in my mind was when you had told me of moving back to long island and all the details about moving back to your old neighborhood. Then the next thing I knew it was you had told me you were having a baby. I remember how proud you were and how much you could not wait to get home to see your liitle baby girl. I will say with a heavy heart that I am proud to have known you and I hope that one day we will share some laughs again.

Sincerely,

Your Sister-in-Law

Sister Mary Ann Cody, IHM

April 21, 2002

When I look back and reflect on my thirty-three years

ministering in education, there are many young men and

women whose faces come before me. Some I remember or

see more clearly than others, but all are there, woven

into the tapestry of my life. They have shown me both

strength and weakness, complacency with the status-quo

and a persistent questioning of what might yet be.

With some I have walked the journey of illness and

weakness of mind or body. With some I have had the

privilege to be present for their passage into the

newness of eternal life. But for the majority, it has

been the daily journey of growing "in wisdom, age and

grace" that has been their gift to my life.

On September 11, 2001, the taking for granted of the

quiet and resilient majority became for me a

gut-wrenching experience of pain, sorrow and joy. I

was privileged to have known five young men who were

so tragically taken from us on that day. Each in his

own way was, and continues to be, a part of my life.

Timothy Byrne and Thomas Mahon were graduates of St.

Dominic High School in Oyster Bay. Tom was married

and the father of a little girl. He was a quiet boy

who had grown into a husband and father, rooted in

faith and a simplicity of living he had learned from

his parents. Timmy had assumed a role of leadership

in his family of 10 brothers and sisters. His father

had died while he was in college and Timmy, who had

never married, quickly gravitated to being the one

called upon.

Michael D'Auria, Joseph Doyle and John Tierney were

graduates of St. Joseph-by-the-Sea High School on

Staten Island. Mike and John were firefighters. John

had just finished his shift and jumped on the truck as

it pulled out of the station. Michael was a rookie

who had not yet graduated from the Fire Academy. He

had taken up painting as a way of expressing his

spiritual side. Joseph had gone to college on a

baseball scholarship and had just begun his career at

Cantor Fitzgerald.

In these days, when the importance of WHO we are

speaks so much more clearly than WHAT we do or say, I

share with you five young men, vibrant with

possibilities, who are part of my life. They speak of

the fragility of life and the depth of the human

spirit. They remind me that the choices we make in

life, determine WHO we become. I celebrate their

lives, and I thank God for the threads of gold they

have woven in the tapestry of my life.

My heart and prayers go out to Beth and Shay and all of Tom's family -

I am so sorry for your loss. I'm an old classmate of Tom's from St. Dominic's - I remember him as a very sweet, funny, smart and goofy guy! I also remember one time when he was spelling his name, and he pronounced the letter "h" like a true irishman "right off the boat"! He was embarrassed, but I loved it - all of my grandparents were from Ireland and I guess he picked up the pronunciation from his Mom - sweet memory...

This year will be our 20th High School reunion - we will miss Tommy.

God Bless.
