Stephen Adams Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 4, 2001.
'An 18th-Century Man'
It was not always easy for Stephen Adams. He had majored in philosophy at college, but could not figure out what he wanted to do professionally. His tastes were from another time; his greatest interest a form of ritual English dance with hankies, sticks and swords.

"He was an 18th-century man," said his wife, Jessica Murrow, a musician, who met her husband, who was 51, at this kind of ritual dance, known as morris dance. She had journeyed to Marlboro College in Vermont to accompany a group of dancers on a drum, but had left her drumstick at home. "Someone said to ask Steve. He'd have one." He did.

"Steve loved Irish poetry and James Joyce and old English ballads," she said. "He had very old-fashioned values. He believed in being honorable, honest and loyal. He forgot to put himself first. His career faltered. Making money and work frustrated him."

It was only recently, Ms. Murrow said, that her husband found himself professionally.

A graduate of the French Culinary Institute, he had been named beverage manager at Windows on the World and was on the road to becoming a sommelier. "It was the first time he had a job where he was appreciated and happy."

I'm just thinking about Steve on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. I only got to know him briefly, but have many good memories. He introduced me to the Cathedral of St John The Divine in NYC, which I make sure to visit whenever in town, as well as a great Cuban breakfast restaurant, and the art of finding excellent Chinese food in NY. He was a very kind man, a great cook and wonderful with cats! I hope the next adventure was a great one.

Stephen, a happy feeling to know you found your nitch in life but also sad that it was taken from you. You'd be in your 60s now, would you still be working? Probably so, since it was something you were appreciated at. Didn't know you Stephen but I'm sad to know your dream was taken from you.

To Steve's friends and family:

It is perhaps for myself that I write this two years after that awful day in an attempt to make some sense from a senseless tragedy. I knew Steve from Marlboro College where we attended some classes together.

Steve would always go to extra effort to prepare an individual breakfast for me. He was an excellent cook and a most gracious host. When I think of Steve I remember him standing in the doorway between the kitchen and the dining room watching to see if anyone needed anything else and rarely enjoying the fruits of his own labours with the rest of us.

He was a very nice man and a very good person.

Each person's life affects so many others and our time on this small blue planet is so short that no act of kindness is ever wasted.

Thank you for your kindness, Steve.

You have not been forgotten.

Jessica:

As a student at Marlboro College(class of '86), I had the good fortune to share some of that marvellous experience with Stephen.

I will never forget his smile and warmth. He was a great cook, rustling up the best omlettes anywhere, and a dedicated student. He had so many talents and interests.

I was very sorry to hear of Stephen's loss and admire your strength and courage throughout this difficult year. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you and your family.

Dear family and friends of Stephen Adams,

I did not know Stephen, although by reading some of his memorials I know that he was greatly loved. My name is Nora and i go to a highschool in milwaukee, WI. my highschool decided that in honor of the one year anniversary of September 11 we would each get a name of a victim. i received Stephen's name. i cannot say that i feel your pain and suffering, because quite frankly i dont think anyone could. but i can say that i am praying for Mr. Adams and his family in friends. i hope that after a year the pain may start to recede bit by bit. i know that you will never fully recover in any means. i dont think anyone in your position could. but dont go through the pain and suffering alone. i know that when i am feeling that there is nothing in the world that will make me feel better and then i turn to a friend, i do feel better. crying is good, it makes you feel better. Stephen Adams will not be forgotten and he is now, i'm sure a happy man in heaven. Here are some quotes that i feel are appropriate:

"We are each of us angels with only one wing, and we can only fly by embracing one another."

"And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years."

with much love,

~Nora~

I met Steve at the Marlboro Morris Ale in 1984. He taught me how to eat raw oysters and wash them down with Guinness. A few years later, he let me stay at his place when I was in town for a dance workshop. I met Steve again various times at Pinewoods Camp, where we strove to improve and expand our English dance skills. My morris team danced to honor Steve, and his old team mate Chris, at sunset on Halloween 2001.

Dear Ms. Morrow, It has taken me to long to send you this note and I am sorry. I do not know if you remember me, but I am the person who runs the bike store on 110th street. Every day I have a quiet moment in the store, or if I recount the days immediately after the towers came down, I will always remember that you stopping by the store with a friend, on the bike you brought from us that summer to have it checked. I remember you bringing your husband down to the store check out the bike before purchasing it. At the time you dropped in I was getting ready to head back downtown to the towers when you popped in. After we conducted some business you told me that your husband was missing. I am writng you now hoping that you are doing ok. I think about the events of that day and the days immediatly after, all the time; and when I am in thought, your visit the store is etched into my memory. My deepest sympathies and those of my family and friends whom I have told of your lost, are extended to you and your family. I have found that riding gives me time to refect and sort out my life. I hope it has or can do the same for you. Have a wonderful summer and if you have a moment stop by the store, we would love to see you.

All the best and happiness to you.

Peace,

Jessica, I think of Steve and of you every day. As long as I live, he will be remembered with great fondness and tears. America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
