Dennis Carey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 3, 2001.
Living, and Cooking, Fully
Dennis M. Carey loved to cook. The family has every issue of Bon Appetit magazine going back 15 years, said his wife, Jean, "and you couldn't improvise with the ingredients. He had to use exactly what the recipe called for."

And he worked hard as a New York City firefighter. He joined the Fire Department almost two decades ago, and seven years ago began working with Hazardous Materials Company 1 in Maspeth, Queens. Mr. Carey's body was found, along with those of 15 of his colleagues, at the World Trade Center on Oct. 2.

When he was not on the job, Mr. Carey, 51, loved to travel with his wife and their two children, Nicole, 25, and Dennis Jr., 22. "We lived," Jean Carey said a day after his funeral. "A lot of people who pass on, they say about them that they lived two lives. We lived three. We've done everything with our children, traveled from Maine to Florida, went camping, went to every amusement park you can think of."

She continued: "I'm with him since I'm 17, and I'm 48 now. He was a pleaser. He spoiled me. He did for me. We had a great life. I'm so grateful to have it."

I am the daughter of a firefighter who learned my dad could die on 9/11, as a small 2nd grader. Our family needed to do something to feel like we were helping our IAFF union family. In 2002 when IAFF made copper bracelets for our 343 fallen heroes our family got 4 for us and one four our priest, Father Judge, obviously. I picked FF Dennis M Carey of FDNY HazMat 1. I picked FF Carey because my dad was a HazMat officer. I was terrified my dad was going to go to ground zero. For the past 18 years I have prayed for the Carey family. I have googled and seen Dennis M Carey is a Senior. I hope his Jr is living a life similar to mine. Living our dreams your dad had for you. I don't know if y'all will ever see this, but I want you to know I've been praying for you all since I got this bracelet so long ago. You will forever be in my prayers and a part of my IAFF family. ❤

My wife and I were just visiting Oranjasted, Aruba in March 2015 when we visited Eden Beach aka Spice Beach, there at the beach was a shade covered hut....on the pole inside the hut, was the most wonderful memorial for Mr. Dennis Carey...We cried reading the memorial plaque, and said some prayers for his soul and for his family and friends....it was so nice to see his name remembered and honored....we took photos of his name, the plaque and the sun hut.....if anyone from his family or friends would like the photos, I would be happy to email them all 9 pics, to you Please email me at brianhollisterguy @ gmail dot com

This memorial was so unique. I don't know if the Carey family knows about this Aruba memorial.....but I felt it important to share it with you.

May he rest in peace. His bravery will never be forgotten by me or

I am a high school teacher in Haverhill, MA. Our school will be having an outdoor ceremony tomorrow morning to honor the lives lost on Sep 11. Names of lives lost that day were randomly posted on classroom doors throughout our school. Dennis's name was posted on my door. So, I have read and shared a few things about him with my students. We will proudly acknowledge his name card during tomorrow's ceremony. As difficult as this time may be, I know that Dennis's friends and family will be honored to know about this.

Uncle Dennis, I have many great memories of you and if I mentioned them all I would be writing my first novel! There are two that always stick out in my mind that are definitely worth mentioning. The first was when I was learning to drive and you let me drive your car to blockbuster video in Wantagh. We were driving down Jane Street and midway down your block was a stop sign that obviously I didn't see and went right through it and I remember you laughing and saying, "Christie, you just drove through a stop sign." You laughed the whole way there. My second favorite memory was my 21st birthday in Atlantic City. You, Nicole and my father were sitting at the black jack table and I was watching from behind, and you made me sit down and taught me how to play. We had a lot of laughs that weekend. Unfortunately your life ended way too soon, but not a day goes by that I don't think of you, your smile, your laugh or the twinkle in your eyes. And although you're not physically here to see your family and your amazing and beautiful grandchildren your love and light shines through them everyday!

The LiVigni family will never forget Dennis & Jeannie and their children! When they first got married they lived upstairs from me for quite some time and he was the funniest guy ya ever want to meet! He always had My Mom and all of us in stitches! I worked for him before he became a firefighter in his roofing company and he was the best boss you could want! He would give me an advance on my pay and NEVER take it out when I got paid. I would remind him and he would just smile and say don't worry about it. He always put my friends to work even when he had no roofing jobs. He would make them clean the shop or do just about anything just to give them a days pay! His kids were his pride and joy and I'm sure he is watching over his grandchildren and family as he always did. Dennis you will always be remembered not just on 9/11 I think of you so much I can't explain it. I always looked up to you as an older brother and your sacrifice for our country will never ever be forgotten. Jeannie and your kids will always be a part of me as will you! R.I.P. Big D you left us too soon but you left a part of you in all of us and your legacy will live on forever! With all our Love to you Jeannie and your family! The LiVigni's

My friend, my neighbor, my "family"... Dennis was a great husband, father, friend. Extremely kind, loving, thoughtful, caring and generous. A family man who enjoyed life -- traveling, dining, entertaining his family and friends is what Dennis enjoyed most. This loss of life is deeply felt by all who knew him. The world is a darker place with the loss of this man, firefighter, hero. The tragic events of that dreadful morning will forever linger in the minds and hearts of all of America but mostly New Yorkers who endured the brunt of the sucker punch dealt to us by the evil that lurks around us. For those who didn't know Dennis personally I'll tell you that he loved his wife Jeanne with all of his being. His two children were his heart and soul. He was a dedicated family man who worked to provide all that he possibly could to better the lives of his family. Unfortunately, the good do die young. Never forgotten and forever missed...God bless your soul, Big D ox

I met Dennis at the National Fire Academy in Emitsburg Maryland many years ago. He was one of the nicest men I have ever met and very generous. Since I was from a small city in Louisiana (Bossier City)He offered to bring me home between class break on the weekend to show me around. I had another obligation and couldnt go. After I told him I could not go,later that class he tore off the back of a New York newspaper add that had the Manhattan skyline and wrote on it"Ian this is New York, Come see me" and signed it Dennis. I regret not being able to go to this day!
Jeanne, Nichole and Dennis Jr.I'm thinking about you all today and will continue Praying for you.

During those times I just remember how silly Dennis was and how much he loved Nicole and 'Little' Dennis the way my Father (Frankie Dee) loves his girls:). It is nice to get updates on how you and your fam are doing from my Dad every year after the picnics. You Are so strong and Dennis would have been so proud of you:). Know that we listen for his name every year and think of him as a true hero. I will think about you tomorrow and know that each year for the rest of my life I will do the same:). Peace and Love to you always!!

Dear Dennis,

When I first wrote about you it was very hard (it still is) and I tried to let people what an exceptional person you were, even if 9/11 never happened. Now I kind of feel like by writing about the happenings in our lives, I am speaking to you. So here are the updates.

Jeanne is still not the same although she puts up one hell of a

front, you would be very proud of all the good things she has done, and how she commemorates you. Dennis just got engaged to "Cindy", you would love her, she is sweet, pretty and an animal lover like you.

Nicole is still our delicate flower.

She is like a rose that grew up with a strong foundation and thorns to protect her.Now that she is in full bloom are petals are becoming delicate and needs sun and water to sustain her. (Hawaii)She has a boyfriend Michael who helped through

some hard times. She is a beautiful young women and still finding herself. She has a deep soul and sense of the spiritual

side of life. You would enjoy her even more now and She still misses you deeply. You were her foundation.

Jason is getting married to Amanda in October, another pretty,

smart and outgoing girl, I am sure you would like. Johnny and Marianne

are expecting there first baby any

day. I still remember us driving to their apartment the day after the wedding. We were all so happy.

Michael is in Nassau Community and following, I'm afraid the route of Dennis and John, In other words having a slow start. He wears HAZMAT

shirts constantly and misses you too.

John closed the video store and is trying to make a living as a painter/contractor, boy could we use your help now.

Dennis, Joan passed away last June,

I hope somehow you Larry and her are together.

Well I guess that's all for now.

Jeanne is in Aruba with Marilyn and Freddy and Debbie. I'm sure you are like always, there with her.

LOVE ALWAYS

Antoinette - We all still love and miss you. Oh you would be very proud of Dennis he is working with Audio equipment and loves it. He is very good at what he does. Dennis is a man now and comes through for Jeanne whenever she needs him, so does Nicole.

Jeanne has inherited (through osmosis) a lot of your spirit and we have shared many sad/happy times together because of you.
