Mary Wieman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 5, 2001.
Energy, Loyalty, Parties
Mary L. Wieman was strong and hard-charging, a business executive and mother who more than once caught the red- eye home to New York from California, cooked breakfast for her husband and three children, then shot off to work at the Aon Corporation.

She orchestrated insurance coverage for major American corporations and she was so devoted to detail that early on Sept. 11, as she was preparing to run a meeting on the 105th floor of 2 World Trade Center, she polished the office furniture. "There were no insurmountable problems for her," said her husband, Marc Wieman.

Ms. Wieman, 43, loved dancing and throwing big parties for work and at home, and the loyalty she generated led people to congregate in her office when there was time to catch a breath. She kept trim by working out nearly every morning. When word came to evacuate, she walked down to the 78th floor. Then, inexplicably, she decided to take the elevator, colleagues told her husband.

"That decision was perfectly in character," Mr. Wieman said. "It was just like her to say, 'I'm not taking the stairs.' And that would be it."

I was working in the large Property insurance business where Mary made her name and had a chance to work with Mary. She was a consummate professional, with strong intellect and drive.

While I did not know her personally, as I read this obituary, I could see her strength and compassion in everything she did. God Bless her family.

Hi, Mary,

Can't believe 14 years have gone by. I can still laugh when I remember you looking at a property quote and, in your own unique way, saying "Geez, I mean, really? What are they smoking over there?" I'd start laughing and we'd be there with Gary Marchitello & Dan Dwyer. Fun days, good days, days that I miss. I think of you often and think of the wonderful talent that was taken away. But, I know you rest in Heaven because, really? where else could you be? :) May you rest in peace, my friend. I shall see you again one day.

This past weekend you were in our hearts as we shared memories of you at the 50th Jubilee of Sacred Heart of Mary H.S. in Rolling Meadows, IL. As one of your teachers there, I am proud of your accomplishments and grateful for your inspiration. Many of us remembered that you always wore your SHM class ring and are planning to get ours re-sized to wear again in your honor. I was in the Class of 1967 and will wear mine for you. They say your ring was never recovered from the site. Your family and friends will remember you always. As a consultant I often worked in NYC and could have been with you that sad day, but will always be with you in the spirit of the Heart.

Mary was an absolute delight and an outstanding broker. I worked with Mary for many years on a very large, complex account and Mary had the talent, contacts and drive to play a major role in maintaining the account: the client wanted her sign off on renewals and called me immediately on 9/11 to find out if Mary was OK. i'm retired now; but still communicate with client and Mary always comes up in our conversations.

We all thought the world of her: funny, quick wit, friendly, tenacious, hard worker, complete integrity, loyal, loved her work and liked to socialize with her co-workers. Bermuda business trips became fun trips if Mary was there. Ed Magliaro and Gary Marchitello thought the world of her. And she delighted in keeping me informed of her family and put up with my being a Sox, Bruins,Patriots, Celtics fan. My thoughts are with her family today.

On of the good ones, taken far to early; gone but not forgotten.

I remember the joy in your face as we spoke at the last SHM Class Reunion. You loved to dance, to sing, to ski! Most of all you loved people!
You stood tall with a smile, and would know the right thing to say at the right time to make peace when others got angry or nasty.
I know you will be singing and dancing from above, celebrating all who survived and all who joined you in the world of grace.

I didn't know you Mary, or anyone else who perished on that fateful day. I am just a fellow Long Islander who wants your family and friends to know that there are those of us who will never forget and continue to feel the pain of their losses. Every anniversary I listen to all the names of those lost being read as a way to pay my respect and each year I am more moved than the one before. May God bless you and your loved ones.

Mary, thinking of you today. You were a peacemaker. Dan and I are still best of friends despite the day in Wheeling where we wanted to punch each other's lights out! LOL. I can't even remember what the argument was about; but, I remember what you did:

You were driving the rental car and you just said: "boys, boys, I'm not moving this car until you shake hands and say you're sorry to each other". We did and it makes for a funny memory..one that springs into my mind often.

May you be at peace. Miss you!

Hard to believe it's been 5 years. My favorite image of Mary is when she attended a Christmas party for one of her clients (me and some others). After finishing her cosmopolitan, she stood up and announced that she was bored and was leaving. That was Mary...always telling you what was on her mind. I miss that straightforwardness...it was delightfully refreshing.
