Douglas Miller Obituary
Elizabeth, Rachel and Katie Miller miss their daddy. They miss sitting on Daddy's lap -- all three -- and watching the movie "Ghostbusters." They miss Daddy lying in bed to keep them warm. They miss Daddy hanging them outside of windows by ropes during the family "fire drills," making small baskets under their hips. They wonder who will put the lights on the chimney this year. Their daddy, Douglas C. Miller, 34, was a firefighter in Rescue Company 5 of Staten Island.
He and their mother, Laurie, met when he was 15, she 16. He visited relatives over the summer in Mill Rift, Pa., where Laurie grew up. When he returned home to Long Island, he sent her audio tapes of his voice, telling her he missed her. "We were young, and we were in love," said Laurie. They married seven years later. Now in the bedroom, she hangs a 20-by-15-inch picture of him, in uniform. "I am trying to be strong for the girls," she said.
A local council member has volunteered to climb their three-story house to put the lights on the chimney.

Today I participated in the 911 Memorial Stair Climb in Fayetteville, NC. I had Douglas’s photo pinned to my shirt praying for him and his family. My husband had Martin J. Egan Jr. pinned to his shirt.
It was a humbling event as we walked in our local baseball stadium. The 343 firefighters pictures were on the big screen as we listen to patriotic music, the live voices on the scan and news reports on that day.
This is not a timed race, but a way for firefighters and the community to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live. We are paying tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Our tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY brother, but allows us to symbolically complete their heroic journey to save others. Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters is honored and the world knows that we will never forget.

The 9/11 Memorial has a way in which Facebook users can dedicate their status to a someone who died on 9/11. My status is dedicated to Doug. I've said a prayer for him and his family and friends, and please know he is being thought of today by so many who, although we did not know him, grieve for his loss.

I am remembering all of the victims and families of 911 but a special thought goes to Douglas C. Miller and his family. Right after this tragedy I donated to one of the funds and in turn they sent a brass bracelet with the name of one of the fallen Fire Fighters or Police Officers. My bracelet has Douglas C. Miller engraved on it and I wear this bracelet on each anniversary of 911. I hope that you (family, wife, children) are doing ok and if you can send me an email I'd be honored to hear from you. Today is November 3, 2007. The years have gone by but the memory still remains. I pray that Douglas' family has been able to go on with their lives in a way that he would be proud of them. I know they still hold him in their hearts. I still have my bracelet for Firefighter Miller and wear it proudly.

Doug was a wonderful and caring person. Whenever you needed a hand Doug was always there to lend a hand. It breaks my heart when I'm with his family knowing that he isn't able to grow old with his wife or watch his 3 children grow up. I also have a memorial bracelet with Douglas C Miller's name. After September 11th, I wanted something to memorialize a New York City Firefighter. I chose his name since we share the same last name, approximately the same age, both married with children.
I will forever keep his name in my heart.

As neighbors of the Millers, we were sickened by the news of September 11th and angry when the news of Doug came through. Our hearts and prayers are with Laurie and the girls. I went to grammar school with Doug's sister Pam and have not seen her since we graduated in 1983. My husband is a NYC firefighter also and while going down the list of names soon after 9-11 I saw the name Doug Miller. For some reason, I did think of Pam and remembered she had a brother Doug. Once I saw his picture I knew it was the same Miller family. I waited for details on the funeral arrangements and would have gone to show my respects, but unfortunately it was out of state. If you're reading this Pam, I hope you remember me and accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. One of our fellow alumnus from St. Martin's is also in the same firehouse as my husband.
