James White Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 3, 2001.
Braving the Bulls
James Patrick White was sitting over a beer in a bar in Hoboken, N.J., with two high school buddies when they got the idea. They would take off for Spain and run with the bulls at Pamplona.

The night before the run they drank a lot of beer and were so worried they would oversleep and miss the bulls that they slept on the street in their clothes. Somehow, they survived the stampede. "It was very scary," said Tom Kane, one of the friends. "We kind of leaned on each other to get the courage to do it."

Mr. White, 34, a Cantor Fitzgerald bond broker, was the oldest of five children, three of them boys. He played varsity tennis in high school in Hightstown, N.J., skiied, rode mountain bikes and ran the New York City Marathon three times, twice with his brother Mike. It took him 4 hours, 40 minutes the first time. Then four hours. "The third time we were lazy," said Mike, who had run one year with their brother Greg. "Our time wasn't so good. But we finished."

I visited New York with my grandsons in 2015 July. My grandson's name is James Patrick and my last name is White. We walked to these beautiful reflecting pools and stopped in front of the name of James Patrick White. I said to my boys what are the odds of us stopping in front of this name. I felt a chill run thru me. It was Patrick who I never knew coming to thank me for coming and asking me to never forget. I never will. As we near the coming 20 year anniversary of this day, I want to extend my love to his family, and tell them he thanked me for coming. I will never forget as long as I live. One week later when I returned to California I received a call that my brother in South Africa, Glenn White had passed away. If he had passed away before I went to New York I would never have gone. God works in funny ways, he waited until we had visited this great city, paid our respect to all the lives lost, visited the One World that had just opened and stood for 3 hours to take the elevator to the top, and then visit this magnificent 9/11 Museum. I will never forget that day as long as I live.

As you often do, you came to visit me in my dreams last night. Usually when this happens, it is during special dates for us. It's been quite some time since you visited, and last night's dream came as a surprise. You always did like surprises! This time of year was typically when we would make plans to see each other during the summer. While visiting me one summer, you asked if you could have my heart: a piece of it will always be with you. After all of this time you still hold a special place in my heart, Jimmy. I guess that's why we never really said goodbye. I know it would make you smile to know that I live a very happy life, Jimmy. It's full of laughter, family, friends, and adventure! I'm so blessed. Until we meet again...

On Wednesday June 17, 2015, I visited New York with my 2 grandsons and their dad. The very first thing we wanted to do was go to the 9/11 Museum. We took the subway down from our hotel in midtown Manhattan and walked to the first reflecting pool and touched the name in front of us, it was James Patrick White. I went cold, my grandson is James Patrick and my name is White. It was like your son and brother had reached out and touched my shoulder to thank us for coming and not forgetting. While in the museum we looked him up, saw his picture and then went to the computer to check on him. We were all deeply moved, I wanted to share this with you as what are the odds if this happening. He is a lovely man and it is a moment we will never forget. Love Wendy White. [email protected]

I should have written this years ago. On the 10th anniversary, I wanted to remember a fellow HHS graduate, Jimmy White (I was Class of '87). He was a good man, and a much loved and respected oldest sibling.

May god bless the White family, a family I have always been fond of, back to the days of our childhood.

I am watching the reading of the 9/11 victims names and yours came up. I am assuming the two people I saw were your mother and father. They were applauding at your name and had a large sign. They are still there loving you, as am I. Thank you for sacrificing yourself, for my future. You were definetely a hero, not because of how passed, but because of how you lived. Rest in Peace Mr. White.

This year, on 9/11/04, our city had a display of over 3,000 American flags set up at our downtown park to represent those who lost their lives on 9/11/01. They called it the "Healing Field" and it was absolutely breathtaking. On each flag was a name and the public was invited to purchase a flag. We purchased one with James Patrick White's name on it. We just brought it home after the weekend ceremony was over and are proudly displaying it in front of our house. We plan on doing this every year for a week on 9/11 thru 9/18. We just wanted to let James' family know that even thought we never knew him, he is known clear across the country and will always be remembered for his sacrafice. We wish the family peace and comfort. Bill & Donell Weekley, Vacaville, California

Although I didn't have the priveledge of knowing Jim, I *do* have the honor of thinking of him and his family every day. On Sept. 11, 2002, my church issued the individual names of all Sept 11 victims on small cards. I selected his name. I keep this card posted on my PC at work...and I will continue to pray for his friends and family who've endured such a terrible loss.

Jim and I were members of the Hightstown High Class of '85. I was also on the Varsity Tennis Team with Jim and in several classes together. My fondest memories of Jim are the times we had on the bus we took to our matches. His laughter and goof-ball jokes/stories he would tell would always keep us smiling. He was successful in the classroom as well as the playing fields. From the tributes I've read here, I know that he continued to lead his life in a similar manner. I was thinking of Jim today as I stood at the WTC site and heard them read his name wishing he was still with us. I will miss you Jim and I look forward to seeing you again on the Stadium Court in the sky. I wish his family and friends my best wishes. God Bless.

I will be wearing a badge in remembrance and in honor of James Patrick White on September 11, 2002, while singing as a member of the Mozart "rolling" Requiem, performed in Raleigh, NC by the Choral Society of Durham, the Duke Chapel Choir, the Chapel Hill Community Chorus, and the North Carolina Symphony. I wanted to learn more about him than just his name, and I am heartened by your words here. I will pray for him and his family.

Carolyn Vander Weit

September 8, 2002

I did not know Jim personally, but from the stories his mom told at work, I sure felt like I knew him. I will never forget the horror of almost a year ago when I called Joan on 9-11 to say hello, not knowing that Jim worked in one of the towers. When Joan got on the phone and heard me, she started crying and when I asked her what was wrong, all she said was "Jimmy". Talk about feeling like the biggest idiot in the world! It was a long time before I was comfortable talking with Joan again.

My heart was hurting for the entire family as I know how wonderfully close they are. When Al and Joan stopped in Charlotte for lunch on their way back north one day, and I saw how they were getting on with life, I felt a little better.

Joan, Al and all of the rest of you - you are constantly in my thoughts and prayers.

God Bless You All,

With Much Love,

Carolyn

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
